Critics Gone Wild!

DAY THREE of the Oscar Symposium. Nerves are frayed. Hormones are raging. Non-Sequitors are rampant. Funny banter is everywhere. It's Critics Gone Wild --a three page spectacular today @ The Film Experience.

Off-topic, but I'm curious... given your love of Jeff Daniels' Squid perf, do you think he deserved a best actor nom over the ones who were nominated? Would you have nominated him over Hoffman or Howard? Just curious.

I think that if Daniels and Linney had both been tagged as supporting and campaigned that way from the outset, they would've found noms relatively easily... but that would've been awfully hard to carry off after the globes and ISAs went and called them leads... it's doable to call just one person from your film supporting when he's gotten lead awards, but it seems near-impossible to do that with two. Just too much convincing and confusion to deal with. But given the tininess and darkness of the film, I think even globe and ISA nods for the two are cause for celebration.

Nathaniel, whats your take on Keira Knightley's performance ? I think it lands somewhere between Reese's 'natural' feel and Judi Dench's 'phoning it in'. Yes Keira is great in the film and yes it wasn't forced, but you sense its the sort of role she was born to play. I think she may have a good chance of a shock win in this category.

Keep it up, guys. I´m at a festival and theoretically supposed to be seeing tons of films from countries I´ve never heard of, but I can´t stop hitting reload. Your man Josh cracks me up. Hell, you all do. This must run and run...
