Late Night SAG

So, I went to a Broadway show (Sunday in the Park with George) tonight instead of seeing SAG live --I haven't been feeling awards season this year what with all the strike business. So I'm still watching it now on rerun when I should be sleeping. My only takeaways so far: Ruby Dee's insane Carol Channingesque glasses, a reminder that I really need to watch Mad Men, another fix of my Krak addiction (Jane Krakowski: "I'm Johnny Depp and I'm an actor"), Mickey Rooney annoyingly making a presenting job into a self-tribute (Dude! It was Charles Durning's night, not yours), Cate Blanchett losing her fashion sense for once, Viggo Mortensen's maroon vest, why is the camera not showing Michelle Pfeiffer (I know she's there! Oh wait, there she is. mmmm), Tilda's cute embarrassment watching her own Michael Clayton clip.

the winners
Ensemble No Country For Old Men
Actor
Daniel Day-Lewis -There Will Be Blood
Actress
Julie Christie -Away From Her
Supporting Actor
Javier Bardem -No Country For Old Men
Supporting Actress Ruby Dee American Gangster (and I really wish I'd printed up predictions because I decided a few days ago that she was going to win the Oscar this year, too)

how about daniel day-lewis proving once and for all that he is by far the nicest person ever to even get within ten miles of hollywood by dedicating his award to heath ledger? it's amazing that someone that genuine and lovely can play a character like daniel plainview, which is all the more reason why he BETTER get the oscar.

Daniel Day-Lewis is just something else.

His speech had me all teary-eyed (just like Blanchett).

What was that with Julie Christie saying Lions Gate’s president “forced” her on stage?

Holy shit!

Did you guys see the new paparazzi pics of Jake Gyllenhaal? He looks almost as bad as Naomi Watts in “21 Grams”.

Bless his heart…

Ruby Dee = Amy Ryan = Cate
I don't think so! If they had to be sentimental, Hal Holbrook should have been the one to win!

Praising Heath Ledger so soon ( I think he was an excellent actor ), but the jury isn't in on his demise yet, and I'm not too sure he was the role model for aspiring actors.

Christie is notorious for being out of the lime light, but the comment she made was really uncalled for.

It seems the distictions are deservedly earned.

Eric:

Yikes. And you know Jake’s already such a sensitive guy.

Ialso heard Ryan Gosling wore a black ribbon for Heath at the SAGS.

On a lighter note, so happy for "No Country" and Ruby Dee!

Tilda Swinton was robbed- but loved her hair
Javier Bardem (justly) wins again.
"The Sopranos" got their due.
Tom Cruise should not have been a presenter.

Oh, and Daniel Day-Lewis is the man: Check out the speech;

How was Sunday in the Park With George?? A friend just got me tickets to see it for my birthday.

Thank you so much for printing a full list of film winners; the BBC News managed to skip over the information that Ruby Dee had won. She's not European, you know.

Sorry Nate but in the "losing your fashion sense award" Joile's brown tent had to be the winner - and after all - Cate is 7 months preggers - I loved Viggo - the red vest scarf etc and Daniel Day lewis won the oscar for sure with that speech -

Yes -- you REALLY need to be watching Mad Men! But you already said that :)

Daniel Day-Lewis at the same table as Brad and Angelina?!

I wonder if the Academy will listen to Julie's "Hey Academy: Sarah Polley!" endorsement?

Tilda is a real chameleon. She will never look natural in any hair color ever again.

Queen Latifah MUST be excellent, outstanding, superb in her tv movie. After all, the Guild had the chance to award Ellen Burnstyn, Vanessa Redgrave or Gena Rowlands and they went for Latifah. Weird.

Marcelo - Brazil.

Where were some of those actors who weren't there? I finally have the chance to watch Queen Latifah nab a trophy, and she doesn't even show up?

Also, and I also agree have been saying the same thing on Ruby Dee for a while. I think tonight's four are the ones picking up the Oscars. I personally think that, when people look back therefore on this class, they're probably going to be thinking that this was an Oscar of legendary actors, cuz three are already there and the fourth is on his way.

anonymous --which statement do you think was uncalled for (re: julie christie)?

I saw the London production of Sunday in the Park. I thought Jenna Russell gave one of the finest performances I have seen on stage. I liked the musical before I saw the Menier's take, but I completely fell in love with it after.

Go Ruby Dee! Hope she wins the Oscar too.

Daniel Day Lewis is so wonderful and classy. I had tears in my eyes.

Julie Christie is wonderful too. I'm glad that the BSA race is still open, it makes at least one acting race exciting.

NATHANIEL R said...

gayasxmas we got the London leads here in NYC and Jena Russell was indeed fab in the role of Dot/Marie... wow.

I think the musical has second act problems but there is just NO beating "sunday" --such a moving number. One of the best Sondheim ever wrote I think (which is saying a lot)

It's great to see DDL complete his grand slam with the SAG which has eluded him the past years.

Anonymous said...

Oops. Just realised he won for "Gangs of New York" as well.

I am assuming the offensive Julie Christie line was "....and if I forgot to thank someone, I am still in character"....didn't think it was amusing, however, it bother me - legendary superstah. i was excited to see her there. also gang, didn't mickey rooney say his category was a tie??? He announced "Miss" Latifah....then that was it. I loved the "Miss," he probably thinks her first name is queen. he actually seemed pretty with-it...however, did not have to see the fabulous Jan Rooney; burt reynolds did not look as horrible as he usually does & seemed pretty heartfelt; it's great charles durning got a prize; not any /enough pfeifer; brangelina sure are pretty.

