Jonathan here. You know what I'm not crazy about? Remakes. I don't like movies I love being redone with people I don't love. But I don't mind so much when they're veiled remakes. You know, they take a familiar story and kind of, sort of remake it. Here's a list of some of the more successful ones and if you can think of any more please let me know. Some of these I like the original source best, some the remake but in none of these cases do I dislike both. Here's the list. I thought that Match Point and a Place in the Sun were pretty similar in regards of plot...maybe?

Full disclosure, I haven't seen Horror Express yet. I was hesitant to put this up as the '51 and '82 versions are both stated as remakes of the novella, but they are all far enough apart in tone (and content) to constitute totally separate entities in my mind.
The Three Amigos was also based on the Seven Samurai. :)

Love Clueless/Emma. I'd heard it was a remake, but was impressed when I finally saw it with some of the sub-plots following suit; particularly the character of Christian. Love both films (the Kate Beckinsale/Samantha Morton version, of course. No Gwyneth for me.)

No one ever thinks of that one, but the plots are almost exactly the same!
1. the King and Father stand on cliff at beginning
2. animals honor the new prince

4. two friends (one funny, one stinky) show him the ropes
5. A parent is killed
6. bambi/simba grow up to become care-free and then fall in love with childhood girlfriend and forced to take more responsibility
7. duel to the death to become king
8. Have baby(ies) and stand on the cliff/rock, replacing the previous king.
