Anyone know how she weaseled out of her Calvin Klein contract for Oscar night? On all the talk shows she kept talking about how she didn't have to worry about her Oscar dress because she was under contract to Klein... and than she shows up in another designer? What gives?
Anyone know? I hope it's juicy as I'd like more ammunition for my imaginery feud with Ms. Swank.

Jesus, Nathanial. You're obsessed with trashing this woman. You look QUITE pathetic. She won... GET OVER IT!
i think anonymous people look even more pathetic than the obsessed ones.
I happen to agree with anonymous. She broke fashion deal? That is completely irrelevant to the awards themselves, and I believe Nathaniel only posted it because he's still fuming over the Academy's Swank fever. Enough is enough, let's move on to 2006, please?
Nathaniel, go here:

I think you have much to learn with Lelek's text. I mean, come on, you're confused: great actors are not necessarily people we like. I hate la Benning when she's not in a movie, but I think she's a fine actress (although she's terrible in American Beauty).
Hilary Swank deserved her first Oscar, and this second one was, well, a little too much, but that's the Oscar... Hey, Charlie Kaufman winning an Oscar is a VERY BAD thing for me, since I think the screenplay is the worst part of ESOTSM, a script full of flaws... The true masterpiece of original writing of 2004 was THE VILLAGE...
I know... you americans hate this movie. I'm Brazilian and we are less influenced by THE BUZZ and THE MEDIA... That's why we know BEFORE SUNSET, COLLATERAL, THE VILLAGE, MILLION DOLLAR BABY are all better and more perfect films than ESOTSM.
And please, stop talking about Hilary Swank. I think all this hate can be a true simpathy that you're trying to kill...
I am Brazilian, I do not agree with Hilary Swank's second Academy Award and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was the BEST picture released in 2004.
I posted the previous comment. My name is Marcelo, I try not to be anonymous.
Annette Bening was terrible in American Beauty? Hmm... I don't get that. Her performance was over the top, but the character was written that way. Any other way she might've played it would not have worked as well. It wasn't necessarily the most believable performance but as an over-the-top archetype, of sorts, it was a lot of fun. Really none of the characters in that movie were very 3D. That's really Alan Ball's fault.
I'm also pissed that this new wave of uber-Swankiness is tarnishing my memories of her ASTONISHING portrayal in Boys Don't Cry. I loved her in that. But like Naomi Watts in Mulholland Drive, I think it was mostly the direction. Sigh. When will Kimberly Pierce and David Lynch make their follow up films?
I don't ANYONE is saying she didn't deserve the Oscar for Boys Don't Cry but there's just a core bunch of people that aren't under this weird spell that makes people think Hilary's performance in M$B was the second coming or something.
But so what if Nat's picking on Hilary. I'm sure there's people who hate other people (Russell Crowe comes to mind) who scrutinise everything he does just because they hate him.
And, yes, Annette's Am. Beauty performance was over-the-top but that's the point.
The screenplay for Eternal Sunshine was brilliant and it's strange that anybody would fault it.
And I'm Australian and sort of liked The Village but best of the year? strange. But i'm sure everyone thinks that Before Sunset and Collateral are among the year's true best.
But back to Hilary. THe one thing I really want to know is... was Hilary this enthusiastic about Kimberley Pierce, her Boys Don't Cry director? I don't remember.
And yes, David Lynch needs to pick a project already!

People. People. How can you not read humor into what I'm writing when I say things like "I need ammunition for my imaginery feud!"
KIDDING.
Yes, I dislike Swank right now. But the obsessive "hating" on her is a joke.
But as for "getting over" the wrong people winning... I'm still in pain about Michelle Pfeiffer losing in 1989 so 'getting over' aint in my playbook when it comes to Oscar. If it was, how could I run this freaking site? There wouldn't be passion enough
God! Hilary Swank was not incredible but she was quite good. Bening's "Being Julia" perf was affected and stilted. Between the deserving Winslet, Staunton, Swank and Moreno, she was last, but it was a strong year and better her than Bening.
Come on, folks. If we've lost the ability to irrationally hate movie stars for no other reason than that they REALLY bug us, then the terrorists have won.
With that in mind, I'm beginning my imaginary feud with Keisha Castle-Hughes.
Starting . . . now.

"Nathaniel, go here:

Yes, it's a good article. But the thing that's totally funny about it being a "relax people! it's only the Oscars" type of article is that Lelek AGREES with the Academy decision. So, of course, it's measured and "let's not get too excited..." and He likes both films but likes M$B better so far him the ceremony was probably deeply satisfying. If I loved two films one slightly more. I'd be thrilled if they split the awards like that too (with the one I liked taking less but more important awards)
Obviously it's easier to let the choices cascade off you peacefully when you agree ;)
joe. I love you.
sooo funny.
If you need help fighting the valiant loyalist armies of Keisha, give me a call!
Sadly, Nathaniel, the only people on our side are, like, Bill Maher.
And with friends like that, who needs vaguely mysoginist child-hating self-aggrandizers?

(who will be getting on the Blogger train sooner than later and leaving this "anonymous" crap behind)
I only dislike Keisha because she stole Evan Rachel Wood's oscar nom, and became unjustly anointed "youngest best actress nominee ever" and will hold the title probably forever... unless Dakota Fanning gets really busy within, like, a year... and I don't like her much either. Otherwise i'd be fine with Keisha. I thought she was good in Whale Rider.
i am having a real fight with halle berry. do something with your career, bitch and while your at it..take out that damn weave and at least look good, which seems to be your only worthwhile quality.
hate her.
-damian
ps. did find some humor and respect in her accepting her Razzie award in person.

Annette in American Beauty: "I will sell this house today." Name me any actress who could better pitch that unhinged mantra, and I'll eat my dinner!
Rob
Rob --also thank you.
Bening was superb in American Beauty. Naturalistic acting is not automatically greater than Stylized acting... which is why Bening gets dinged so often.
i'm brazilian too. all my friends and i just HATE the village. most of my friends thought esotsm was the best movie of the year (i didn't). so, dear anonymous, speak for yourself.
i loved anette bening in american beauty, to me she was the best thing in the movie. my mother used to be that kind of person, and this is why i thought her performance was brilliant!
nathaniel, this is YOUR blog, if you can't hate hillary here at the point of looking ridiculous to people who are too afraid to say their names, well... where will you, then?
To the person who said ESOTSM had a terrible screenplay - you're an idiot.
Nathaniel, where do some of these people come from? My Oscar interest has faded a lot but I still keep coming back to your site because I enjoy your writing style and personality. If people don't get your humor and aren't able to connect your comments to what, at least it seems to me, is your real problem with awards ceremonies (relentless groupthink and politics trumping actual skill and artistry).
...way for me to look like an idiot, not even finishing my sentence before hitting send. Anyway... If people don't get your humor, they're the ones who need to get over it. Naysayers: come back with an equally tongue-in-cheek jab rather than ragging on someone you clearly find very interesting, otherwise why would you come to his site?
