Indie Spirit Noms

Indie Spirit Award nominations are here. More later on the site... big boosts for Jeff Daniels in Squid and the Whale, Goodnight and Good Luck, Capote, and Brokeback Mountain. Major slap to Junebug --how did that NOT manage a first feature nomination? Only screenplay and supporting actress when this is the INDEPENDENT SPIRIT AWARDS. This awards group continues to be strangely obsessed with big budget mini-majors.... which sorta renders them pointless since there are plenty of awards groups in existence to honor those films. They need to be focusing on true independents. My feeling at least.

No Gyllenhaal in supporting (uh oh). But Williams is there-yeah!

No screenplay nomination, either...

The ISAs are ever weird. Capote also shows itself to still be strictly the HOFFMAN show. No nod for Collins and if he was going to get the supporting drumbeats going -this was the place.

Gyllenhaal is in supporting. Just the other one.

yeah that was nice. Maggie is great in Happy Endings.

Random comment from a stranger:

I am very, very pleased with the nominations for The Squid and the Whale and Me and You and Everyone We Know.

The ISAs are weird sometimes.

Patricia Clarkson and the FFH screenplay weren't nominated either, and then FFH won everything it was up for.

I think Hoffman and Huffman will probably be seeing trophies, but the other categories will be tough calls.

me you and everyone we know will definitely be on my top ten list this year. Liked Squid a lot as well.

Random note:
Isn't it bizarre how similar-sounding the names of the two likely indie spirit winners are?

Phillip Seymor Hoffman
Felicity Huffman

Sound out the syllables. Weirdly similar. It's freaking me out a little bit.

Is it at all significant that there's no sign of "The White Countess"?

i wouldn't say so. but i think the CRASH miss is very weird.

This awards group is very strange. They do indeed seem to go more for the bigger scale movies (as in ones that approach the $20mil budget limit) but then those very movies miss out on nominations you'd think would have been easy gets.

Strange.

I can never really know what to think though because I haven't even heard of quite a few of the nominees (those that will probably reach our shores in 2011).

I dunno. Just like last year, some of the exclusions seem very strange. But then they go and surprise me by nomination someone like Greg Araki for Best Director (Mysterious Skin), a definite top 5 contender of mine.

Glad to see you really liked You & Me & Everyone We Know, Nat. I too enjoyed it emensely.

Best Actress, I think, will go to S. Epatha Merkerson who I thought featured in a TV Movie, but apparently those are elligable at these awards too.

I may stick around -- I enjoy it here. And yes, my Woody Allen obsession borders on unhealthy at times. Actually, I was Alvy Singer for Halloween last month; unfortunately, only one person understood the costume.

Is Alvy that esoteric?

And I am convinced that I am one of the only cinephiles that dislike Mysterious Skin. The narrative is horribly straightforward, even when it believes that it is being clever; it thrives on the audiences' discomfort and relies on their stupidity.

Oh, and Crash does not deserve any of its nominations. I recently saw Sarah Silverman: Jesus is Magic, but Crash is still the best racial comedy of the year.

NATHANIEL R said...

ha ha. good one.

Glenn Dunks said...

agreed. that was funny (even though I like Crash)

And, no Nick, you're definitely not the only one who disliked Mysterious Skin. Kris over at In Contention hates it and I believe Nat here wasn't a big fan. But I may be wrong.
