It's absolutely silly to prejudge movies before seeing them... but I'm silly. Here is the teaser for Atonement (which you'll recall is all over my early bird Oscar predictions)
This first look gives me hope that those predix weren't totally foolish. It looks terrific at least: costumes, cinematography, a sweeping epic feel and a hint of serious performances --lots of shots of James McAvoy and Keira Knightley both looking grave and potentially wonderful. What say ye?

It definitely looks awesome.
HOLY.
SHIT.
Now THAT,
is a movie.
Looks incredible. But, is Romola Garai lead, supporting, or supporting by ways of star power?
And if the music is from the score, Nomination #2 for Marianelli.
The character played by Garai is probably the main one in the film, but she has to share it with Saoirse Ronan and Vanessa Redgrave. So I doubt that Romola's part of it can amount to more than supporting.
Yeah, I should've given this more love in my own year-in-advance predictions. Don't know what I was thinking. Stupid. I only predicted it for supporting actress (Garai) and adapted screenplay.
Don't know how I feel about Keira, though. Her performance seemed... weird. Maybe the way they cut it together here was just unflattering.
But McAvoy and the film itself look like they could hit very very big. I really should've predicted them. Oh well.
I should read this book.
Gave me goose bumps! Thanks for the heads up on the trailer! Here is hoping that Pride and Prejudice was not a fluke and that Keira is as good as she looks to be.
Only one word comes to mind after seeing that....
damn
I am dying to see this movie now
Looks very handsome, but I hope this doesn't go the "Painted Veil" route.
McAvoy wouldn't have been my first thought for his character's role (he seems too slight, somehow - physically, that is) but I think he'll do good.
Garai will be supporting, though her *character* is the - well, the controlling consciousness, anyway. Not to sound trivial, and I love Romola, but why does she look so frumpy in this movie?
Wow. Just beautiful. I absolutely adored the book and thought how filmic it was at the time (surprised it took this long for a film to surface). Here's hoping it does the book justice. Though in the hands of Joe Wright - who made an art movie out of an Austen novel - I'm not at all worried.
Talking about Oscar predictions... I managed to catch La Vie en rose at this French Film Festival in London a couple of weeks ago...and all I can say is how gutted I now am about predicting Cotillard for a Best Actress nom. That performance should not be anywhere near Oscar's shortlist - it's pure caricature. The film itself is awful - if I were Cotillard I'd be mightily pissed off at the editor for butchering any semblance of character progression in the original performance.
Thanks for the link. I absolutely LOVED it.
I bought Ian McEwan's book and I can't wait to read it.
I will updated my Academy Awards predictions NOW!
I have seen Atonement and James McAvoy and Romola Gari absolutely shine in the movie. Not too sure about Keira though she was too wooden for me.
Overall Okay movie, I wanted to love it but I felt kind of empty by the end of the movie. I don't know why!!!
James McAvoy is the best thing about Becoming Jane IMO, a movie that won't have any Oscar traction (it's a poor person's Pride & Prejudice). But having a few noticed roles in one year may help him get his first nom for Atonement. Maybe he'll be this year's mid-20s Actor nominee, following Gosling and Ledger (and a long drought!).
Amir, v disappointing on Cotillard. That means I wasted one of my Actress predictions too :(
1. How could anyone have seen Atonement yet?
2. I think we've learnt from times past that even if a movie is awful, that doesn't mean it's the end of it's awards life.
Wow this looks amazing. Has a very mature sweeping epic look to it which is just right for oscar. Maybe Focus finally has their best picture win with this one! They sure know how to campaign.
Also, this should be used as a perfect example of a trailer that makes you die to see the movie but hardly reveals anything about the plot!
*Gasp* I can't wait until December!
Now, I just have to see the trailer for Love in the Time of Cholera.
Atonement was shown at a special screening in Richmond.
Stephen G, yeah but just watch Cotillard get a nom anyway (just to spite me!)...
Still can't get over this Atonement teaser - it's so pretty.
