1996 Supporting Actress Smackdown w/ Tim, Nick, and Stinky Lulu. I really wanted to do it but --argh. My apologies to them and you. Now I don't get to tell you how absolutely dumbheaded I think The Crucible: The Movie is (and to think I loved it in '96 -ouch) but how Joan Allen miraculously ignores the evil movie and does her righteous best. I was looking over the extremely early Oscar predictions and I noticed you didn't list "My Blueberry Nights," the new English language film from Wong Kar Wai. I'm guessing you think it won't be completed in time because it seems hard to rule out the facts: Wong Kar Wai directing, Natalie Portman, Jude Law (Oscar nominees), Rachel Weisz (Oscar winner), and Norah Jones in her film debut. Plus, it is in English which might make it a bit more accessible/friendly to Oscar voters.

I didn't know of it back in April when typing it. But regardless, WKW is not a speedy filmmaker so I suspect it won't be out for a good long while still

but thanks for the tip. It sounds exciting (direct/cast/etc...)

Ah, I have a soft spot in my heart for The Crucible. And for Joan Allen. Love the movie despite its flaws, but if I were a Hollywood director with enough clout, I would totally redo it to give it a better feel (Rent also)

Out of curiousity, how would you have ranked the actresses, Nathaniel?

i have not seen barbara hershey's performance (which won over at the smackdown) but otherwise i'd probably go...

marianne jean-baptiste
joan allen
juliette binoche
lauren bacall

but, joan allen is the only one I've seen recently. so that's a guess ;)

I guess I'll jump at the opportunity to make a list of my very own favorite supporting performances of 1996.

1. Katrin Cartlidge in Breaking the Waves
2. Marianne Jean-Baptiste
3. Joan Allen
4. Courtney Love in The People vs. Larry Flynt
5. Renee Zellweger in Jerry Maguire

So glad SOMEBODY gave a shout-out to the incredible perf. of Miss Love, that disheveled mess of a human being/rock star/acting natural. I thought she was aces in TP vs. LF and robber of an Oscar nom. So good to know I'm not alone.

Marco

P.S. Love me some Joan Allen too. What an image. God she was great in that film.
