Anne Announcing Oscars

Anne Hathaway has been tapped to announced the nominations for this year's Academy Awards on the morning of Tuesday, February 2nd. One year after being named a nominee and starring in Bride Wars. What names will she be reading out I wonder? Since they've gotten a female to do the co-presenting honours, Anne will be announcing Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor. The former seems locked solid (Bridges, Clooney, Firth, Freeman, Renner) although the latter could throw up a surprise or two. Will Hathaway announce "Stanley Tucci" before pausing for a couple of seconds and following it with "in Julie & Julia"? Will she be able to lay claim to being the first person to ever read Christopher Plummer's name out as an Oscar nominee? We shall see next week (NEXT WEEK!)

I also wonder if Anne gets the honour of announcing all ten of the Best Picture nominees or if she and Academy President Tom Sherak will split the duties. And no matter how they do it, what surprises will we see sprout out of this new-fangled system? I am both excited and bored to tears by the whole process, aren't you?

    Her last year's enthusiasm at BFCA doesn't necessarily prove that she has a good taste, so "Invictus" comment doesn't fit. I still can remember her calling Dev Patel's performance "the best".

    That would be an honor, but an honor that will be somewhat bittersweet when she will also be the first person to read Sandra Bullocks name out as an Oscar nominee...

    I wouldn't be surprised at all if Tucci gets in for Julie and Julia. If you ask me, its a simple matter of alphabetizing. In the past, people expected Leonardo DiCaprio for The Departed and Kate Winslet for Revolutionary Road...only to find out they were right about the actors, wrong about the movies. Blood Diamand and The Reader (assuming the traditional trend to overlook "The") come before The Departed and Revolutionary Road...if names/movies are listed alphabetically, then people see the name they want to vote for, mark it, and move on (without double checking if it's the right movie). Alas, Stanley Tucci for Julie and Julia (instead of The Lovely Bones). Just some conjecture on my part.

    Salma Hayek going mental for Penélope was one of the funniest things I've ever seen on the nominations announcement.
    I wouldn't hold a grudge on Annie if she does a happy dance or something else after Meryl's name.

    You seriously need to update your predictions. Nine is OUT. I know you're a big Nicole Kidman fan but it's time to admit that its Best Picture chances are done, kaput. It'll get a few tech nominations and that's it. Maybe Cruz for supporting actress.

    I have seen the light, and her name is Julia, and she is good. If more actors were willing to stretch like Tilda Swinton, cinema would be a more consistently enjoyable place. I know it's unrealistic to expect an out of nowhere surprise nomination for her in Leading Actress. Even surprises like Laura Linney in The Savages had something going for them with awards at some point in the season. I'm officially going to get my hopes up for Swinton (again, she deserved the supporting nod for TCCoBB) so I can rain fire and brimstone upon the Internet when she's snubbed.

    I mean, I've backed some crazy horses in recent years. I've given my own award to scream queens, children, even women who've basically had to smile pretty and cry on cue. But this one, this makes sense. Tilda Swinton glams up to deglam, plays an alchie & compulsive liar, and goes through the full gammot of emotions in this performance. WTF? Where is the love? No really. I understand the pain now. I'm retroactively angry at the critics' snubbing.

    I'm afraid of what's going to happen when I see Bright Star if this is how I react to a gritty, ambitious, but ultimately flawed film.

    Meanwhile, Salma Heyak's reading of "Water" is one of my defining Oscar memories. HILARIOUS. She might as well have just said "NOT Volver."
