P.S. I Don't Believe This

This still from P.S. I Love You is disturbing me. And it's not because I've seen the trailer which promises to deliver a film containing the most awkward star turn yet from my arch nemesis H.S. If the trailer is any indication she shouldn't be allowed within 500 yards of a pratfall or anything resembling romantic comedy

But the still bugs because the casting is alarming. In what universe are these three women friends? I have trouble imagining that the frequently combusting eroticism of Gina Gershon, the quirky but bitter comedy of Lisa Kudrow and the straight faced self regard of Hilary Swank can coexist peacefully within the same film, let alone play all bosom-buddy like.

Anyone else doing a double take trying to imagine it?

The closer we get to this movies release the more I am certain that the world is coming to an end. You can find me in Times Square unshaven, ripe smelling and wearing an apocalyptic sandwich board...

Oh God, is this an 'Add-the-caption' activity? Please make it so.
"In what universe are these three women friends?" Haha! LOVE it.

I don't need to SEE that!

And that's my The Comeback quote for the day

Hilary Swank has already top-lined two of the three highest grossing female-driven films this year ... the end is here!

GG: This is a decree from Homeland Security stating that Hilary has 48 hours to flee the country and stop making films or face terrorism charges.
HS: (Blank Stare)
LK: Does it say anything about where my agent went?

hahahahahahaha... love that Vince.
specially the LK line...

all of these actresses probably would like to be seen outside of their respective "sexy/trashy", "sitcom actress" and "i'm a serious actress" stereotypes.

everyone deserves to stretch. even the swank.

I'm with anon. The Gershon/Kudrow situation actually increases the likelihood that I'll enjoy the film. So I'm going with it.

I saw this trailer during "Michael Clayton" and I was horrified at how awful it looked. The only other time I audibly groaned during a trailer was for the "Bratz: The Movie".

You hate the trailer by default. Swank is fine in it. She won't try to blow the limits of overacting like that hammy Annette Benning would. She is just playing it cool. She may not deserve 2 Oscars but she was quite good in MDB, and definitely better than your hysterical muse. Get over it.

i'm not actually offended by the friendship grouping (i like to think i have a pretty diverse group of friends), and the trailer didn't bother me either. it looks diverting, at least. the only problem i have with swank's comedy (that i can derive from a 2 minute trailer) is that fall during karaoke. pretty cringe-inducing.

I'm more offended by that hat. Yikes!

Also, I would not know that was Gina Gershon if you hadn't have said so. She looks so... domestic. Ugh.

"Today the part of Mercedes Ruehl will be played by Gina Gershon..."

YES! Mercedes Ruehl!

don't get me wrong Nick and Anon --Gina & Lisa are the only things that could get me into the theater for this.

and i'm not talking about typecasting so much as screen persona (which unfortunately leads to typecasting, but all things have dark sides)

Even in her dramatic work Lisa's bitter comedy informs it (think Happy Endings) and even in small roles Gina Gershon always reads like a sexual being --at least to me... or does she just make me horny due to the Showgirls obsession?

cal are you suggesting that HS is a better actor than Michelle Pfreaking Pfeiffer? [gag] Get yo eyes checked man --or maybe i don't know what 'hysterical muse' refers to.

anyway i don't hate the trailer by default: I like Richard LaGravanese and Gerard Butler usually. love Gina & Lisa always. So, nope. I didn't actually WANT to be horrifed by it ;) I think it's the karaoke pratfall that sent shivers through me

I can't believe I am endangering myself like this, but I'm sure that anon means.... The Bening. Protect me from her wrath.

The pratfall is tricky. Swank does seem like a problem in this material, but if it's any consolation, I don't expect her to be scoring these gigs all that much longer.

I'm more worried about Julia Roberts in that Charlie Wilson's War trailer. And actually, I'm more worried about that whole trailer. On the plus side, my life has been amazing since Across the Universe finally opened and I didn't have to watch that trailer before EVERYTHING.

No, Pfeiffer is great (better actress than Swank, but don't have a Boys Don't Cry performance). I mean Bening.

you know nat, gerald buttler is wearing only boxers in one scene, even my mom wants to see it. Will u? I won´t, cause Skank is too odd for my taste

Interesting call on Mercedes Ruehl, but something about Gina's coat makes me think Nia Vardalos.

Gershon and Kudrow have looked better. Swank... probably hasn't.

That's Gina Gershon? I thought Nia Vardalos had lost a lot of weight.

Good for Gina for playing against type and stretching herself, but it looks to me like they had to ugly her up to make HS look nominally pretty by comparison.

Uglied-up or no, I would still expect Gina to wipe the floor with everyone else in sight simply by walking into the room (but then again I still have fond memories of "Bound" - I never imagined anyone that feminine could play such a superbly convincing soft butch. Yow.)

That photo of Hilary Swank! She looks like a strange meld of Judy Garland in "Meet Me in St.Louis" and Raquel Welch in "Fathom". Not a mix I'm comfortable with.
