At any rate, Dr. Plonk does sound delightfully demented.

Boyd: This fest -- hell, this year in general -- seems to be a rich one for French cinema. I've already seen the Rivette, the Hou and the Rohmer (which I didn't like, but I digress), and I've got Chabrol and Breillat coming up.

Nathaniel: Maddin, generally, is best in small doses -- his fever pitch can get wearying. It's probably significant that my favorite film of his, Cowards Bend the Knee, runs only a touch over an hour.Steve C.https://www.blogger.com/profile/01958138092537744506noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8256060.post-12785470844801744152007-09-10T00:35:00.000-04:002007-09-10T00:35:00.000-04:00If you have a thing for silent films you should se...If you have a thing for silent films you should seek out Dr Plonk, a new Aussie film by Rolf de Heer (Ten Canoes), which is - quite literally - a black and white silent comedy made using a traditional hand-cranked camera and old film stock.Glenn Dunkshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05424659636310160482noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8256060.post-63228429844951356912007-09-09T19:23:00.000-04:002007-09-09T19:23:00.000-04:00I both loved Ne touchez pas la hache (which I saw ...I both loved Ne touchez pas la hache (which I saw in Berlin) and Le voyage du ballon rouge (which I saw in Cannes).

The former is one of the most spine-chilling films of the year, even though technically it isn't a thriller, while the latter is about as close to a perfect performance a Binoche is ever going to give.. and she's got quite a few great ones on her name already.

What is so nice about both films is that they underline the idea that French cinema isn't content to simply rest on its laurels... thank God!Boydhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08911661238937757140noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8256060.post-79255469613287505822007-09-09T18:31:00.000-04:002007-09-09T18:31:00.000-04:00i just don't know what to do with Maddin. On the o...i just don't know what to do with Maddin. On the one hand he absolutely fascinates me but on the other I get so frustrated... I haven't seen all of his films but every time I've screened a feature I've felt like it would've been better as a short.NATHANIEL Rhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11597109147678235399noreply@blogger.com
