10 Word Reviews

A Roundup of 2005 feature films I hadn't commented on yet in this here blog or on the site like Batman Begins, 9 Songs, Revenge of the Sith, The Beat That My Heart Skipped and more. Enjoy!

Also check out Joe's new column and vote on the new poll --this one probably won't hurt for as long as the 'classic actress' poll but it'll sting for a second.

OK, this is rough... Moore, Streep and Winslet are ALL in the M-Z group... there's no one in this A-L list who I can immediately get behind as "my favorite". Oh well. I'll just have to deliberate some...

Well, I decided on Huston... I keep thinking of 1990... her Grifters/Witches double play shows startling range... and Prizzi's Honor and the Addams Family films further showcase her unique gifts. Was seriously considering Foster, Hunter, and Kidman, though... actually I kind of regret not voting for Foster, who used to be my favorite actress when I was younger. But I needed to give a shout out to the unique and incomporable Huston, who I fear may not get a strong showing in this poll. (oops, might I be affecting the race here? I think not... I'm betting Kidman will win this)

I went with Jodie Foster, despite not having a ton of performances to go on, when you really think of it.

Also, great job on the 10 word reviews, Nat! They're fun, aren't they? I've got a whole backlog to get to myself.

On the reviews: Completely agree on Star Wars (C-), Sin City (C+), Ring 2 (D+), 9 Songs (D) and Cursed (D+) but I not on Batman (B+) and Charlie & The Chocolate Factory (B). I also liked 2046 a tad more (A-). Haven't seen Red-Eye, Grimm, The Beat or Whisky.

It was a toss up between Nicole Kidman, Joan Allen and Sigourney Weaver but I eventually went with Kidman because with her when I think "what's her best performance" I get seriously stumped and have at least 7 possible choices (To Die For, Moulin Rouge!, The Others, Birth, Dogville, The Hours and Dead Calm).

And then I considered that ALL of those, bar The Hours, are in my favourites of all time list. Yes, I liked Birth that much!

I was sort of surprised to see how much Kidman is in front by, though!

yes, Mto Z is way more of a killer since it contains 4 of the greatest actresses well, ever.
MOORE, STREEP, WINSLET, and of course La PFEIFFER! and that's just myfavorites. I hope of course that it's more interesting results that A-L so far. Kidman has rapidly built a very cool body of work but #1 by such a margin? Hmmm. I'm thinking some people need to rent more 70s and 80s movies ;)

How is Nicole Kidman winning this? Am I the only one here who went to the movies in the 70s?

Diane Keaton, Julie Christie, Jane Fonda, Angelica Huston, Cloris Leachman, Glenda Jackson all made my short list, but in the end I went with the one actress on the list I have unconditional love for - Madeline Kahn. Everything she did made laugh - Blazing Saddles, Paper Moon, Young Frankenstein and especially her hilarious debut as Eunice Burns in What's Up, Doc?

Joan Allen, Joan Allen,
Joan Allen. The Upside of Anger, The Contender, The Ice Storm, Nixon, The Crucible, Pleasantville, The Bourne Supremacy... Though I have to say, I did almost pick Madeline Kahn.

Voted for Judi Dench, though have to admit my choice was swayed more by her stage and TV work. Which wasn't really the point, was it? Still, if I watch Mrs Brown again I'm sure I'll feel less guilty.

Of the movies mentioned (that I’ve seen), I’d say: Batman Begins [B-], Charlie [C], Kingdom [C], 9 Songs [C], Ring 2 [D], Sin City [A-], Star Wars [C+], 2046 [A-]

I went for Glenn Close and I am surprised that she has had votes, I thought I would be the only one.
People have not forgotten The World According to Garp, The Big Chill, Fatal Attraction, Dangerous Liaisons, Hamlet.

Go Close.

Are you eventually going to do an actors poll as well?

Well I called it first. Nicole is killing in this poll. But if this poll is supposed to be about Nicole circa 1995 and earlier, then her margin of victory is really inappropiate.
Also, as I feared, Anjelica is not doing well at all. My vote is still her only one! Take heart, Anjelica, there are some who still love you.

I went for Dench as she owns every single film she's in. Perfect in any role. Keaton and Kidman are close behind though, such a tough poll.

I'd probably have voted for Blanchett if she'd been an option here.
Nathaniel, who'd you vote for? Hunter? Keaton? Inquiring minds wanna know.

I've said many times (actually, maybe not on here?) that i AM only 19 (20 in Oct) and I have not had a chance to see the collective works of people such as Jane Fonda, Madeleine Kahn et al. I hope to sometime in the near future but much like Nathaniel as of late, I just don't have that much time to sit down and watch them.

Plus, a lot of them haven't been released on DVD in Australia.

(the cheque from Kidman arrived today!)

Here's what I do when I have a hole in my viewing. I have mini festivals. Like rent 3 movies at once of one performer or director. And trust me... if you watch 3 movies by just about anyone you'll get at least a good sense of what their larger career is like.

I am sad that the 70s women are doing so poorly in the poll. Those are some great great actresses

Okay, I'd give Red Eye a B+. Craven still knows how to get it done. I can forgive Cursed when he has given us the Screams, Nightmare on Elm Street, New Nightmare, Hills Have Eyes, Last House on the Left, Red Eye and, er, Music From The Heart or whatever than Meryl Streep movie was called.
