Two awards-junkies (myself & Joe Reid) on this past eventful week of precursors and questions that suddenly arrive. Is Crash finally crashing? Will ScarJo win the Globe on her 4th attempt? How hot is Jesse Bradford? What of a Brokeback backlash? What to do with Match Point? Will Gong Li strike back? How thin is Narnia? And more...
Read it and pretend you were there.

N: Yes. It's always sweet when former muses of deceased gay rebels totally dominate children's films. So subersive.
LOL Nathaniel that was friggin hilarious...
Great article but I'm not sure predicting a potential Brokeback backlash is the way to go, I mean, won't predicting something that isn't really there yet make it happen in the first place? OR perhaps this is Minority Report speaking from the other side of my brain....
i hear you but little ol me is not a big enough voice to cause something like that. i just know how the world works. and the 95% (give or take) of the world that's hetero seems to always feel threatened or at the very least uncomfortable with acknowledging that they they can't also claim the remaining percentage for total dominion.
Why any particular group with that much of a majority would object to/feel threatened by a sliver of a minority is beyond me. but then i'm a live and let live kinda guy and I never 'get' these things... i just notice them and scratch my head.
Tilda Swinton as Nico?! Oh my god, Nathaniel - why have you kept this from me? You have obviously lost all affection for me. I'll have to adopt Joe as my new boyfriend. He at least shares the important news.
First, I was wondering why there was no talk of Michelle Williams in the Supporting Actress race.
Second, I have to agree that Clooney's going to take the Supporting Actor trophy (I can't imagine Lee losing this-imagine the backlash against THAT). Laurence Olivier and Warren Beatty, by the way, lost on their first nominations for Best Director (Hamlet and Heaven Can Wait, respectively).
Third, I'm wondering about that Best Actress race, and hoping that someone pops up as a surprise. Huffman, Dench, and Witherspoon are locks. The smart money would be to bet on Theron and Knightley for the next two slots, but I'm saying that Knightley hangs on and Theron is bumped for...such a hard decision, maybe Watts (they've liked her before)?
I think this was my favorite film bitch convo transcript EVER. So funny.
And I like the new "ScarJo" lingo. Also, I have been saying she'd win that globe ever since it was revealed that her Match Point role was supporting. She is all over that shit.
I too fear a Clooney win in best director, but think about it:
1) GNaGL is not Dances With Wolves or Braveheart. It is a little B+W independent film that made $21 million. Does that sound like a best picture (or director) winner to you? Brokeback will actual make much more money than this... so the "box office" argument against it holds no water.
2) Brokeback will have more nominations than GNaGL, and will look very much like the winner... GNaGL cannot carry enough categories to win, and if Clooney won, he'd be one of at most two oscars for the film (the other being cinematography). Possible, but unlikely.
3) Ang Lee is overdue. If he loses again, it will get ugly.
4) MOST IMPORTANTLY... they have another category in which to reward Clooney. If he weren't an acting contender, I'd think his odds in director were better. There's no reason to deny Lee his oscar when Clooney has another one with his name on it... but then again, that didn't stop them from snubbing Marty for Clint.
Whatever. Clooney could certainly win, but Lee is very much the frontrunner... and Clooney will direct other films in the future. They know that.
Also, might AMPAS snub Howard and give him his pity nod in Best Song? It's possible...
Totally agree with you on Syriana. Siddig, Damon, and Plummer were all better than Clooney.
That Tilda Swinton/Nico news just made my day!
Pardon the language, but... HOLY FUCK!!! Tilda Swinton as Nico?!?! Why did I not know about this? Nico = a legend. Tilda = pretty close to a legend. Plus, The Velvet Underground are my favourite band of all time. I was hoping they'd make a VU movie some time soon - but this is pretty damn great.
Anyway. Great convo. I've decided (er, not because of this chat, but you did sort of confirm my thoughts) to scrap Crash and go with Match Point.
Adam's right on the George/Ang thing tho. GN&GL ain't no Dances With Wolves or Braveheart. Or even an Ordinary People (a genre the Academy loves, right?).
Or even a Reds, really (that would be its true awards counterpart)
It's also like 90 minutes long.
I say a Clooney win is unlikely.
