i'll admit that i'm a little flustered by these feelings that the lack of coverage is connnected to racism. I linked to the story which is all i would ever really do in these cases. and I am still in shock at how purely terrible every last detail is...

but it's not a MOVIE topic and other than linking to it i can't see what film or awards blog SHOULD be saying about it. I guess i don't understand what people expect from their entertainment sources. It's not entertainment. It's tragedy.

i for one am glad not to be in the cheap emotional porn business of something like Entertainment Tonight. You know they love to grind every celeb-related crime or tragedy into the ground until nothing feels like anything but an excuse for cheap automaton infotainment feelings. ick.

elgringo -- yes! Although i signed up early so mine is pretty cheap. the only thing bad about it is that i don't dare change my plan ever because then i know i'd lose my original subscriber rates.

Lindsay Lohan's craziness was a movie topic???

Heath Ledger's Death vs. Bernie Mac's death vs. Anna Nicole's death. I mean I don't expect him to get as many as Heath, but not even one comment.WTF

Yeah it pisses me off.

Larry Miller (aka the guy who banned Brokeback Mountain and is in the process of banning Zack and Miri in his theaters) is a crazy radical who has no business whatsoever owning a movie theater chain if he has no respect for provocative pictures. For some reason, this story really bothers me...

Off topic stuff. The Environment and Conservation is HUGE on my mind at the moment and sadly not enough is being done.

fnique11. I totally agree with you. There has been 100 times more press about the Madonna divorce than there has about Jennifers tragedy. However I for one am not the type of person who wants to see either covered as much as they are in the media.

They may be celebrities and in the spotlight, but these are private things. All I want to know is that Madonna will still make music, and that Jennifer finds her nephew and is allowed to grieve.

hillary swank was on ellen today. she was super hyped up—maybe chugged a few red bulls—, and dressed like the host herself. the interview only lasted a minute or so, and the whole occasion was awkward. but i do like ms. swank, so i'll let it slide. sorry?

Two things about American culture are still big question marks for me. Quite superficial things, not big issues.

- Suburbia: there are so many TV series, TV movies and movies dealing with life in suburbia or set in suburbia that one gets the impression almost no one lives in the cities or in the traditional small towns any more. And also, if life in suburbia is so dull, why do people keep on moving there? Don't they see on TV they won't like it? ;)

- Abbreviations (or more accurately, acronyms): I guess this is more about the English language than strictly an American thing. But you love acronyms for almost everything. I confess it has become a sort of funny game, everytime I read sites/blogs to find out what the acronyms stand for (i.e. LOTR:RTK, I'm doing something wrong here...) What strikes more, though, is that abbreviations are also used for road signs. It took me a while, my first time in the US to know what XINGs were ;))But the best one (not abbreviation) was the "Slow Children" sign. Simply hilarious for foreign eyes. And no, I wasn't visiting the White House.

iggy -- true about suburbia. The really strange thing about the view of cities (always trumpeted as "bad" somehow) as compared to suburbia or small towns is that it doesn't match up with reality either.

Maybe it's just the media or the divisive nature of politics or the "real america" political soundbites but cities get blamed for immorality, crime, pollution and everything but cities are actually better for the environment, energy, economy and can be great instruction manuals as to how to live peacefully in the modern world. You've got millions of people living side by side -- mostly in peace -- despite great differenceas in religious / political / sexual / social / racial whatever! Whereas smaller towns it seems (but maybe this is a media distortion again) there's very little tolerance for differences - and lots of ignorant fear about people who are "different"

el gringo --um, yeah. Don't you love that Apple came out publicly against it. I love my Mac.

re: jhud case. sometimes i wonder why in the world women get involved with such horrible men.

i can't wait for this election to be over....it's been going on forever. i am so tired of both candidates saying such horrible things about each other. why can't we all just get along.

i am assuming the catholic church is going to condemn "Doubt"and not really look beyond the real message of the movie....it's about questioning faith, which we all do at one time in our life.

i am grateful to have my dog, an adorable cocker spaniel....he's such a good pal.

If Jennifer Hudson herself died then I'm sure Nat would write something about it, but the Heath Ledger incident was a completely different thing to, say, Bernie Mac. I'm sure if, heaven forbid, Angela Bassett passed that Nat would be there worshiping her memory. People shouldn't be so quick to jump to assertions like racism.

BTW, an acronym is only, technically, an acronym when the letters spell a phonetic word. For example PETA, AIDS and NATO are acronyms whereas RSPCA or KFC are not. Or, at least that's what I was taught.

A question: Why is the election on a Wednesday in America? Like... huh? Nevertheless, I get home from work at 6 so I'll be following frantically through the night.

Kamikaze, you're most likely right about that. Acronyms being those ones you can read as words even if you don't remember what thay stand for (i.e. laser). In Spanish we call them both "siglas", so I just thought acronyms was used for both kinds also in English.

I guess this isn't really off topic, as it's still about movies, but it doesn't really fit anywhere else and I just had to tell someone, so here it goes:
I've just seen the trailer for the new adaptation of Thomas Mann's "Buddenbrooks" and I think it looks fantastic! Can't wait to see the film.
