Supporting Actor 2007, Mine

Pssst. For those tuning in regularly, I apologize. I made a mistake and had somebody on two separate lists --I'm so disorganized! So the earlier award ("Body of Work" has been altered) and one of them bumped up to this list here.

If there's one acting Oscar that's already locked up, it's probably got the name "Javier Bardem" engraved on it. His demonic "Anton Chigurh" in No Country For Old Men will also be found on my list of best supporting players this year. It's the only arguably lead role I've included (I'm a stickler for category integrity) because there are ways to interpret the movie that place this ghost solidly in support. So I won't buck that particular trend. For the other nominees, I've included two lonely old men (they're so moving, I had to have both), one batshit crazy person, and one exasperated and hard working counter-terrorist.

Read the list and then share your five "If I had an Oscar ballot" choices in the comments. Which men supported their films in a way that really got to you last year?

I was pretty surprised you included Hal Holbrook. I certainly didn't expect him here. I thought you'd go for Bardem, Von Sydow, Ivanov, Wilkinson and Marsden. I had Khan as a spoiler. :P Keep surprising me...

Sadly, my if I had a ballot can't be completed since I live in Mexico and we get Oct-Dec films Jan to March (e.g. getting ATonement in March, TWBB in February and NCFOM in January). But so far the supporting actors I think did a good job are:

1. Casey Affleck - Jesse James (yeah...I know he's on screen more than Pitt - I suck)
2. James Marsden - Enchanted
3. Joe Anderson - Across the Universe
4. Ben Foster - 3:10 to Yuma
5. Vlad Ivanov - 4 Months...
6. Tom Wilkinson - Michael Clayton

Though, the only ones that have any chance of staying in my Top 6 after I see the 50 films I've got left to see (:P) are Affleck, Marsden, Anderson.

Let it never be said that this blogger hates Cate Blanchett. He's clearly struggled with her omnipresence the whole year, but does not deny her the Supporting Actress nomination despite that. My hat off to you - a lesser man would not have agreed.

I also praise your inclusion of Irfan Kahn, whose two performances in A MIGHTY HEART and THE NAMESAKE really won me over too.

Who would I have voted for?

SUPPORTING ACTRESS
- Kelly MacDonald - No Country for Old Men
- Ah-sung Ko - The Host (she's the little girl captured by the monster)
- Charlotte Gainsbourg - I'm Not There and The Science of Sleep
- Cate Blanchett - I'm Not There
- Saorsie Ronan - Atonement

SUPPORTING ACTOR
- Javier Javier Javier
- Hie-bong Byeon - The Host (the grandfather of the captured little girl)
- Irfan Kahn - A Mighty Heart and The Namesake
- Tommy Lee Jones - No Country
- Sam Rockwell - Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
- John Carroll Lynch (as Arthur Leigh Allen) from Zodiac
- Michael Lonsdale from An Old Mistress

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly just opened here and I've yet to see it, so I can't make out my ballot not having seen my favorite actor like... OMG... ever!

But Wilkinson, Holbrook, Bardem, are up there now. Paul Schneider in Lars (for the reasons you mentioned) and Nathan Fillion has some surprising comedic flair in Waitress.

My list goes:

Javier Bardem - NCFOM
Alan Rickman - Sweeney Todd
Max Von Sydow - TDBAB
Irfan Khan - A Mighty Heart/The Namesake
Wang Lee-Hom - Lust, Caution.

I'm not sure whether I want to give the win to Bardem, though. It seems a bit going with the crowd; but I like to think my other choices are being a bit wider than some.

my top 5 are in no particular order

1 - javier bardem - no country for old men - his smile to woody h priceless
2- stephen graham - this is england you got to se e this nat your fb awards would be so different
3 - albert finney - before the devil knows you're dead his line reading of " i love you" to his wife in the hospital bed
4 - james marsden - enchanted - 116th and broadway and the goofy look on his face
5 - tom wilkinson - michael clayton - his rant in jail.

