Monty the Film Critic

Despite being named for a movie star, my furry son rarely pays any heed to movies. The only thing he enjoys about DVDs is the reflected light they throw on the walls.

But this morning his paws sifted through a stack of Fox Searchlight screeners and he was suddenly all opinionated. He immediately claimed Danny Boyle's 127 Hours for his own. Moments later -- my god how I wish I had been filming -- he pulled that flick closer, then shoved Hilary Swank's Conviction right off the couch!

I am not making this up.

Later he used Never Let Me Go as a mattress which is as good a use as any for the movie.

  1. Despite the overwhelming cuteness of the second pic, he seems like he's dreaming of you letting him go and he's trying to reach out to you.

"Never let me go dad!" :p

Andrew R -- that's what cats specialize in to prevent being tossed to the curb when they're hateful.

  9. Awww Monty's adorable! And has terrific tastes in movies ;D

My cats don't like movies. They distract me from them, so they like to get in front of the TV/laptop whenever I watch something. But I love them all the same :D

What a lovely little chat. Is he all or part Russian Blue?

  11. sheila -- he's a shelter kitty so i don't know the provenance. but seems to be russian blue. definitely has a certain Soviet gloom about him.

although, true story, my best friend's cat IS actually from Russia when he served in the peace corps and is much friendlier and happier.

Nathenial I have two questions how do you get these screeners and did you see for colored girls and what did you think of just based on the performances?

  13. monkey -- i'm a member of the BFCA (so we get screeners. we vote next week). i haven't yet seen FOR COLORED GIRLS :(

  16. This reminds me of my dog Maverick. He would watch films with me and genuinely react to what was happening on screen. I'll never forget when he put his head between his paws while watching The Sword and the Stone when Merlin screamed "Fly me to Bermuda!" and abandoned the young Arthur; he didn't perk up again until the finale at just the right moment to show he was paying attention.

  17. What shelter did you get him from? I think Monty and my cat could be brothers:

  18. Step -- your cats fur looks much softer. I got him from a shelter in the Bronx. He was a little crack baby kitten with bad eyes and obviously not weaned properly from mom... but he got healthy once i took him home. But he's old now (12). hope i get some more years with him.

  24. I second Glenn about the Best Supporting Actor trophy... or if there's a Best Looking Actor award, Monty should win hands down. Sooo adorable, fun post Nathaniel!

  25. Monty is a great name for a cat and for a film critic. Love the photos.

My cat Jazzy sat on my lap to watch most of Season 2 of Trueblood.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Mitzi -- mine won't sit on lap for more than 20 minutes and even that is rare. So Monty is more likely to sit and watch a viral video. short attention span!
