Carol. Amber. Sarah. Linda. Cathy

Someone please... Todd? P.T.? Neil? You who know her best --give her another woman worthy of their company.

and get her out of the rut of playing the fifties housewife/frightened mother who's lost her child.

i pray to god she is comedic perfection in 'trust the man'. PLEASE GOD.

and btw, you forgot laura brown. (if you didn't, i'd like to know why.) ;)

I don't believe he considered Laura Brown Juli's best perf (I remember him being destinctly pissed off if she won the Oscar for it - which he ultimately did not.

But, seriously, not to ruin a certain feature I'm gonna have some time soonish in the future on the blog - Juli's perf in Safe. Seriously, one of the greatest I've ever seen.

"which he ultimately did not." he = she. obviously.

yeah. i got on a weird high horse about that at the time. foolishly i always wish that people will win for their very best work ;) --but of course i'm pisssed she doesn't already have an Osar.

Well, naturally.

Very pleased to see you included Sarah Miles in The End of the Affair, which I think is -- shot-for-shot, moment-by-moment -- Juli's finest performance. Many people don't like the movie, and therefore don't like her in it. But to watch her go from her initial velvety flirtations to the "Maybe there's no other kind" speech to what is perhaps the most restrained, perfect deathbed scene in movies...it's ecstatic.

I hope she never wins an Oscar - it'll be another thing we can make fun of Ampass about (see also Barbara Stanwyck, Mia Farrow, Liv Ullmann).

I rarely seem to agree with the common consensus around here, but Julianne Moore is indeed a remarkable actress - and a remarkably beautiful one at that! I've never seen a woman age better. From that mousy (though fascinating) thing in Short Cuts, she's morphed into a graceful, strikingly sexy goddess.

And I agree with J.J. Gittes: Sarah Miles is her most flawless and vivid of many flawless, vivid performances.

No Yelena? Such a great performance, in a fascinating, if somewhat flawed, film.

I should add, though, that I don't mean to detract from any of those performances. I love me some Julianne Moore (I'm pretty sure I've waxed ecstatic abouted her previously on this blog).

She is simply "NOT" a very strong actress.

steve, yelena would be the next one if i was expanding the visual. she is great in it.

Yeah, nothing more to add, really. I'm starting to think she'll never win an oscar. I fear that her best days may be behind her... though this year does look promising.

Will Trust the Man and Marie and Bruce ever be released? Maybe she's great in them, who knows.

Hey, Nat, you just got called out over at Auteur Lust for not giving Michelle Pfeiffer a FB nomination for What Lies Beneath. Better lay a smackdown real quick!

On Topic: I am very new to watching movies for their quality as opposed to popcorn value, so I have missed out on many Julianne performances. But I have seen Far From Heaven and The Hours, and damn, girl can act. I get that Amber is Amber Waves from Boogie Nights and that Sarah is Sarah Miles from The End of the Affair, but could you enlighten me to Carol and Linda?

Carol = Carol White in Safe. A deliriously great performance. Heartbreaking and haunting (the "I love you" mantra gets me every. single. time.). Also, deceptively funny. I still chuckle at her reaction to the new couch.

Linda = Linda Partridge in Magnolia. Also deliriously great, and my first exposure to Moore - it's remained one of my favorites. I remember watching the movie, and one early shot that almost took my breath away is the one where she's leaning down to kiss Jason Robards on the forehad and the camera gracefully follows her - I was so mystified by her even at that beginning scene that she stood out from all the impressive things happening around her. Then, of course, there's the pharmacy scene. Sigh.

The pharmacy scene in Magnolia is my favorite Julianne Moore scene ever.

But yeah, I do want to see her in something where it's not demanded of her to have a complete emotional breakdown, even though tis her speciality.

wow, really?? just out of curiosity, could you tell me what you didn't like about her in "the hours"? i'm just trying to think of something and honestly, I can't.

i saw a bit of safe a couple of years ago, but never viewed it completely. it's on my netflix queue though (along with about 400 other, granted, but it's still on there.)

WOW. mia farrow really never got nominated for an oscar??? that's astounding to me, (her perf in rosemary's deserved the award alone)... and they'll never award ullmann because... well, she's foreign. speaking in a foriegn language. besides del toro, who else has pulled off a win doing that?

but i just watched her the other day in 'hour of the wolf' (not the best of bergman but as with all his films, it's a great trip) and she was the only thing about that movie that kept it grounded. you have no idea what in the hell is going on, but she just had this gravity to her... this beautiful, mild, subtly sensual persona that made watching her just, such a treat. and i haven't even caught "scenes from a marriage" or "saraband" yet.

Sophia Loren and Roberto Benigni.

If Scenes from a Marriage wasn't declared ineligible, I have a feeling that Ullman would've won easily.
