Since they went with Whoopi – a character actress with a showy role in a movie that made money – same situation with Bates – a non-Hollywood type with a showy role in a movie that made money. <br /><br />It fact all the acting winners that year were character actors. <br /><br />I hate that people want to a take Bates’ Oscar away – had a man given that same performance they’d never be a debate – somehow actresses are always controversial.
