I had a childhood fixation on "Speed Racer" growing up, so I have been wondering if it has any chance of living up to the memories. My past experience has informed me that manga ages badly. I am also discouraged by the reception so far (a reeking 35% on Metacritic as of this writing), so I cannot feel hopeful. Still, they had my $10.00 when the Wachowskis announced the project. So let's think good thoughts about positive surprises...
Magnolia. if only because I am currently listening to the amazing Aimee Mann. I wasn't a huge fan of the film when I first saw it, but it's grown on me. Still think it was a little too ambitious for its own good...
Contempt, because I'm writing a paper on Godard and that's where I'm up to. Except I'm being pretentious and calling it Le mepris in an effort to standardize all the titles in one language, some of which I gravitate to in English and some in French. Ask in an hour and hopefully I'll be to Pierrot le fou!
Dave, watch A Woman Under the Influence. It's so good!
I'm currently thinking about Never Been Kissed, which I just watched with my little sister. It's the first time I've watched it in about five years, but I still laugh at it. Drew Barrymore is so great at comedy.
I'm also thinking about All That Jazz. I'm finding school a little difficult at the moment, but lately I've been pulling an "It's showtime, folks!" routine every morning and it seems to be working. Sad, but true!
Clueless (Only becuase I'm writing a 10 page report on how the media represents Beverly Hills High School----Damn you 90210! We don't really have Valet parking at the front of our school!)
Little Children and Eternal Sunshine. I'm always talking/thinking about them.
"500 Days of Summer" which is being filmed now with Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (like them both). Yes, the announcement of the film did put it in my head, but now I'm getting emails from friends who also mention it, so I guess we're all keen.
I'm reading a book: The Battle for Bond, about the lawsuit against Ian Fleming for the rights to Thunderball, and what happened thereafter, and it's totally fascinating. Sounds like a book about a lawsuit would be dull, but it reads like an adventure tale and sometimes I laugh out loud. So, Thunderball.
I'm thinking about Gone Baby Gone, which I saw today. I liked it! Although even despite liking Amy Ryan very much I'm a big puzzled as to how she managed to fenagle so much awards attention.
A website I was on earlier had a link to some spoilers concerning Two Face which, despite not wanting to know any spoilers, I clicked on. And now I wish I didn't know them :(
Of course now with all this pressure, I can't think of any movies I've been thinking about. Maybe Close Encounters Of The Third Kind. I recently got it on Blu-Ray and am looking for the opportunity to watch it.
Thinking about "Howards End" and the scene where Margaret Schlegel is begging for permission for her sister to sleep in Wilcox's house...And also thinking about the days when Best Actress showed some discerning taste. Ah, Ms. Thompson. How I miss thee in the Oscar race...
Nat, it's not so much that Ryan wasn't good (I thought she was very good) but that the role was seemingly so small. Like it was one of those roles they give to someone like Martha Plimpton on Law & Order so they can be nominated for Best Performance by a Guest Actress in a Television Drama at the Emmys, ya know?
Ballad of a Soldier. Someone just assigned me to write a review of it. And Tin Pan Alley, but more because I'm annoyed the print was messed up than because it's worth thinking about.
I just watched LIFE SUPPORT last night and the first thing I though about when I woke up was Queen Latifah's mesmerising, full-bodied transcendent turn. Seriously, has anyone else seen this? I know it was aired on TV in the US about a year ago so it's not really hot news, but it's just been released on DVD over here.
Oh. My. Good. God. Is Latifah beyond brilliant in this or what? She won the Best Actress Golden Globe and SAG (and I'm sure narrowly missed the Emmy to Helen 'awards-horse' Mirren). Almost bagged the trifecta. I know this post is too far down in the comments thread, but, please, someone tell me what they thought of the performance. Has anyone else even seen the film? I'd love to have a dialogue with someone about it, but no-one's seemed to have seen it and it's not a film that really gets talked about in the blogosphere.
Latifah is so good that she immediately (but not without a pang of sadness) replaced Julie Christie as my Best Actress pick for 2007, with it regrettably bumping the lovely Laura Linney out of my Best Actress shortlist.
Does anyone else agree that if LIFE SUPPORT had a cinematic release, Latifah would've been a shoo-in for a nomination, if not the win (disease theme, previous nominee, American) in such a divisive Best Actress year without a strong frontrunner?

If I really can't decide, I'm watching Alice Adams again.
The Wings of the Dove. Because of that gorgeous still series you linked to. It was a truly stunning film, and time has done wonders for it.

especially in the year of TILDA. It's so weird that only the Oscars got it right for once ;)
Children of Men and Y tu mama tambien. Clearly, I have a Cuarón fixation.
The Dark Knight.
A website I was on earlier had a link to some spoilers concerning Two Face which, despite not wanting to know any spoilers, I clicked on. And now I wish I didn't know them :(
I couldn't help myself.
Sweeney Todd... cause... It's, like, the best movie ever...
..and thinking weather or not to watch that new Dark Knight trailer...
What a great post Nat.
Simple.

Slightly too obsessed by this film this morning!
i haven't seen that but your rave makes me think i really missed something
Yeah the film itself is so-so - nothing we haven't seen before, with some nice moments - but it's Latifah that really makes it worth your time.
