mmmmm... Paul Newman is so HOT!
Any closeup of Paul Newman from "back in the day" is the greatest closeup in the history of cinema.
Only beaten by any closeup on James Dean (excluding the last hour of Giant, obviously).

sorry i disagree the best close up is glenn close in dangerous liasons,the end scene,why oh why didn't she win the oscar!!!!!

I'd still have to go with Orson Welles' first appearance in The Third Man.

Yeah, Welles's closeup in The Third Man is the best closeup in cinematic history. Harry Lime's grin is burned into my corneas.
hence the "arguably" ha ha. But omg Hud is great. I'm so horrified that it missed a BP nomination in its year.
i still can't get over the way Paul Newman's eyes read so blue even in black and white. crazy striking handsome
The most handsome man who ever lived!
What's worse than Hud's BP snub is the fact that it took Newman until 86 to win an Oscar, and for a performance that wasn't all that memorable. By my count, he should have at least won for Cool Hand Luke (my favorite), Hud, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, or The Verdict (if it were up to me, I'd give him all 4, but...he's my favorite actor, so I'm biased ;) )

And let's not forget the greatest movie that seemed to be nothing but closeups: The Passion of Joan of Arc (sic) by Theodor Dreyer.
Or maybe a montage of Sergio Leone standoffs.
As if I didn't already love you enough, this is the icing on our love cake. LOL. His close-ups in "Long Hot Summer" are also swoon-worthy.
My favourite close-up? Elizabeth Taylor. Montgomery Clift. "A Place in the Sun"
