Same Old Story

Jonathan here again. So, they're aging Kate Winslet for The Reader, huh? Well looking back through the history of actors in age make-up one thing's clear; Kate's not going to look like this (to the left) when she gets older.

Remember Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson and James Dean in Giant? They were all young and beautiful so what happened when it came time to age them? They got a can of grey spray paint and sprayed their hair. My favorite part was Dean. Not only did he set a trend decades before its time in the movie by having a pompadour in the twenties but when he gets older it's still there, as full as ever only it's grey and shiny.

With Ash Wednesday they did a much better job with Taylor and in Citizen Kane Orson Welles had some fantastic make-up applied. But is that how they looked when they really did get older? With Taylor it's a close call. With Welles it's a total miss. And Winslet? I'm betting she looks a lot better than her character does when she reaches that age.

Max von Sydow in The Exorcist was so damn close to how he actually aged, that people are shocked he's still alive

You're right, I hadn't thought of that. He was only 44(!) when he made The Exorcist. That was a fantastic make-up job. Another great make-up job was Brando in The Godfather. He didn't look anything like that when he got older but I remember being confused when I was a kid about how young he looked in Last Tango in Paris. "Wait a minute," I thought, "that was made after The Godfather. Maybe he had plastic surgery."

I wonder if Dustin Hoffman will resemble Jack Crabb when he's in his 100's?

Oh man, the second half of Giant is like some surreal Twilight Zone experience.

Glenn - Haha, it's true, it's true. It's like for the second half of the movie, everyone's the same age but there's this new trend in Texas where you draw little faint lines around your eyes and mouth and spray paint your hair.

The first half gets pretty surreal for me too with Dean (who does a great job don't get me wrong) walking around supposedly as a pre war handy man with an amazingly fifties teen idol look about him. Greasy, limp, matted hair? Hell no baby, this is Dean!

Anon - Thanks, I made the change.

Original Star Trek featured an episode where Kirk, Spock, McCoy and Scotty all start rapidly aging, and it is astoundingly different from what we'd see by the time the movies rolled around ...

'old' Kirk
'old' Spock
'old' McCoy
'old' Scotty

old Trek for real
