Sex & the City (The Movie) is exactly how I imagined it and ripe for audience participation. The crowd I saw it with were lively (Miranda kept getting the biggest cheers). When it comes to Sarah Jessica Parker, I have to give her mad props. She actually pulled off the depression thing well. .(Jennifer Hudson's Oscar for Dreamgirls should be left alone. She's a nice screen presence and did her best with a wafer-thin character)
Sex and the City (The Movie) is pretty fun and easy to understand for someone like me who wasn't seen a single episode. When it comes to Sarah Jessica Parker, I felt that she did her thing. This was no The Family Stone, where she gave her best performance, but her Carrie was a hell of a good time. (Jennifer Hudson's Oscar for Dreamgirls was richly deserved. And she proved in this film that it wasn't a fluke. She added more characterization and pizzazz to her Louise from St. Louis than the script asked of her.)
Sex & the City (The Movie) is exactly what I wanted. When it comes to Sarah Jessica Parker, I will always think of her as the witch in "Hocus Pocus". (Jennifer Hudson's Oscar for "Dreamgirls" was deserved but in hindsight we always think the winner should have been someone else.
Sex and the city is a film I have no desire to watch. When it comes to Sarah Jessica Parker, I wish people would give her a break : so what, she's no Monica Bellucci, is that her fault ? People are so mean when it comes to women's looks, I mean there are a lot of not so attractive MALE actors, even famous ones, and yet do people go on and on about their looks ? Women who are quick to label SJP as ugly should not forget that there's a slight chance that their daughters end up even more unattractive and way fatter than her lol (Jennifer Hudson's Oscar for Dreamgirls was the ultimate proof the Academy is a fluke. But we already knew that.)
Sex & the City (The Movie) is Jeffrey Wells' worst nightmare, and its virtriolic reception amongst male journalists has made me very wary of the rampant misogyny still present in film criticism. I'm actually thinking of dropping many of my oft-visited film blogs because this film has revealed the various prejudices of the writers. When it comes to Sarah Jessica Parker, I could take her or leave her, though I am, again, supremely troubled by all the "horse-faced nothing-head" insinuations filling the pages of mainstream reviews, and really wish this anti-woman agenda would just disappear. (Jennifer Hudson's Oscar for Dreamgirls doesn't exactly give me nightmares, since I've never seen Dreamgirls and have no room to judge.)
is... still unseeen by me. I had tickets to today's 11 am show and slept until just now. I hate myself!
I... am an unrepentant fan. She's one of our best comic actresses and has been for a long long time. People who think she's ugly are annoying. She's sexy as hell with a slamming body and the ability to wear almost anything rather than let it wear her (not a common ability)
... neither her nor there when it comes to this movie. I don't know why i asked.
I AM SO MAD AT MYSELF FOR SLEEPING IN. (but to be fair it was a late late late night and then i got locked out of my apartment. horrors.
Sex & the City (The Movie) is unapologetic in being absolutely what it is -- a sweet, silly, funny, moving, uneven reencounter with some beloved characters . When it comes to Sarah Jessica Parker, I think she deserves a LOT more credit than she gets -- in terms of brains, beauty and business savvy. She also holds the human center of this elaborate piece with ease, no simple task. (Jennifer Hudson's Oscar for Dreamgirls remains a mystery to me.)
Sex & the City (The Movie) is exactly what I was looking for, and provides me with hope for more mainstream films featuring women. I love that it's going to make $70 million for its opening weekend, I love the critical derision from male critics, and I adore the fact that it shows up the snobs who think women have abandoned the cinema. When it comes to Sarah Jessica Parker, I fall under her squeaky charm. (Jennifer Hudson's Oscar for Dreamgirls is slightly undeserved.)
"Sex & the City (The Movie)" is overly hyped, along with being the most idiotic idea/reason to make a film.
When it comes to Sarah Jessica Parker, I think she looks like a foot freshly removed from a sweaty gym sock.
