Another day. Another list. Whenever you get big media lists, they're always, naturally less idiosyncratic than individual list-making exercizes. But what they lack in fascinating quirk they make up for in their ability to represent generalized public opinion / time-capsule "who is hot" statements. That's the same reason why the Oscars can lean towards stupefyingly dull but still say interesting things about contemporary standards of quality.
Best thing? That Warren Beatty made it to the top 30. Even though the list is obviously slanted to right.this.very.second. because...
worst thing? Julia Roberts and Tom Cruise are higher than either Hepburn, Davis, Nicholson, Brando, and Streep? ??? Will Smith also appears. That's right: Will Smith. And he's also higher than Meryl Streep.

Let's be honest, though, Nat. Will Smith is a bigger movie star than Meryl Streep. I don't think Streep's name on a marquee can draw $50 million on opening weekend.

Well it's if strictly "star" the list is still ridiculous because where are Valentino or even, hell, Schwarzenegger (bigger than Will Smith, you know?)

I disagree that it's too right-now heavy. I think Cruise and Roberts' places are defensible, and definitely think some modern people like Hanks, De Niro, Pacino and Ford are too low. Smith definitely belongs here. Not so sure about Russell Crowe, Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp, etc. clogging up the bottom.
but, thinking about it, Will Smith is decidedly a huge movie star and should be further up the list. He's been in like 8 $150M grossers in the last decade (many on the strength of his presence alone), plus has an Oscar nom. Of the modern folks on this list, only Cruise and Hanks have anything approaching that track record.
And how long until we have to add Adam Sandler to the list?
