Supporting Actress 2006: My Ballot

Did you know Mr. Bleichert that Ramona Boulevard is named after me? When Emmett married me for my father's money he promised my family that he would use his influence with the city zoning board to have a street named after me. All he could manage was a dead end block in a red light district in Lincoln Heeeiiights
If I had an Oscar ballot, these five women would feature: a drunk mad heiress, a careless nanny, a murder victim, a snobbish fashion plate and a dithering folk singer. See the list and the runners up

Nice picks.

How on Earth did DePalma miss the opportunity to do the ultimate Hitch homage and cast Mia Kirshner both as Madeleine Linscott AND The Dahlia? It would have gone some way towards making the plot more credible, and given Kirshner a plum doppelganger role.

Lovely.

But Streep and no Maura?

No Sommerville in sight? That was an immensely powerful presence.

Wowza. Not expecting both Dahlia ladies to get in, but sure glad that they did. Have to buy that movie ASAP.

Sad to see no Lola Dueñas or Vera Varmiga; I definitely thought the latter would be finalist at the least.

Yaseen Ali said...

"a" finalist, is what I meant. Curse my bad grammar.

Yaseen Ali said...

Wow, I'm just mucking it up today - Vera FARMIGA is what I meant. Hopefully I won't have to return to correct something else and make an even bigger fool out of myself.

Yaseen Ali said...

Back again, although not to correct anything.

Has anyone noticed that the three revealed acting races so far each have two actors from the same film (King/Scotland, LMS and Dahlia?) Neat.

Glenn Dunks said...

Oh holy jesus, YES!!!!

Fiona Shaw!!!!! I thought I was going to be the only person crazy enough to actually put her in my five finalists and not just merely praise her. Mia is a great choice too, but Fiona is where it's all at for me.

Anon 11.49, I completely agree. I'm not entirely sure why he didn't think to cast Mia as both characters. Like, when ScarJo yells "SHE LOOKS LIKE THAT DEAD GIRL" didn't everybody go "No she doesn't!"

Okay... weird nominees everywhere.

I was going to call you a comformist conventionalist, but after putting the two best Dahlia perfs, I have to ask:

"Are you, like, a crazy person?"
[Natalie Portman, V for Vendetta]

I have Shaw and Kirshner classified as Limited/Bit/Cameo/whatever. I really thought Shaw was. Actually she placed. And Kirshner just missed a nom, 6th place.

And why does everyone think that Mark Wahlberg is good in The Departed?!?!?!? Is it because he's the only one who lives?!?! [gasps!] lol. Seriously? And I am the only person who thought Paul Dano had the best perf in LMS? I already know the answer. My Supporting Actress [AT THIS POINT]:

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS, DRAMA
Claire-Hope Ashitey, Children of Men
Adriana Barraza, Babel
Angela Basset, Akeelah and the Bee [Shut up!]
Angelina Jolie, The Good Shepherd
Rinko Kikuchi, Babel

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS, MUSICAL OR COMEDY
Toni Collette, Little Miss Sunshine
Emily Blunt, The Devil Wears Prada
Virginia Madsen, A Prairie Home Companion
Meryl Streep, The Devil Wears Prada + A Prairie Home Companion
Emma Thompson, Stranger Than Fiction

Together, it's probably:

Barraza
Jolie
Kikuchi
Streep
Thompson

RUNNERS-UP: Vera Farmiga (The Departed); Sharon Stone & Demi Moore (Bobby); Mandy Moore (American Dreamz)

Yeah. Stop laughing.

I actually have Paul Dano as my winner for best supporting actor... and I just can't believe the nominees for best supporting actress Nathaniel (I mean, are you for real?).

I have a feeling that Nat's gonna put Hudson in lead...

J.D. said...

Let's see:

Nat has already given away Penelope Cruz and Judi Dench in lead, and I'm seeing Meryl Streep there too. JHud seems incredibly likely, but the 5th spot, idk.

It could Mirren, but him liking Marie so much, it could be Dunst. For all we know, it's Rachel Weisz!

My Prediction:

Penelope Cruz, Volver
Judi Dench, Notes on a Scandal
Jennifer Hudson, Dreamgirls
Helen Mirren, The Queen
Meryl Streep, The Devil Wears Prada

SWITCH-OUT: Kirsten Dunst, Marie Antoinette

Anyone else see that happening?

My Nominees for the Best Actress in a Supporting Role 2006:

Adriana Barazza – BABEL
Emily Blunt – THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA
Toni Colette – LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE
Jennifer Hudson – DREAMGIRLS
Kate Winslet – ROMANCE & CIGARETTES

I still don't understand why Rinko Kikuchi is so unappreciated here. If deafness is such a tantalizing 'hook' you'd think it would have popped up more since Marlee Matlin. I really do think she gave a fantastic performance that is undervalued solely because certain elements of her character could be viewed as 'baity' by the twenty-four people who actually think in those terms. She was certainly better than the Mexican nanny, who did an admirable enough job of doing absolutely nothing.

Rinko Kikuchi is mesmerizing in Babel. She totally stole the movie..I kept wishing they would just focus on her.

Hudson is not a lead. She disappears for a good quarter of the movie.

Barry said...

what happened to RACHEL WEISZ?? I reallly thought you would honour her here. Not even a runner up??

Great list. My own looks like this:

- Adriana Barraza
- Emily Blunt
- Shareeka Epps
- Ashley Johnson

with the last slot to be filled by Shaw, Hudson, or Streep. I can't make up my mind!

