7 Word Movie Reviews: Despicable Me, Joan Rivers

Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work
Equally entertaining and incisive. Lacked something... what?
B+

Despicable Me
Annoying music. Lame villain. But often hilarious.

  1. I thought the humour in the trailer of Despicable Me seemed pretty weak. Not really looking forward that movie.

  2. I thought so too (about the commericals and trailers) but i ended up laughing a lot.

  3. I loved it in a very silly way. It doesn't have the depth of ts3 but it did provide more instantly gratifying laughs. So fluffy!!

Oh and the villain(s) are supposed to be lame. It gives the whole movie a roadrunner and coyote type of feel.

  4. well i didn't mean lame like in not powerful. i just thought Vector was a dull antagonist. not that funny.

    loved Gru though.

  5. Loved "Joan Rivers." I would say perhaps it's the best non-artistic doc this year (i.e. best one that doesn't play with the form).

"Exit Through the Gift Shop" is the best doc of the year period.

I haven't seen "Despicable Me" but I love the P.S. line and I have seen the clip that it is from.

  6. Definitely rooting for the Joan Rivers doc at the Oscars...though they can get weird with that category (ie Capitalism: A Love Story, but that was probably just to screw with Michael Moore).

No. It's just that Michael Moore and his last Oscar speech.

Trust me. History will be kinder.

  13. Haven't seen Joan Rivers.

Despicable Me-Gru was cool (his voice was awesome), the Minions are literally designed to be marketed but still very cute, the kids were a little cute but got dull, Vector was incredibly annoying. The music was bearable.

  14. Oh, and I saw Predators-liked it. Fairly good sequel.

Of the 9 main characters: 6 were forgettable. Brody's character was a bit dull, but he played it well. Some unknown actor played the Yakuza guy. His character was a BAMF, his acting was good enough to make me root for him to survive. Lawrence Fishburn was annoying.

  15. Andrew ... what's a BAMF? To me that means the noise that Nightcrawler makes when he teleports in the X-Men comics.

  16. Nathaniel: I believe BAMF means "Bad-Ass Motherfucker." But I'm no scholar on the issue.

So you are going to re-fix your animated feature predictions. I actually saw something in the trailers, especially when it's competition is Will Ferrell doing that requisite, "Pixar and upstart studios won't take me, but I know DreamWorks will" move in regards to animation. (See also: Ben Stiller, David Schwimmer, Wanda Sykes (a boon for Over the Hedge), Reese Witherspoon (still, it's the first step in what looks like a serious career re-hab, what with only her dull as dish-water supporting turn in Walk the Line being her only decent/respectable role since American Psycho or Election. See Also: A James L. Brooks, a mostly well cast Water for Elephants (save R. Patts) and an actual Pixar.)

  18. Volvagia -- She won the Oscar for Walk the Line. Hardly a misstep in her career.

I have problems with the Walk the Line performance. Huge, implacable and unretractable problems. Leaf.. I mean Joaquin Phoenix, was hypnotic, charismatic and everything you could want in this sort of film. Reese Witherspoon? I'm sorry, but I feel that her parody (Jenna Fisher/Angela Correa) has more spark and life. It's one of those wins that seems way too premature, at the wrong time for the wrong role. (She has genuine energy and life in Election, but 2001-2004 and 06-08 are career black hole periods with 05 as, frankly, a wash. Honestly, it looks like she's back now, and it's always amazing when a great performer can say that "things are lookin' up.")

  20. The plot of Despicable Me has enough twists and turns to keep things interesting, and the antics of the minions provide a nice side of fun to the proceedings. Also, their reaching contest during the credits is a fun use of 3-D that had the kids in the theater reaching for the screen.

In regards to Bush: Yes, they aren't as cruel as they used to be. To his administration? I doubt it. The theory du jour is that Cheney was running things.

  23. I was really surprised I liked this movie, animation is really not my genre, but laughed most of the way through it
