No "Goblet of Fire"? Gambon, Rickman, Richardson, Fiennes, Smith, Gleeson... they all did such a terrific/fun job. Even the tiny performances seemed carefully conceived. And even Daniel Radcliffe was quite terrific, something I would have never expected from the "He was their friend!" teenager.
I seriously don't get it.
my problem with the harry potter films is the stars, not the supporting players. I know the world is in love with the kidds who play harry, hermione, and ron but i honestly feel that not a one of them is more than adequate as an actor. And I've sat through 9 hours of their performances so it's my honest patient opinion. ;)
I just realized that you didn't put Jeff Daniels even in a mention on Best Actor-why?
He's probably considering him as Supporting...?
The Harry Potter ensemble thing is very understandable. The supporting players always give great perfs so it'd be silly to keep rewarding it year in year out. However, I did like Hermoine and Ron much more in the last two films - i still don't think Daniel Radcliffe can act when it comes to emotive scenes.
I liked all the kids in Harry Potter but I wouldn't consider them award worthy either. I think Hermione in particular is so much less annoying now than in the first one. I found her quite endearing, actually.
Oh, but i have to ask... WHERE is Pride & Prejudice in best adapted screenplay? It isn't getting mentioned anywhere, not even in the film bitch awards, where it is your #3 film. This film would not be good without a good screenplay. Does it not count cause it's been adapted before or something? I don't get why this screenplay is getting dissed by everyone. It deserves an oscar nomination.
Speaking only for myself, I have to admit I have a hard time recognizing adaptations of such accomplished works. Because, hasn't the heavy lifting already been done by Jane Austen? I know you could apply that standard to all adaptations, but it's more blatant when you're working off a very famous work. Unless there are big degree of difficulty points, it seems like less of an accomplishment.

exactly. plus, when it comes to P&P, the writing is actually not the best thing about it (of course the story is superb -but that's Austen). the best thing about it is its energy and how all these separate elements are imbuing it with such energy.
i know i go on and on about energy with that film but it's hard to make something that old and familiar feel that renewed.
But, like Adam, I thought was also in some part to the screenplay which managed to condense the entire novel into a 2 hour movie and still make it feel complete and as if it weren't missing a beat.
Oh well, it's one of my top 2 Adapted Screenplays anyway.
Kudos for nominating Beat My Heart Skipped for screenplay and Junebug for Ensemble Cast (though I do think Brokeback, Me and You, and Kings and Queen should have placed also).
Well then, by that standard, shouldn't Sense & Sensibility not have been an award-worthy adaptation either? Yet it won the golden globe and the oscar. Is that because it was the star Emma Thompson who wrote it? I smell a double standard here. Since most seem to agree that the films are in the same league.
I think the huge divergence from the S&S screenplay love is what bothers me the most.
