The Pain The Pain

So how is this for a sick cosmic joke. I have to read all sort of upsetting stuff about my great country going to hell in a handbasket under this current corporation--I mean, administration, sorry. I also have to witness Million Dollar Baby continue to win things. Hilary Swank just WON'T go away. I have to do both of these things while in total pain. I threw my back out yesterday.

By my calculations this is the 1,139th time I've been bent over in pain like I was a granny with a walker since I was 16 (the first time I remember my back declaring mutiny) . Yes, this happens to me a lot. But it doesn't normally happen during weeks in which George Bush is throwing parties and Hilary Swank is electing Clint Eastwood to replace Jesus as the holy savior of mankind) Last night watching the SAGs I was in so much pain and so immobile that I caught myself wishing I were as spry as Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman, James Garner, and that 100 year old actor who sent a video message to the SAG ceremony. Oh to be young again like them...

I am in a horrid mood right now (so please forgive if this message annoys) but I will try to cheer up (Lortab -save me!) and think of something else to say rather than describing my distaste for Hilary Swank for the 36th time in as many days. But before I go right this moment while my spine sends hateful messages to my brain I do want to stop and say that I think Swank is really pretty (people keeps saying she's ugly which I don't get) and maybe she should play Wonder Woman because she has that sort of brawny tawny Amazonian beauty going on. Also if she plays a superhero maybe everyone will laugh at her and her career will nosedive? That's how I got rid of Jennifer Garner and Halle Berry! Oh wait they're still working. Damn, I hate my life.

*this message can be blamed on excruciating pain. don't be a hater. wish me get well soons!*

I kind of like the idea of Swank playing Wonder Woman-her career should do a Renaissance of sorts after she robbed Bening, Staunton, or Winslet of their rightful SAG.

I have a question for you Nathaniel-what do you think will become of Sandino Moreno after all of this attention being lavished on her? Will she go the way of Fernanda Montenegro a couple of years back and never be heard from again or what? I'm interested in your opinion.

Also, get well soon!

Fernanda Montenegro was best actress in tribeca film festival last year

aww, get well soon.

And I also like Hilary as a person and think she's really nice and sorta pretty and such but, yeah, it's just annoying that she's gonna win again because as much I liked her performance in M$B it isn't the best in the top 5 let alone for the year (say hello to Ms. Kidman in Dogville). But, whatever.

Man, Halle and Jennifer are annoying.

I'm still predicting Staunton.
I know there's no logic supporting this position, I'm just feeling it.

Oh me too! But she'll probably end up being the Sissy Spacek of this year. Started off gangbusters and then got overtaken by a young chick proving her worth (who will, no doubt, end up making bad comic book movies and ghost stories)

...right!

Get well soon. I prescribe you 1 anti-Swank vitimin, to be taken daily until the end of the month.

I LOVED Boys Don't Cry. People think I'm weird because I totally adored this movie about rape, murder and discrimination, but I still think it was actually quite uplifting and worthy of repeated viewings, one of the very best of 99, right up there with Malkovich and All About My Mother. Swank swept the critics that year and did indeed deserve her win that time (Nathaniel would surely say a case could be made for Winslet in Holy Smoke, since she's always terrific, but she wasn't nommed, so of the nominees, I think Swank deserved it hands down). And the whole cast and the writing and directing were amazing. Particularly Chloe Sevigny, who like Swank has yet to really amaze since then, and Peter Saarsgard (the first I remember seeing of him... and of course he's just gotten bigger and better since then). Now I'm as against Swank winning again as anyone else, but please don't begrudge her Boys Don't Cry. That was a totally justified oscar win. Which I think puts her a notch above, say, Theron and Berry as far as quality acting goes. She's just not very versatile.
But I do think she'll win again this year. I really can't see Staunton beating her.

You know what? I was thrilled she won in 1999, I love the performance and I love the film. She deserved it, I absolutely agree.

She's very good in Million Dollar Baby too. My problem with the win (and subsequently my problem with her) is that I can think of 5 better leading female performances than hers from 2004. And I think general goodwill for (a) the movie and (b) the character are lending her performance greater authority than it truly deserves this time.
