February 29th's scare me. I feel as if I'm existing in a void. Like today doesn't exist. We've wandered into the underworld! Death! Mayhem! Gingivitis!
That ending was incredible. Just when it seemed like everything was wrapped up in a neat little package...came this "wtf?" moment that made sense and yet didn't, but it added yet another layer to that character and to the performance.
I think in some ways the ending to Brokeback is similar in effect. Lee's endings (of his films I have seen) don't make you feel the old-fashioned "all's right with the world" catharsis (since he's not a Westerner (European/American), so the tradition he is drawing on are, I assume, entirely different.) They are weighted with such emotion down to the very last image that you tend to walk out reeling, still trying to process what has just occured before you. I know of no filmmaker who is his superior in that regard.

Haha. I don't know why, but that made me laugh out loud. I know it's not funny, but I don't know.
Happy Leap Year, Nathaniel!
