When I think of The Golden Globes my mind's eye often dives into Madonna's gargantuan gorgeous new mom cleavage when she won for Evita. The Globes are crazy, sucking on the teat of celebrity so shamelessly that I can't judge them for it so much as stick a kazoo in my mouth and party along. Madonna winning the top prize for Evita. That would never happen at the Oscars. But the Globes didn't care, god bless. Not that Frances McDormand didn't deserve it for Fargo mind, but my point --jumping forward a decade to 2007-- at least the HFPA doesn't always try to predict the Oscars like many of the other Academy-focused groups.The Hollywood Foreign Press Association don't get a lot of respect and they make terrible errors (usually involving aforementioned celebrity ass-kissing --Cameron Diaz for Gangs of New York still haunts me. One of the most idiotic dull nominations ever and it cost Michelle Pfeiffer needed momentum. Aaaaargh) but, then again, point me towards the awards group that doesn't.
MY PREDICTIONS
I'm opting for some surprises (see supporting) because I'd die of boredom if I didn't.
Questions: Who do you think is getting nominated tomorrow morning at the crack of dawn? Which film is sure to get a boost? Which film or actor will be cursing the HFPA for killing off their Oscar momentum?

On another note, I really wish this was the year everyone just went with past winners for Best Actress. Weird, but I prefer Berry and Kidman to Cotillard and Page.

You're right; that Comedy Actress is a killer field. Praying for Russell, just as much as I know you're not (!), but... I honestly can't see them NOT nominating Katharine Heigl. She's in the mix. No matter who they have to screw over.

P.S. Adam - complete agreement that Bonham Carter has deserved more - even as a Judi Dench fiend, I'm convinced Bonham Carter should have won for 1997. However, I just can't get overly excited about her in Sweeney. The nepotistic nature of the casting leaves a sour taste in the mouth, particularly when this was a prime opportunity to give the role to someone we'd all be confident could deliver the goods.

I think Ruby Dee and Saoirse Ronan are the only potential spoilers in Supporting Actress, though I think your field looks really plausible.
If the Globes toss any Supporting Actor love to Sweeney, I could see it going just as easily to Sacha Baron Cohen.
Good list, but I can easily see a few things that might change.
* I suspect There Will Be Blood will be snubbed for BP, but Anderson will get the Best Director nom along with Julian Schnabel (whose film will also be shut out). Expect American Gangster to make an unwanted 11th hour comeback. Heck, The Great Debators might even make it on the list.
* Denzel will get a nomination, but for his work in The Great Debators, not this. Nicole Kidman will slog her way into the contender list with her Margot performance.
* I am expecting a Charlie Wilson shut-out. Nobody likes that movie, from what I hear. The Kite Runner, meanwhile, may surprise a few people.
* There really isn't any possibility of John Travolta getting a nomination... is there?
* The Kite Runner will be nominated as a foreign language film, and will probably win too. Stupid Golden Globes.
Just a hunch, but I think "American Gangster" gets left at the altar for good tomorrow morning, with zero nominations. That would be the knockout blow, I suspect, for its chances with the Academy.
Give Adam and Rob a ballot! Let's get Helena Bonham-Carter nominated before it's too late!

Kidman gets the best reviews of her career since Dogville with a character that shocks and brings out intense reaction from people but she is not in the race. If Meryl had played Margot exactly the way Kidman played her, she would be ahead of the race.
And then with TGC, still nothing. It can only happen to you, Nicole.

Other than Johnny Depp, the best actor in ST was a somewhat minor character - Beadle, assistant to the judge. I would love to see him get some recognition. However, I doubt if he will. Comparing the original show to the movie - I found Mrs. Lovett (Bonham-Carter) to be a total bore compared to the feisty / dolty Angela Lansbury. Bonham Carter didn't do it for me.

Into the Wild snags pic, Penn, Holbrook and Keener. Leslie Mann and Knocked Up find spots. And here's me out on a massive limb: Brad Pitt sneaks in for Jess James.
Alas my ability to predict is always skewed by my cynisism toward the process. HFPA and their starphukking.

I've actually predicted a Brad Pitt sneak attack as well (with Affleck, unfortunately, in supporting). I wonder if the Globes can resist the glam factor in nominating both of the Jolie-Pitts. But that might be wishful thinking, since both of them could make my own year-end list (Jolie is iffy, at either 4 or 5 right now, and I've yet to see Atonement, Juno, or Sweeney Todd).
I'm also predicting (hoping for?) an American Gangster shutout, and for Charlie Wilson to find its only nomination in the form of Tom Hanks.
God, I hope I'm right then about Charlie Wilson -- because that movie is a pile.
And I really hope YOU'RE wrong about John Travolta.
And I hope everyone here is right about that darn American Gangster shut-out... though I sincerely doubt it. Shout out to all the actressexuals out there: this week's issue (Dec 7-13) of SCREEN INTERNATIONAL is an Actress special with loads of gorgeous FYC ads from this season's main players and nice spotlight feature on the ten women most likely to get near Oscar (and a little sidebar on the supporting women too). Nice issue to keep.

Jose, I have MUCH love to Michael Cera. I see him as a young Jim Carrey in terms of comedic abilities, not necessarily performance style.
If he got a nod for Superbad I'd be happy, though I don't think he truly deserves one (even though he's terrific in it). I think it be unfair to single him out over Jonah Hill.
Maybe a supporting nod (highly unlikely) for Juno or perhaps a SAG nod for Superbad ensemble. That was a stellar young cast.
Maybe even a breakout for him at this years Film Bitch...?

I'm a bit of a Cotillard supporter myself. I wasn't wowed, but I wasn't unimpressed, either. I do prefer her performance to Christie's although only just barely, but I guess it's irrelevant since neither will be touching my own list. Am I the only one who's all about Linney, in either of her performances, this year (except for certain days when I'm all about Wei, but you get the point)?
