My predictions for the men who'll be walking Oscar's red carpet next February. If you're just joining us. Yes, I do this every year. I like to play crystal ball with my red carpet experience and I like to do it wayyyy before I should.
LEAD ACTOR
3 Oscar winners
1 double loser and...
1 wonderful newbie who held his own with last year's Oscar winner in this category
SUPP ACTOR
total guesswork. Supporting is so cloudy till we now more about the films.
The women are next and we're done. whew

I am dumbfounded that you have not even one male from I'm Not There. I am very positive on Bale or Ledger getting a nod. Maybe I'm just one of those who has more faith in that film.
i have plenty o faith in the film. from one of my very very very very (get the picture) favorite directors ever.
but i'm not sure about individual performances or how they'll shake out since so many people are playing the same role or aspects of the same role.
wasn't sure who to include and who to ignore. though Blanchett will obviously get praise because
a) she always does
and
b) she's the only actress
Maybe it's just me, but I honestly don't think "I'm not there" will be that good. Maybe it's the topic , but who knows.
It just seems like people are hyping it up already that and "Charlie Wilson's War"
When are the women coming nat?!
I'm expecting some Kidman, Knightly, and Blanchett love!
I had enough faith to predict I'm Not There for best picture, and I didn't predict any men either. Though I considered many of them, especially Ledger who seems like a PERFECT choice to play Dylan.
I DID end up predicting Blanchett, for the reasons Nat says. So that's something.
I forgot about Michael Clayton and definitely underestimated Atonement in my predictions, though, so we'll see.
I also maybe stupidly predicted Daniels for The Lookout since it's getting all this praise, thinking it might become a contender at year's end. Couldn't think of anyone else to predict here. But Wilkinson and Del Toro are obviously possibilities.
I have a lot of faith, though, in Ruffalo and Dano (who I love, so good!) and also in Bosco to some extent, just based on the nature of the role.
What about Sacha Baron Cohen in Support as Pirelli for Sweeney Todd?
They probably came close to nominating him last year for Borat, and he gets to be funny (which they may like even if they don't like the film). And Judge Turpin is such a loathsome character.
And yes, people probably WOULD complain if Russell or Denzel were supporting, or else just not dare to place them there... as if it's any less fraudulent for big stars to be supporting actors. That is sad.
I'm Not There is my most anticipated film - I know this is gonna be great - it is a Todd Haynes film!!!!! Ledger has to be great in this - he could get a nom - especially to compensate him for being passed over for Brokeback - but Blanchett allegedly has the most screen time -
I also think - Clive Owen could go lead -
Since The Good German - I have no faith in Clooney as an actor - he was downright AWFUL - and with Tom Wilkinson and Tilda Swinton - two real top notch actors in the film - they could expose Clooneys limitations -
Cate
Bosco. Dano. Del Toro. Ruffalo.
You gotta find a fifth guy whose name ends with O. Al Pacino in Ocean's Thirteen? Robert De Niro in Stardust? John Turturro in Margot at the Wedding? Sadly, Vincent Gallo has no supporting roles this year.
Wilkinson may deserve it, but I'm digging the novelty.
lol, Nathaniel, at first I thought you forgot that "Love in the time of cholera" was out on 2007, and then I saw you had Bardem as "alternate" at lead... but you overlook its most important chances (Picture, Director, Adapted Screenplay, Costume...) totally. In my honest opinion, having read the book, THIS is the Oscar project of the year (above Golden Age which is a sequel anyways from a director that flopped big time with The Four Feathers)... So far, I think the Oscar is between Love and American Gangster... the rest still are behind, even thought Love still can disappoint big time (as Geisha or The Shipping News did).
Alot of people are under estimating Love in the Time of Cholera. Javier Bardem is one of the finest actors workng today and I am shocked you haven't included him as Best Actor for this movie or Best Supporting Actor for No Country For Old Men.
The problem with Love in the Time of Cholera is that it's an even harder book to adapt then Atonement. It's not as if Mike Newell is all that great a director either - if you're gonna use Four Feathers to bring down Kapur, I raise you a Mona Lisa Smile.
I'm looking forward to it, just to see if they get it right.
I'd predicted Del Toro for lead and not supporting. I figured there's no other male with a big role in the movie so it'd be easier to shove him into lead.
well for any Mona Lisa Smile that could be raised, a Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, which was a success at b.o. and reviews could also be mentioned... and it's his last movie, isn't it? Newell also got a BP nom without a BD nom, as Khapur had... but Khapur's track success, given his limited filmography - Hollywood wise - ain't good news. The biggest handicap Golden Age has is... ELIZABETH. It ain't better than the original, forget about it, it'll be deemed as "unworthy".
