Friday Song and Dance: Oscar Nominees

A month ago I sent you off to the weekend with some Beyoncé, Toni Collette, Meryl Streep, and Devotchka music --all movie related. Did you like it? Hope so because here's another musical kick-off for the weekend. Surely your boss won't mind if you're kicking back to tunes every casual Friday? If you like the little musical interludes, I'll keep 'em.

Here's four of our Best Actress nominees showing off their pipes or dance moves. From left to right: Kate Winslet singing "What If" from some animated movie. But god I love to look at her. Judi Dench singing "Send in the Clowns" from one of a gazillion Sondheim tribute concerts. Penelope Cruz dancing around (and presumably lipsynching again like she did in Volver) in La niña de tus ojos. Finally, though I've probably shared it before, I can never get enough of Meryl Streep singing "ME" from Death Becomes Her. hi-larious. We'll let Helen Mirren rest her vocal chords since she's still got three major acceptance speeches to get through.

I think Penélope really sang in "La niña de tus ojos"

Penélope definitely sang herself in La niña de tus ojos :-)
and in German too: http://youtube.com/watch?v=K8wr8jOlVac

Love the music clips, Nath. Keep 'em coming.

If Penélope can really sing, why on earth did Pedro not let her do so in Volver? Her lip-synching was the only off thing about the whole movie!

I thought the lip-synch by Penelope was sooooo Almodovar, which made it beautiful in my eyes. Reminded me of past lip-synching glory, like in Dark Habits.

THANK YOU for the Judi clip though! Not seen that one. Sigh. The performance. The frail vocal. Perfection. I OWE YOU!

The Judi performance is from "Hey Mr. Producer," which was a tribute to Cameron Mackintosh, not Stephen Sondheim. Just thought you should know! Great clips, though. Thanks.

Daveylow, as you're probably aware, you're sitting on a potential eBay fortune with that cast recording! Me too!

I actually bought the Kate Winslet single. Incredibly soppy of me but I really like that song. Meryl rules though. Love the routine.

Arlright, I'm officially in love with Kate Winslet. She was such a fcking great voice! How come she is not in musicals more often!! I LOVE HER!!!

And Penelope can't sing jack. Not with that nasal voice of hers. In both Volver and La niña de tus ojos she had to lip-synched with another singer's track.

I HEART WINSLET!

I agree that there was something beautiful about Cruz's lipsynch in Volver. It's like Pedro was daring us to believe.

And I doubt Meryl can win an oscar for Mamma Mia!. Sweeney Todd, sure. Sad that that didn't happen. But Mamma Mia!? I think it's just another globe nod on her resumé.

I Heart Kate Winslet!!!!!!!!!!

God, that was beautiful.

No interest in seeing whatever movie that is [I know it's a second rate animated Christmas Carol]. Which is sad, because, well...

KATE!!!!!!!!!!

a Globe WIN adam k. plus it IS Meryl so at least an Oscar nom is not completly out of the question. But I do agree adam that Meryl would have been great as Mrs. Lovett. I'm not entirly sold on Sweeny Todd as of yet (still love A Little Priest).

But Judi Dench on the otherhand....When is her musical coming. Maybe Follies in the near future with Judi Dench???? Wishful thinking, i know.

OMG and Kate Winslett. Is there anything she CAN'T do? Hugh Jackman is doing a musical sometime soon called 'If You Could See Me Now', i think im going to start a push for Kate Winslett to star oppoiste him in that movie as Elizabeth.

Kate-wise, simply go to Amazon UK, but the full soundtrack to the movie (ASIN: B00005RRQ8) from the Marketplace for any price above 64p from the places that offer international shipping; that's just over a dollar before your shipping charge.

Contains the song AND the video (presumably as CD-Rom content).