A great list... especially pleased to see Holbrook, and Marsden as a semi-finalist (even if he should have made the final five!).

I repeat my disclaimer of still having lots to see... although I saw No Country just yesterday so Kelly MacDonald would bump out Vicky McClure on the list I gave the other day. As for supporting actor, as of now I'd pick Javier Bardem, Hal Holbrook, James Marsden (for Enchanted- although the pic of Hairspray you used makes me smile without fail just remembering how hilariously goofy he was), Paul Schneider (for Jesse James), and Tommy Lee Jones (for No Country).

Casey Affleck is- and I assume you're saying too, Nat!- a lead so he's not on this list.

Holy shit… my jaw hit the floor.

Hal Holbrook... Max von Sydrow… Irfan Khan?

I guess my shock at seeing the old timers is because I’d thought you’d place them in the limited/ cameo category. And I wasn’t sure if you thought Wilkinson over did it with the scenery-chewing so… with the exception of Bardem I was genuinely surprised.

And damn. I was almost positive Downey Jr would make it.

My only real qualm is the absence of Tommy Lee Jones whose haunted face and final words were just too perfect in NO COUNTRY. Oh, and I’m not sure about Greenwood over both new comer Marcus Carl Franklin who turned in a fine performance and Heath Ledger who worked beautifully opposite Gainsbourg to render quite a stinging portrait of marital collapse.

Anyway, I LOVE your descriptions of each performance (particularly Bardem’s)- they’re always so rich and insightful. Can't wait for more! :)

You skipped 2 of my favourites - Vlad Ivanov (restrained, startling, perfectly calibrated monster, but we've been over this), and I'm not sure if you got to see Superbad, but one kid called Christopher Mintz-Plasse was sensational in it - very convincing and unaffected, turning the sex-starved nerd stereotype into a freakishly human-like character.

Yeah, really lovely list. Have yet to see Diving Bell so can't comment on Von Sydow, but it sounds like a tiny gem of a performance. And Irrfan Khan was close to making my final 5. And I know Affleck will be cited somewhere in your Actor list (but where? It's so crowded over there!).

Surprised that neither Heath Ledger or Albert Finney made your semi-finalists, thought they'd be right up your street.com. Also thought you might champion Homayoun Ershadi - who is my most off-consensus pick of the year - I'm still so shocked no-one is singling out this performance! It's so Oscarbait in that noble father/schoolteacher kind of way (in spite of its foreignness). Or it could be that noble doesn't get Oscars for men anymore, the same way that tits out no longer means gold for the ladies? Or am I just misjudging the performance?

My ballot (so far):

Casey Affleck - The Assasination...
Javier Bardem - No Country for Old Men
Homayoun Ershadi - The Kite Runner
Hal Holbrook - Into the Wild
Tom Wilkinson - Michael Clayton

...with Holbrook winning hands down, Ershadi getting silver and Bardem for the bronze.

I predict Von Sydow as your winner, Bardem for your silver and Khan to take bronze.

I'd Nominate:

JAVIER BARDEM in No Country For Old Men
PAUL DANO in There Will Be Blood
TOMMY LEE JONES in No Country For Old Men
IRFAN KAHN in The Namesake
TOM WILKINSON in Michael Clayton

...with Javier Bardem definitly winning the award. He was so amazing. I sadly haven't seen Into the Wild or The Diving Bell and the Butterfly yet, though I'm sure Hal Holbrook and Max Von Sydow were excellent. I've always liked Max Von Sydow's work.

I do not sell my paintings by the yard!

Ehhhh not loving the list. My ballot would go:

BEST S. ACTOR
01. James Marsden, Enchanted

03. Woody Harrelson, No Country For Old Men
04. Nick Frost, Hot Fuzz
05. Heath ledger, I’m Not There.

Another great list.

My own: Hal Holbrook is the winner, then:

Javier Bardem
Paul Rudd
Max von Sydow

And another Atonement category conundrum: If McAvoy is lead, Marsden's in there. If support: it's McAvoy

No Casey Affleck?

Or do you consider him a lead?