(Jennifer Hudson's Oscar for "Dreamgirls" was a sin against nature.)
Sex & the City (The Movie) is not as classy or witty as the series, but still fabulous. When it comes to Sarah Jessica Parker, I think she's one of the most underrated sexy women in Hollywood (I'm talking to you, you brainless Maxim editors). And did I mention she can wear ANYTHING? Unbelievable - especially on the big screen. But what was with the studded, dog collar-esque belt that shows up with over 7 outfits. Was Patricia Field attempting to make Ms. Bradshaw a bit goth to match her temporary depression? Of course she wears it well, but 7 outfits?!? (Jennifer Hudson's Oscar for Dreamgirls got her an underdeveloped role in what will be one of the most successful female-driven blockbusters of all time).
totally fun, if uneven, and unfairly attacked by male critics; think she's adorable; is something we all need to get over, like Crash or Titanic or Shakespeare in Love winning.
Sex & the City (The Movie) is a movie that will please the fans of the show. When it comes to Sarah Jessica Parker, I think that she will never have a character like Carrie Bradshaw again. (Jennifer Hudson's Oscar for Dreamgirls was a fair accomplishment).
Sex & the City (The Movie) is a film about women, and also a film hated by many critics. Correlation doesn't imply causation, though, so this doesn't necessarily mean it's hated because it's about women, you know. Unless all its haters are male/dissed The Hours/loved Wild Hogs/etc., the accusations of misogyny seem a bit unfounded.
When it comes to Sarah Jessica Parker, I do find her ugly, and wish nobody made me feel I am an evil person because of this. Make no mistake, I believe it's the first time I've ever commented on her looks (not just on this blog, not just on the Internet, but EVER), so it's not like I am on any kind of crusade against her, but I reserve the right to have my own taste in women.
(Jennifer Hudson's Oscar for Dreamgirls is something I'd rather not talk about, since this comment has enough of my bitching as is.) :P
I'm going to be the one to piss all over the parade. I legitimately loved the show, but found the movie to be an under-written/over-written mess. I won't say it wasn't fun, but in my case it was for all the wrong reasons. When I accidentally laughed out loud during two of the film's most "emotional" scenes I felt a little bad, but only a little.
Sex and the City is not a film I will be commenting on at all, because apparently, vocalizing a negative opinion in conjunction with having a set of male genitals would make me a rampant, prejudiced, hateful misogynist.
When it comes to Sarah Jessica Parker, I neither like or dislike her, and I don't see how the opinions of Maxim or a bunch of tabloid "journalists" should ever account for anything, as long as she still gets starring roles in major Hollywood films (which she does).
Jennifer Hudson's Oscar for Dreamgirls was not what I would have hoped for, but neither is it the biggest travesty to have occured during an Oscar ceremony.
Sex & the City (The Movie) is more enjoyable than I thought it would be, and a box office hit, but still completely unnecessary after its HBO finale.
When it comes to Sarah Jessica Parker, let's just say that I was the only one in the audience to openly applaud when the others told her to eat something. She's not ugly because of what God gave her, but because of what she did with it. And she (the actress, not just the character) dresses like a moron.
(Jennifer Hudson's Oscar for Dreamgirls ties her with such white luminaries as, say, Mira Sorvino and Phil Collins. So what's your point, haters?)
Sex & the City (The Movie) is one of the worst movies I've ever seen (and I loved the series!). When it comes to Sarah Jessica Parker, I think she deserves something better than this idiotic parade of stereotypes, silliness and unacceptable characters development..(Jennifer Hudson's Oscar for Dreamgirls is something I can't express opinions about since I haven't seen the movie yet: I can only say that in SatC she was nice)
...super fun -- a welcome chance to spend more time with four women i love.
...get all swoony.
Damn, I forgot that Jennifer Hudson is in Sex and the City! How much is she in it? (I didn't find her a good actress in Dreamgirls, but still I am tempted to watch everything she acts in. How does that figure?)
