Longtime readers know "The Boyfriend" from his infrequent but oft-sarcastic blog comments (what is that about anyway?) but since today is our anniversary (8 Years. Holla!) I thought I should mention him...but in a movie related way since I think it rather icky when celebrities give too much detail about their personal romances. [Not that I'm a celebrity, but if you have to have a model for behavior, why not the gorgeous, rich, and fabulous?] Anyway, it always causes trouble when they go on and on about their romantic life so they are wise to keep their lips zipped. Brangelina...well done. The silence? Good.
The Boyfriend is a total and incurable Francophile when it comes to le cinema. His favorite movie this year --well, I knew it'd be French-language. It always is. I think it's his way of rubbing it in that he doesn't need the subtitles. If it's improbably not French like, say, 2001's Mulholland Dr...then it's still somehow connected to la France. Lynch's latest masterpiece was French financed. Canal + don'cha know?
So when I asked him what his favorite film of 2005 was recently he, hilariously true to form, says "Hmmmm. It's either Caché or Kings and Queen. Maybe Kings and Queen." Some of his other favorite cinematic things? Documentaries, Catherine Deneuve, Johnny Depp, Ingmar Bergman, Matthew Barney's Cremaster. I suspect part of his general movie-standoffishness is mere snobbery. He prefers art, Björk, and fashion. Example. He loves Brokeback Mountain --I know in my heart that he does--yet he refuses to fully admit to it because, you know, everyone else does. He doesn't care at all about "best ofs" or "awards" or "lists" of anything. How demented is that? But it's lovely that he is so patient with my full-time obsession.

So lovely Topic. I totally agree with "The Boyfriend" about "Caché", you know. And I love this site and this blog because here we can talk about Cinema (as an art) and not about American Cinema (only).
Thanks from Europe.

Happy Anniversary Nathaniel and The Boyfriend!!
My franco-friend and I are soon celebrating 22 years. He's not into lists or awards either. Vive la difference!
Happy Anniversary! :)
Lovely ! :)
Happy Aniversary !
It's official: The Boyfriend has great taste.
Happy Aniversary from The South.
Congratulations Nathaniel & The Boyfriend!
Happy Anniversary!!!!
Aw, happy, happy, happy!
Oh My God...my english(francophile) boyfriend of 8 years sounds very much the same. I sometimes have to drag him kicking and screaming to films during the Oscar period. We last saw Walk the Line and he agreed to see Brokeback - but was not so overcome like I was...
He has absolutely refuses to go see Munich and he really hated The Constant Gardener - says it was a lazy liberal fiction - and quite dangerous since it lets the Pharmaceutical companies off when they actually do something wrong - I agreed with him and am of african origin.
Anyway, enough about us - Happy Anniversary Nathaniel and partner - keep up the very great work you do each year...xx
You FORGOT to say that The Boyfriend is incredibly sexy, utterly charming, and absolutely hilarious. Together, you two are like Astaire and Rogers, Lunt and Fontanne, and Lucy and Desi all rolled into one.
Much love on your anniversary...get married, already!
Happy Anniversary! 8 years is so great!
Happy aniversary! Eight years is such a great acomplishment. ☺
bisous, mon amour. je t'aime.
and thanks to all the rest of you. you're just too sweet.
and, by the way, it's so much more than "mere" snobbery!
Astaire and Rogers... hee. I guess that makes The Boyfriend Fred Astaire.
Happy anniversary, you two.
jesus, 8 years? That's mighty impressive. You've lasted longer than about 100 Hollywood marriages bundled together!
Happy anniversary from Australia (i wonder if I'll get to SEE the boyfriend when i'm in New York - perhaps, perhaps, perhaps)
i don't know kamikaze... photos are rare and he doesnt show up in mirrors either.
curious.
Bigtime Congratulations Nathaniel and Boyfriend both on the anniversary and on your taste in film (coincidentally, my favorite film of the year was Kings and Queen and my boyfriend's was Brokeback Mountain, heh).