If Daniel Day-Lewis hadn't already won the Oscar then I'm sure that speech just did it for him.

I loved Julie Christie. I haven't seen "Away from Her" yet (definitively it is in my must-see list) but I found her extremely beautiful and hot yesterday at SAG Awards' ceremony. She's incredibly radiant and is one of the sexiest ladies alive alongside Helen Mirren and Charlotte Rampling...

By the way,
What's your opinion (Nathaniel) about Ruby Dee's victory?

p.s. I'm a huge fan of TV's "30 ROCK" so I made a small party (kidding) in my living room when Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey won their respective awards.

NATHANIEL R said...

I'm fine with the Ruby Dee win.

there's a reason why those sentimental victories are sometimes necessary. And since I know that Tilda couldn't win I'm fine with it (I preferred Blanchett's work to Dee's but Blanchett hardly needs more trophies)

Mickey Rooney made Queen Latifah's moment all about him. Shameless and self-aggrandizing. It would have been nice for her to actually have been there for that peer recognition, b/c she was excellent in "Life Support" and earned the award.

Marion Cotillard should have won lead actress, but at least she was there and got to present something big like supporting actor. Maybe people will wise up about her next year with "Nine".

The sendoff to "The Sopranos" was great, and even though I don't think Tina Fey should be receiving any kind of acting awards, it was a nice moment for "30 Rock" all the same.

Ruby Dee winning rocked. I don't care who wants to give her shit about it. She was great in her limited screentime, and in a year like this, if she goes all the way to Oscar, I'll gladly cheer her on.

Daniel Day-Lewis. OMG, what a speech. So classy and amazing. Dedicating his award to Heath Ledger was one of the most heartfelt moments I've ever seen on an awards show, and seeing Heath/Ennis's picture during the death montage tore me up inside. :(

Actually, Luigi just reminded me - Helen Mirren won last year and now, hopefully, Julie Christie will win this year. Isn't that wild? The silver foxes are taking over. And just think, Meryl Streep would win next year too!

gabrieloak said...

Yeah, enough with the anorexic skinny debutantes, let's keep giving awards to sexy older silver foxes. I agree, next year may be Streep's year again. Though she may have competition from the divine Winslet.

Anonymous said...

Marion Cotillard isn't anorexic or a "skinny debutante" or whatever the hell other insult thrown at her. She's a stunning and talented actress that fully deserves to win the Oscar for "La Vie en Rose".

Overall SAG pics look like a preview of Oscar awards. Still, I'm hoping that Atonement picks up at least best adopted screenplay. The book, which I read after seeing the flick, is great, but in some ways the film is even better, more focused. Am I the only one ginvin' Atonement some love?

Anonymous said...

Quite disappointed about the Ruby Dee win. The sentimentalitis gets annoying. Hope it won't be repeated at the Oscars, but that's wishful thinking; one can't expect much from a bunch that keeps fucking it up year after year.

As much as I love the Silver Foxes (I really Hope Christie goes on to win, it would be so well deserved), I hope to god that that streak will end. Kate Winslet MUST win next year, and if not her then PLEASE give it to JULIANNE!

here's what they could do next year streep best actress for doubt there is no point discussing whether she will be good in it becuase i have never ever seen one bad perf by her then best s/actress to winslet for the reader,as for dee that last scene i have had on repeat the slap seems work sissy, faye and cher used it to great effect in the past,"she will eave you" a great line reading,i just have a problem with her winning for 4 minutes if she had some more scenes or more meat to her character but over swinton, ronan and blanchett no no no i think amy ryan is a critical darling and thats all she now will now win,i think supp actress really could be a shocker, christie is a lock now unless juno sweeps.

Anonymous said...

i have a feeling 1 of these will not tranfer to oscar and i think it maybe christie!!!

John T said...

Yeah, the fact that this is Ruby Dee's first Oscar nomination is a bit atrocious. I'm starting to root for her, and I'm guessing a lot of the Academy is too.

John T said...

Also, am I the only person who didn't know that Johnny Grant had died?

Anonymous said...

NAt,
The comment from Christie about having been forced onto the stage by Lionsgate .. seems a little ungrateful to me...she's had so much support this year from everyone.

She may be shy, but this is show business.

Anonymous said...

Mr Ripley, I can accept that comprimise!

Anonymous said...

I'm thrilled with Dee's win. She doesn't even make my top 5, but it was a beautiful performance with so little time. Even her four second clip was fierce. I've already resigned myself to the fact that Swinton and Holbrook (my choices) won't win. Bardem is a very worthy choice.

Day-Lewis is the best performance of the year, so no problem there. While I think Amy Adams should have been nominated (and won), Christie was stunning and I'll cheer her on.

Overall, very happy with the winners last night.

Anonymous said...

Christie was fine, she asn't rude at all! I didn't get that impression!!!

Casey Affleck on the other hand...chewing and frowning all night...

Anonymous said...

This night was very B-list. Lots of TV actors but how can an awards show have the slightest amount of credibility when Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, Charlize Theron and Uma Thurman are not there ?

Anonymous said...

i like that christie has a bit of an attitude. after a while, i think i'd be like "fuck it!" too. also, in the after-interview, she admitted that the sort of sickly role she portrayed was the type that won kudos. most performers wouldn't be so honest!

adam k. said...

Haha Julie Christie is awesome. I love that she comes across as a bit out of it when really you know she's just existing on this higher plane somewhere and can't be bothered with terrestrial concerns.

NATHANIEL R said...

arlov very funny. it was less glam than it should have been yes.

bryan i also love 'ladies with an attitude' but sometimes Oscar voters don't (cue: annette bening) so, I worry...