You see, what makes me mad is the fact that people seem to think that SJP is completely worthless as an actress JUST because she doesn't embody their idea of female beauty...
@ notluke
don't u think "ugly" is a bit strong ? I don't know on which planet you live, yours might be filled only with Paz Vegas and Halle Berrys, if so tell me where it is, is it Pluto ?
Are the guys from Entourage all uber-handsome ? Is Steve Buscemi incredibly handsome ? I guess not for the majority of viewers, does it mean he shouldn't act ?
Parker is good at what she'd playing : a spoiled, whiny, orgasm-loving Manhattan socialite who happens to be a control freak.
I imagine a lot of the people who think SJP is hideous either a) haven't left their computer since the Internet was invented or b) umm... no. that's about it. That's the only explanation for it.
Also, Mikadzuki, it's not that they (male critics, by and large) dislike the movie, it the vitriol with which they are attacking this movie when if it were four men in a male fantasy type film (like, say, Knocked Up or any other movie where the slob gets the hot chick for example) then it would be lauded as "raucious R-rated fun. These four boys are so naughty and crude that you just have to laugh!" but because it's about shoes and clothes and hats and bags it's not alright.
There are some guys out there saying they'd rather stab their eyes out than see this movie, when I bet they are the exact same guys positively masturbating at the thought of another Batman movie or a sequel to I Am Legend (wha...?)
I'd love to know what their girlfriends/wives (if they have one) would say if they knew they were being degraded online purely because they want to see S&tC (which is, repulsive as it sounds, actually happening out there).
@ alex Cypher:
Please. As I said, I reserve the right to my own taste. You seem to make an assumption that just because I don't like SJP, I must conform to some pre-determined Hollywood criteria for beauty. I have a mind of my own, thankyouverymuch. I also find Eva Mendes not attractive at all, for example, and Angelina Jolie rather overrated (she is good-looking but in a bit too "plastic" way for my taste).
I've never said she shouldn't act. People who say that are crazy and spiteful, but it's not like there is a star without crazy and spiteful deriders who will badmouth him/her for the silliest of reasons. (I am reminded of the blog post Nathaniel limked to a while ago, where some prick urged Nicole Kidman to retire because she stars in bizarre movies that fail at box office, or something like that.)
@ Glenn:
Please link to those critics, then. Otherwise we are talking theory, and your argument holds as much water as me saying that you didn't like I Am Legend only because you're a racist, and "i bet" it "would be lauded" by you if it starred a white actor.
Fair enough, glenn. But most of the vitriolic comments I've read seem to express more disgust at the movie's politics - the fetishization of wealth and expensive materialism - than anything else. When "guy flicks" (or whatever the accepted term is) go so far that they start revolving around roaring car engines or half-naked female bodies more than its characters they get torn apart too (the Fast and the Furious?). After all, if gender was the issue, wouldn't the critics tear apart every chick flick that comes out of Hollywood? This is hardly the first.
i can understand the attacks on materialism ... to a degree. But they seem like such a misguided target. Wealth and labels are not the SUBJECT or THEME of sex & the city... they're just part of the fantasy.
Sex & the City's world actually reminds me a smidgeon of the old Hollywood ideas about New York City where everyone was fabulously witty and did nothing but get dressed up to the nines and drink martinis every night (like say THE THIN MAN or any number of screwballs)
this is not reality. it's an idealized version of a certain type of New York. and i think it's worth noting that most of the women in S&TC acquired this fabulous fantasy wealth by the efforts of their own fabulous fantasy talent.