Hudson won't make the lead list. Too competitive. And really, she just wasn't that great. Most of her non-singing scenes were totally average.

The Black Dahlia was one of the more frustrating experiences I had at the movies this year. I'm tempted to say it's a mess of colossal proportions, but when you get a talented director and a talented cast and you get... THAT, there must be some method to his madness.

What it is though, I'm not quite certain.

My choices:
Emily Blunt - Prada
Adrianna Barazza - Babel
Rachel Weisz - The Fountain
Sandra Bullock - Infamous
Maribel Verdu - Pan's Labyrinth

I might've glanced over someone but as of right now, these are the ones that immediately jumped to mind.

That's where I'm kind of disappointed, but that's your ballot. Barazza, Blunt, Streep, Kinnear /you seem to eventually notice how good he's in LMS, I believe you didn't like it the first time you've watched it/, Haley and Wahlberg are certainly worthy choices. I didn't like Black Dahlia's women but I just didn't like the film at all and it does affect my opinion. I don't get why Steve Carell was better than Alan Arkin /grandpa-granddaughter relationship was cute/ and how come Eddie Murphy made it to the shortlist. Well, I actually liked the performance, but I don't think it deserves that - finalist is enough. He sings well and dances well and what you wrote is true, but in fact it's much of his typical role.

SUPPORTING ACTRESS
1. Emily Blunt, "The Devil Wears Prada"
2. Abigail Breslin, "Little Miss Sunshine"
3. Adriana Barraza "Babel"
4. Shareeka Epps "Half Nelson"
5. Meryl Streep "A Prairie Home Companion"

SUPPORTING ACTOR
1. Michael Sheen "The Queen" /but: isn't he lead?/
2. Jackie Earle Haley "Little children"
3. Alan Arkin "Little Miss Sunshine"
4. Greg Kinnear, "Little Miss Sunshine"
5. Justin Bond "Shortbus" /although I didn't like "Shortbus", I'm SHOCKED he didn't make it even to the semi-finals/

You don't have to "get" why some people like Steve Carell more than Alan Arkin in Little Miss Sunshine.

"She was certainly better than the Mexican nanny, who did an admirable enough job of doing absolutely nothing."

Yeah, I don't get the Adriana Barraza stuff. Her character had nothing to do but look mopey, then a bit happy - but not TOO happy, and then scream a lot. I wasn't that big on Kikuchi either, but when I wish the entire movie was just her storyline I can tell she did something right.

J.Hud's in lead, but I doubt she'll get nominated there. Nat's said already he considers her lead.

Yay for Kirshner. She would be on my ballot too -- though I loved Shaw as well. My picks:

Blunt
Epps
Kirshner
Maura
Streep

I might replace one of those with Shaw or Barazza, but I'm confused.

the weirdest thing about doing these lists is that you noticed how unbalanced things are from year to year. For example: All but one of my nominees for last year's Best actress race would be not in the running this year for my nominations. And the supporting actor nominess. Honestly there's only one of them that I truly love. A bad year for that category.

so seeing Eddie Murphy make it might seem weird since I think it's a good but not great performance but it made it because 2006 was empty in this category (in my mind at least)

sometimes you have too many great ones: best actress candidates in 06 go on forever. they almost didn't exist in '05

and the reason that Shaw and Kirshner who both have only 6 minutes of screen time are not in limited/cameo role is I think I started misusing that category last year with that Hurt nomination...

I think that category should be for people with only one scene or people with scenes throughout where they are never really the focus and where you could imagine them ending up the cutting room floor.

Dahlia doesn't exist without either of these performances so calling them cameos or "limited" was bugging me (though they both were originally considered for that)

Really great picks for Best Supportin Actress. Words cannot express the joy I feel you mentioned Danielle Proulx as a semi-finalist for C.R.A.Z.Y..

My own ballot looks like this:

*Emily Blunt for The Devil Wears Prada
*Vera Farmiga for The Departed¨
*Keira Knightley for The Jacket
*Danielle Proulx for C.R.A.Z.Y.
*Shawnee Smith for Saw II

Kind of funny that The Black Dahlia is having a great showing at the Film Bitch Awards. Funny and great.

I'll vote for Emily.
Also you liked the Black Dahlia which is good :)

I sometimes never know what I should consider a cameo/limited performance and what to consider for the geniune awards.

For me this year cameo/limited players that stuck out more than any were Viola Davis and Donna Murphy in World Trade Centre, Kat Stewart in Em4Jay, Sandra Oh in Hard Candy, the two Dahlia girls + Rose McGowen, Marylouise Burke in Prairie Home Companion...

In the men's area there's not as many. Maybe Bruce Willis in Fast Food Nation, Shane Bourne in Kokoda and Bud Tingwell in Jindabyne.

I can't remember how long David Bowie was in The Prestige though, but if it was short enough he'd definitely win.

Excellent list, Nat.

I think I'm posting my preferred nominees for Supporting Actress tomorrow. And what's interesting is I'm not sure if we'll have a single overlap...

I love this list, and I'm all about the Dahlia women, who would certainly duking it out for the win in my awards, if I picked winners. I'm just mad that Nathaniel dropped his noms before I did, but what that really means is, I'm just mad that David Lynch has kept me waiting so long on Inland Empire so that I could frigging announce.

Great choices, Nathaniel!
