Not to say that Streep won't garner another Oscar, but it may be in supporting.

In her favor, Oscar acting awards are won not just for the performance, but as a mix of good acting, popularity, overall career achievement, consulation for an overlooked performance, and what have you. We all know that the truly best perfomance isn't necessarily rewarded (if it was, Tilda Swinton would have won this year). That's why Sandra Bullock won this year -- and she wasn't even nominated by any critics' awards (except for D.C). So Streep certainly has a good shot at picking up another Oscar trophy with all of the goodwill she has in her favor.Craighttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05012509745473551623noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8256060.post-77579388188911005312010-03-20T14:24:00.170-04:002010-03-20T14:24:00.170-04:00Nathaniel, that's the worst possible scenario!...Nathaniel, that's the worst possible scenario! That is, attending events, smiling, politely answering the same questions, being gracious about the other nominees. So, to me she played the game, and rightfully so.

One that truly didn't play the game this year was Melanie Laurent. No idea if it was a deliberate decission or if she was just busy working, but she was invisible.

And I'd be ok with Meryl doing a hard campaign attending all TV shows, being on magazine covers, appearing humble, etc. If someone has earned the right to campaing hard for an Oscar it's her. But that's not going to happen, I don't think it's in her.

I agree with you, she's taken for granted not only in her performances, but they also assume she'll be gracious about losing again. That's why I think she should stop being gracious about it and send them a message by refusing to take part on it. But again, I don't think she'll change her persona to win an Oscar, if she's gracious about it, she just is and will continue to be so.Iggynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8256060.post-20837895120523668852010-03-20T11:01:57.870-04:002010-03-20T11:01:57.870-04:00Liz - I respect your opinion it, the film just str...Liz - I respect your opinion it, the film just struck me in the opposite way. I knew that tying Hepburn would be unlikely (Hepburn didn't have to do too much to win 4) and that's one of the reason the Sandra-Of-The-Moment thing bothered me so much. It was such a perfect time to honor Meryl because the performance was funny, good, and in a hit film and her competition was either weak, uneccessary or GREAT (but the two great ones both could have been damaged by a win -- those early career resentment trophies).

and now if they do ever deign to honor Streep with a third (which I'm doubting) it sseems to me like it will be at the expense of someone whose never won but has deserved to since tehre are so many of those players. And none of them were in the race this year.

I love Meryl with all my heart but it's going to be wee bit sad for me if/when she has to beat Julianne Moore Michelle Pfeiffer Annette Bening Laura Linney Joan Allen or whomever from finally picking up a trophy on their last shot as well, you know?

David -- i assume it'll happen eventually. these things are cyclical and when Kidman does have something of a comeback the media will act like they were rooting for her all along. it's the nature of hte beast.NATHANIEL Rhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11597109147678235399noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8256060.post-78548210320374785442010-03-20T10:31:20.511-04:002010-03-20T10:31:20.511-04:00re: Meryl's third

And she has lost to two completely different type of actresses. Kate Winslet in, for many people, one of her lesser performances, but seen as overdue. And to Sandra Bullock in her so-called career best, but still not the best of the nominated ones (I think I've not seen anyone stating she was the best, at least). So what kind of competition should she have to win an Oscar? It doen's matter, she won't win.

The only possibility would be if she wasn't the frontrunner the entire year. That is, if she was a surprising nominee at the end of the year (à la Bullock), but that's impossible being La Streep. She gets buzz for anything (she even got some timid buzz for Mamma Mia! before the movie opened).

So, either she gets to play a meaty role in a big big movie with a prestigious director with a lot of Oscar potential (i.e. Aviator like) or her third will be in the supporting category, when she gets really old (in ten or fifteen years or so) in one of those scene stealer short parts.

But the way I see it now, she'll continue to have regular work for about 5 years more, and then she'll start playing supporting parts occasionally. One of the (many) things that baffled me from this last Oscar season was the people repeating that Streep would have many other opportunities. When? She's 60. How many good parts are there for actresses that age, even for La Streep?

If I were her, I'd stop playing this endless and fruitless game that only makes her to be the nominee most cited in acceptance speeches and Oscar ceremonies. Mo'nique said "it can be about the performance and not the politics", right? So why not for Streep? Maybe if she stops playing the game, they'll value her more than if she's always the available good sport.

(see? I can't shut up) :)Iggynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8256060.post-43140360818109810772010-03-20T07:30:44.942-04:002010-03-20T07:30:44.942-04:00On my mind...
