Anne Announcing Oscars

Anne Hathaway has been tapped to announced the nominations for this year's Academy Awards on the morning of Tuesday, February 2nd. One year after being named a nominee and starring in Bride Wars. What names will she be reading out I wonder? Since they've gotten a female to do the co-presenting honours, Anne will be announcing Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor. The former seems locked solid (Bridges, Clooney, Firth, Freeman, Renner) although the latter could throw up a surprise or two. Will Hathaway announce "Stanley Tucci" before pausing for a couple of seconds and following it with "in Julie & Julia"? Will she be able to lay claim to being the first person to ever read Christopher Plummer's name out as an Oscar nominee? We shall see next week (NEXT WEEK!)

I also wonder if Anne gets the honour of announcing all ten of the Best Picture nominees or if she and Academy President Tom Sherak will split the duties. And no matter how they do it, what surprises will we see sprout out of this new-fangled system? I am both excited and bored to tears by the whole process, aren't you?

"Ugh, Invictus? REALLY?"

You tell 'em, Anne!

Her last year's enthusiasm at BFCA doesn't necessarily prove that she has a good taste, so "Invictus" comment doesn't fit. I still can remember her calling Dev Patel's performance "the best".

  2. BAHAHAHAHAHAH. Love the caption.

I'm thinking some surprises definietly in Pic, Actress, Song and One Supporting Catagorey. If Marion gets snubbed...well...youll never hear the end of it

  3. Does anyone know if there's a place to watch the nominations announcement online? This will be the first year I don't have access to a TV on the big morning?

  4. If Marion is still being campaigned as lead, then she has no chance getting in.
I'd love hearing "Stanley Tucci in Julie & Julia".

"Will she be able to lay claim to being the first person to ever read Christopher Plummer's name out as an Oscar nominee?"

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Plummer.

By the way, I guess I'm the only one here who loved Invictus.

I hope Bullock gets snubbed. She was awful in the BS.

Yay Anne! Glad they picked her to do this. Now nominations day feels all real and close to happening!

  9. I'm hoping that Anne Hathaway will be calling out Christopher Plummer's name but the lack of critical fire for "The Last Station" makes me doubt.

"Will she be able to lay claim to being the first person to ever read Christopher Plummer's name out as an Oscar nominee?"

That would be an honor, but an honor that will be somewhat bittersweet when she will also be the first person to read Sandra Bullocks name out as an Oscar nominee...

I wouldn't be surprised at all if Tucci gets in for Julie and Julia. If you ask me, its a simple matter of alphabetizing. In the past, people expected Leonardo DiCaprio for The Departed and Kate Winslet for Revolutionary Road...only to find out they were right about the actors, wrong about the movies. Blood Diamand and The Reader (assuming the traditional trend to overlook "The") come before The Departed and Revolutionary Road...if names/movies are listed alphabetically, then people see the name they want to vote for, mark it, and move on (without double checking if it's the right movie). Alas, Stanley Tucci for Julie and Julia (instead of The Lovely Bones). Just some conjecture on my part.

  14. Can you update YOUR Oscar picks? Please?

    My final picks until nominations:
    BEST PICTURE/DIRECTOR:
1-2. Hurt Locker or Avatar (note: Bigelow has a better chance in Director, but they're dead even in Pic)
    3. Precious
    4. Up in the Air (losing steam, plus it's funny and too current)
    5. Inglourious Basterds
    6. An Education
    7. Invictus
    8. Up
    9. A Serious Man
    10. I have no idea.
    Alternates: Lots-see Slot 10.

    BEST ACTOR:
    1. Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart)
    2. George Clooney (Up in the Air)
    3. Morgan Freeman (Invictus)
    4. Colin Firth (Single Man)
    5. Jeremy Renner (Hurt Locker)
Alternates: Viggo Mortensen in The Road

    BEST ACTRESS:
    1. Meryl Streep in Julie and Julia
2-3. Carey Mulligan in An Education and Sandra Bullock (ugh) in Blind Side
    4. Gabourey Sibide in Precious
    5. Helen Mirren in Last Station
Alternates: Emily Blunt in Young Victoria, Marion Cotillard in Nine

    BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR:
    1. Christoph Waltz in Basterds
    2. Woody Harrelson in Messenger
    3. Stanley Tucci for Lovely Bones (no Julie/Julia, sorry)
    4. Matt Damon in Invictus
    5. Plummer in Last Station
Alternates: Alfred Molina in An Education, Anthony Mackie in Hurt Locker, Christian McKay in Me and Orson Welles

    BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS:
    1. Mo'nique in Precious
    2. Anna Kendrick in Up in the Air
    3. Vera Farmiga in Up in the Air
    4. Melanie Laurent in Basterds (ACADEMY, DON'T PUT HER IN THE LEAD CATEGORY!)
    5. Julianne Moore in Single Man
Alternates: Cotillard if her campaign doesn't work out even though I think it will, Cruz in Nine, Diane Kruger in Basterds, Weaver in Avatar

    BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY:
    1. Precious
    2. Up in the Air
    3. An Education
    4. Invictus
    5. Fantastic Mr. Fox
    Alternate: Bright Star

    BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY:
    1. Hurt Locker
    2. Avatar
    3. Inglourious Basterds
    4. Serious Man
    5. (500) Days of Summer

    ANIMATED FILM:
    1. Up
    2. Fantastic Mr. Fox.
    3. Coraline
    4. Princess and Frog
    5. Either Ponyo or Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs-Ponyo's better, but it is getting snub after snub.

    DOCUMENTARY:
    1. The Cove
2-5. Who cares, they're going to lose now that Capitalism: A Love Story is ineligible.

    FOREIGN:
    1. White Ribbon (Germany)
    2. A Prophet (France)
    3. Samson and Delilah (Australia)
    4. Secret of her eyes (Argentina)
    5. Not sure here since About Elly is gone, I'll take a BIG risk and say Peru's Milk of Sorrow

This is who WILL, not SHOULD, win. Though it's pretty similar in Director, Actor, S. Actor, S. Actress, both Screenplays, to an extent Animated (tie between Up/Fox/Coral/Ponyo), Documentary, and Foreign.

Hmmm...I'll agree with 9/11 of the major award winners unless there's a shocker. 81%. Not bad!

  15. How great would it be if the Actress lineup turned out like this :

    Cornish - Bright Star
    Mirren - The Last Station
    Mulligan - An Education
    Sidibe - Precious
    Swinton - Julia

Now THAT would make my day.

  16. As long as she can regain composure and not go mental like Salma Hayek then I'm looking forward to seeing her on the big morning.

    ReplyDelete
  17. i can still see NINE getting a best pic nod despite all the bad box office, critics reviews, precursors and guild shut outs. maybe there's still life to it.

  18. Salma Hayek going mental for Penélope was one of the funniest things I've ever seen on the nominations announcement.
I wouldn't hold a grudge on Annie if she does a happy dance or something else after Meryl's name.

I so agree with your Best Actress nominees, but I have to believe there will be the name Sandra Bullock in there messing up the whole awards dignity.

    Nathaniel:

You seriously need to update your predictions. Nine is OUT. I know you're a big Nicole Kidman fan but it's time to admit that its Best Picture chances are done, kaput. It'll get a few tech nominations and that's it. Maybe Cruz for supporting actress.

  23. I have seen the light, and her name is Julia, and she is good. If more actors were willing to stretch like Tilda Swinton, cinema would be a more consistently enjoyable place. I know it's unrealistic to expect an out of nowhere surprise nomination for her in Leading Actress. Even surprises like Laura Linney in The Savages had something going for them with awards at some point in the season. I'm officially going to get my hopes up for Swinton (again, she deserved the supporting nod for TCCoBB) so I can rain fire and brimstone upon the Internet when she's snubbed.

I mean, I've backed some crazy horses in recent years. I've given my own award to scream queens, children, even women who've basically had to smile pretty and cry on cue. But this one, this makes sense. Tilda Swinton glams up to deglam, plays an alchie & compulsive liar, and goes through the full gammot of emotions in this performance. WTF? Where is the love? No really. I understand the pain now. I'm retroactively angry at the critics' snubbing.

I'm afraid of what's going to happen when I see Bright Star if this is how I react to a gritty, ambitious, but ultimately flawed film.

i so DO NOT want to hear Sandra Bullock's name announced next Tuesday morning. on the other hand, i would be so happy to hear the names of Julianne Moore and Anthony Mackie announced.

  25. Nathaniel didn't write this entry, I did. Nathaniel is in Sundance, but I'm sure he'll be doing final predictions before the announcement.

Meanwhile, Salma Heyak's reading of "Water" is one of my defining Oscar memories. HILARIOUS. She might as well have just said "NOT Volver."

  26. After seeing The Last Station, I could see Plummer being replaced by another actor, hopefully Christian McKay.
I found Plummer's performance good but not memorable.
