Renée-bashing is fun :-))

Poor Renée,

I saw her on Regis and Kelly the other day and it was so funny to see Anderson Cooper's listening to her, thinking : "Why are you squinting that much ? Why don't you eat a damn sandwich ?"

v v funny she got the voice and body just right why has renee suddenly become a pariah in 202 she was well liked do u think winning an undeserved oscar killed her career.

by which i mean Tracey.

Tracey is the most unappreciated actor on this earth. Her talent is truly amazing.

Tracey Ullman is a goddess. As good as she is in this, there's other characters on her new show that are even better. Her Arianna Huffington, Campbell Brown, and Dina Lohan are insanely great too. I won't get on the Renee bashing train though. She's great in some earlier stuff, and I've never minded her Oscar win.

God Renee-bashing is getting lame.

Can we move on, please ?

Hilarious!

And no one is forcing you to read it, daemon.

What exactly has Zellweger done to warrant vile and cruel comments from so many people? (particularly on Awardsdaily and the backstage)

it's really par for the course for celebrities to have backlashes.

I'm always surprised when people are surprised.

so many celebrity-centric blogs and sites are nothign but viciousness actually. I can't read them. I just like looking at the pictures but i hate reading about how horrible everyone thinks everyone is.

SO NEGATIVE.

but i think tracey ullman is really funny and you have to admit that she does a pretty brill job of catching some of Renée's tics here.

(love the hand opening. Hee)

Hm... what has Renee done to earn these comments? Well, where does one begin? Is it merely because of aesthetics (i.e.: the squinty eyes and lemon-sucking pursed lips)?

No, of course not. Making fun of someone for their looks is one thing (not cool), but using someone's looks to taunt them when they suck for other reasons, that's another (totally cool).

What I think caused the RZ turnaround (at least on my part) was her self-imposed transformation from the lovable, Texas-charm-having, sweet gal who thrived in comedies like "Nurse Betty," "Down with Love" and "Bridget Jones" into the Meryl-Streep-wannabe who got one Oscar nomination (for a romantic comedy, mind you) and suddenly wants to be "classy"/pretentious and be taken "seriously" in films like "Cold Mountain" and gives extremely cold, detached interviews.

I'm sorry, but she's not only changed as an actress (her likability, sincerity and capability of inhabiting a character have all but depleted), but as a personality (now she's all forced smiles and elitist waves). She's lost what once made her a likeable celebrity, and lost sight of her capabilities/strengths as an actress. And it would seem (considering her dismal turns in "Leatherheads" and "Bee Movie") that even trying to go back to what she used to be good at, it's just not possible to undo what's been done.

I'm sorry to ramble, and sorry if I didn't adequetely encompass peoples' problems with her, but that's just my take.

Anon. 12:00, thanks for the link - I'd forgotten how much I love French and Saunders. (God bless YouTube.) Their Thelma and Louise parody is equally brilliant, perhaps more so:

Even better is their "making of Titanic spoof" - I nearly choked to death laughing:

No it's not. It's as sleazy and dickish for you to do one as it is to do the other.

Before her Oscar for her prentensous role in "Cold Mountain" I love her especially in comedy roles because she was fantastic in Nurse Betty, Bridget Jones's diary, Down with Love and Chicago, and she has a girl next door charm and charisma who need to love that texan girl. But after her Oscar she lost a lot of her charming and she became cold and prentensous (Like a diva) and her opcions wasn't very right. I think she lost her direction...

Really, I don't think Renee in and of herself is important in this skit - you could insert any number of A-list divas there: Kidman, Roberts, etc etc. The target is really the sort of pretentious self-importance and inability to see the absudity of one's public image that Rob and others have commented on here that seems to infect certain performers/celebrities once they reach a certain level of fame; and the assumption that the "star persona" alone is enough to justify vanity projects or fill seats in the theaters.

And this skit left me a little "meh", btw - milking a too-thin joke for too far long. (not unlike Miss Z's career, mayhaps?)

are you talking about the cold mountain skit? because the tracey ullman thing here is SHORT.

Anonymous said...

Actually Nat, I was talking about Tracy's skit - I know it's a short skit but it seemed longer to me than it really was. The point about the squint had already been made, and there was nothing in particular added to it.

Don't get me wrong - I love Tracy, and I REMEMBER (unlike most of the world) when the Simpsons were just crudely-drawn bits separating the skits of Tracy's variety show. (Really, if Matt What's-his-name does fork over even a small portion of his profits to her to thank her for launching his characters on an unsuspecting world, then that just isn't right.)

I actually find all this extremely ignorant, racist and offensive. Renée is of part Saami decent, the Saami being an indigenous people of northern Scandinavia. Their eyelids do tend to be shorter, making their eyes appear "squinted". Would Tracey or anyone here make fun of Gong Li for "squinty eyes"? No, because it's racist. So is this. I find it really very objectionable.
