Never saw Written on the Wind? You're missing out! My favorite line occurs when Robert Stack wants to go into the bedroom where Lucy is supposed to be waiting for him. He knocks and asks, "Lucy, you decent?" Then he opens the door and realizes she's left and says, "I guess she was."
And once you see it the oil derreck model reference will make a lot more sense - it's one of the great closing images of a character in movie history.

Yes... as Lapper alluded too, the ending with the oil derrick model may be one of films most fabulous phallic moments that I can think of.
Dorothy Malone's is my second favorite supporting actress win just behind Hattie McDaniel's.

Fox - I love that moment so much. I love that they got it in the movie in the fifties because every one was too tightly wound for it to even register.
j.s. - You're not kidding. Malone is completely over the top in this movie, the only things she's missing is darting, flaring eyes, and yet she's great! It doesn't seem like a bad performance at all but like what it is, a great melodramatic performance, something many actors don't know how to do anymore.
I loved "Written On the Wind" ... I also loved Dorothy Malone ( even with her acting with her flaring nostrils ) ... I loved that she won Best Supporting Actress.
Really terrible movie. I'm all for kitsch, but when movies like this are so overlong the results are frightening.
It's hugging the oil well replica that gets me.