I guess I just feel that when people want to attack S&tC (perfectly fine if they have a point) they just don't try very hard and they fail to see ANY nuance in the show... which is sad because wealth and materialism are not the themes. The theme has always been friendship as family --and that's not shallow or spiritually empty. That's worth examining... even if the members of the family love labels and wear $500 shoes
Sex & the City (The Movie) is utterly unnecessary following a perfect season finale, though pleasant enough company for its hefty running time. When it comes to Sarah Jessica Parker, I think she's infectious fun and if Carrie is the role she'll have to live with for the rest of her life, then that's still a pretty satisfying epitaph. (Jennifer Hudson's Oscar for Dreamgirls was a vaguely loopy Academy anomoly, but I have to admit I enjoyed her performance of an underdeveloped character in this movie.)
Rob
Jennifer Hudson's Oscar for Dreamgirls was a great accomplishment of... category fraud. The character is a lead, not supporting.
Jennifer Hudson's Oscar for Dreamgirls is a good example of how you can sing yourself to winning an Oscar without having to act.
Marcelo - Brazil.
Sex & the City (The Movie) is exactly what I hoped it would be. I will not apologize for saying that I liked it and I am thrilled that they gave the fans what they wanted. Why are folks knocking the creators for doing this ? When it comes to Sarah Jessica Parker, I am always amazed by how humble she appears in interviews. Her appreciation for her fans and her kindness always comes across as genuine. (Jennifer Hudson's Oscar for Dreamgirls is unfortunate. Hudson is very talented ; great voice but she is not an actress. I am afraid that for the rest of her career people will expect another Oscar worthy performance everytime she is on screen just because she has that little gold man on her mantle. In her case is the Oscar a blessing or a curse?)
I thought the movie was terrific fun. So what if SJP is not beautiful in a traditional sense...neither was / is Streisand. SJP exudes confidence in her looks - wouldn't it be great if more females could do that? Re: Jennifer, she was pretty bad in SATC. Her Oscar: right place, right year, right song, right director, right race, right role....good for her. But, she's no actress. Jennifer has one, but Garbo, Stanwyck, Myra Loy, etc. don't
Sex & the City (The Movie) is a beautiful film for nostalgia. When it comes to Sarah Jessica Parker, I congratulate her on her performance and her business savvy on the success. (Jennifer Hudson's Oscar for Dreamgirls has nothing to do with the movie. People really need to leave her alone. If it's not that, it's her weight, or something worse...especially the people on imdb.com oscar buzz board. LEAVE HER ALONE ALREADY!)
LADYS AND GENTLEMEN THE WORST OSCAR WINNER IN HISTORY, EVEN MORE THAN MARISA TOMEI...JENNIFER HUDSON.
I STILL CANT BELIEVE BLANCHETT DIDNT WON FOR HER BRILLANT ROLE IN NOTES ON A SCANDAL. 23500000 MILLONS BETTER THAN THIS SCREAMGIRLS FATTY.
not cool to diss JHud's weight.
Jennifer Hudson is very pretty methinks.
my only issue is that i wish she'd focus on singing since she's generic as an actor and one of a kind as a singer.
but back to SJP. I would totally show up to the wedding. But damnit! Matthew Broderick already took her.
Sex & the City (The Movie) is a movie I have yet too see, starring Sarah Jessica Parker. When it comes to Sarah Jessica Parker, I kind of lose my focus as I can't seem to gaze away from her massive chin, which I think is cute.(Jennifer Hudson's Oscar for Dreamgirls is not)
Jennifer Hudson's Oscar has absolutely NOTHING to do with this movie, so I wish you guys would just leave her alone. She wasn't the one that voted for herself the Academy did. I don't see people constantly attacking Hilary Swank for Million Dollar Baby, You guy's put too much emphasis on the Oscars. So move the hell on. Besides I thought she was good as an UNDERDEVELOPED character in Sex & The City ( like we can really judge her acting in a 5 minute role). The movie was okay.
C+
~M~
The movie was underwhelming, SJP is talented and Jhud's Oscar was the right time at the right moment(I am sick of people bashing her).
Kelly The Great
Wait, '~M~'... you don't see people constantly attacking Hilary Swank for Million Dollar Baby? Are you, like, new to this site?
;o)
Rob
