Makeup & Visual Effects: Very Golden

The year in advance Oscar Predictions have begun. (they'll be popping up all day for each category) Read and discuss right here. Think I'm spot on or way off?

The Golden Compass is, literallty, tech gold. I mean, how many past nominees and winners are in this?!

EDIT: I should have said *working* on this since the only Oscar winner IN it is Nicole Kidman, lmao.

Yeah, you know this year will be very competitive for visual effects when 300 doesn't even look likely. Obviously Pirates and Spiderman aren't missing (seriously... impossible), and I think you're right that Beowulf and Golden Compass are the best bets for the third slot. Tough to imagine either missing. Maybe Beowulf will be delayed?

Yeah, makeup is impossible to figure out, though both Golden films do look like strong contenders.

I think that last year, if the Academy was going to expand one category to include 5 nominees it should have been Visual Effects instead of Sound Editing. Almost every year recently has had at least 5 deserving nominees (of course, last year didn't but that must be seen as the exception).

Looking at the list of the films for this year Nathaniel has, I think its really time that this category gets 5 nominees.

Visual F/X = stacked

Any thoughts on the idea that, since "Pirates 3" is, to all intents and purposes, the second half of a two-part movie, the VFX members of the Academy may feel the film has 'already won one', and give it a pass so that another worthy effort can be recognized?

If they don't cut up Julie Taymor's Across The Universe, the visual effects could be in contention as well. It's possible.

I doubt At World's End will suffer from this kind of thinking, since it's essentially the Return of the King-like trilogy finale, and will probably make the most money of all three. It's still a trilogy, and if the first 2 were nominated, the 3rd should be, too.

It could easily lose the statue, however. In fact, both Spiderman and Pirates have already won this category, so maybe the third nominated film will win it?

I think you're all giving The Order of the Phoenix not enough possibility. The Golden Compass is sort of likely, but what if it flops? PIARTES!!!!!!! and 3 are almost locked, and even share characteristics that make it hard to imagine who will win. The first one lost to a Lord of the Rings film, and the second won did win, and it's the only Oscar the series has ever won. Right? Yup.

I personally don't see 300 being nominated. I mean, they snubbed Sky Captain and Sin City didn't even make the bakeoff (right?) so why should 300 be any different?

Also, Stuff like Bourne never makes it. To incorporated into the movie. As in, you don't NOTICE the SPECIAL EFFECTS IN BOLD.

Can I also make a suggestion/hint. Pirates 3 has many different cultures including asia represented so a costume design nod wouldn't surprise me at all.

my think with Pirates and costuming is maybe they just don't like Penny Rose? she does great work but doesn't get nominated.
