yeah, he wouldn't appear anywhere near that high on my list but I understand where you're coming from.
He's a cutiepie too.
I adore Ewan McGregor! His performance in Moulin Rouge is one of the best of the decade.
Alas, there goes my number 1
Glad to see Ewan place this high though. Moulin Rouge and Big Fish are among my favorite Ewan movies (Big Fish actually was he first movie to make me cry), and Down With Love is one of 2 movies that features Renee in it that I will still watch regularly, mostly because Ewan/David Hyde Pierce both crack me up.
Two unusual thoughts on Ewan McGregor:
1. Here in Las Vegas, the Bellagio fountains are choreographed to many tunes, including "Your Song" by Elton John. It doesn't work for me because the original version lacks exuberance, and I always wonder how improved that fountain show would be if they used the better version. In my opinion, Ewan owns that song.
2. Watching Episodes I-III, I realized that Ewan is not only an outstanding Obi-Wan (in a group of mostly dull performances), he's the finest actor ever to work opposite CGI. Notice how natural he is interacting with Jar-Jar and others, and how wooden and stilted Liam Neeson is, an otherwise excellent actor.
Like him a lot in Young Adam. Want desperately to recast him in Moulin Rouge (sorry, and for those of you who read my Binoche-in-Chocolat love yesterday, rest assured I haven't lost my mind). Like him a lot in Down With Love. Hate him in the Star Wars prequels. Like him a lot in Nora. Unimpressed with him in Black Hawk Down.
...and so on it goes for Ewan and I in the Aughts. Still, we'll always have the 90s.

Recast Ewan in Moulin Rouge!? Um... okay... I guess...
I heart Ewan. I knew he'd be #3 from the very start.
I would never take back his gold medal.
Recast McGregor in Moulin Rouge?! But...but...he was PERFECTION in that movie! Such a beautiful, romantic and heartfelt performance.
AND he gave the only credible performance in Star Wars. He isn't bogged down by bad direction and terrible dialogue. That's how good an actor he is!
Ewan makes me smile too. :)
Well, I said "mostly dull performances." I think Ian McDiarmid also rose to the occasion, particularly in Episode III. (I could take or leave the rest.)
'Alec McGuinness'. Good stuff.
is it wrong that I'm disappointed he's two slots above depp?
i don't want to be resentful but i am.
Well I can live with Ewan at #3. And there is no one whou could compete with Jude and Gael. Hands down.
But wat I do not understand is that for example Tom Hanks, Sam Rockwell, Will Smith, Philip Seymour Hoffman or Jared Leto do not rank at all. I know they are not worthy of a top ten spot, but each of them has had (at least) one great performance this decade so far. They could have appeared at about 80-100, no?
of the ones you've listed Sam Rockwell and Jared Leto might have made the countdown had I seen more. I like them sometimes. Just haven't had any love for a particular performance which is what is required. Hanks is the definition of overvalued to me. Smith coasts on charisma to me (though I did think he was very fine in Ali but that awful 'i'll be in my trailer' I, Robot turn removed any leftover good will.
you can see some runners up here (when I began the countdown way back in February --*crikies, this took a long time) but the spreadsheet calculations actually involved 200ish men.
*glenn, you said i could use the word.
I definitely understand your arguments.
And as it has taken so long, I've completely forgotten about the runners-up post. Rhys-Meyers is another one, I think should have made it. But well, it's your choice. If I want them on a list, I can do one on my own.
Right now I totally feel like watching Moulin Rouge! for the umpteenth time. In fact, I think I will!
Wonderful and informative web site. I used information from that site its great. » »
