The Curious Case of Maria Bello

"HEEEYYYYYY!"

Maria just wanted to say hi.

Maria Bello needs a job. No seriously. How you do what she did in A History of Violence (my review --she won my gold medal, too) and not be deluged with major offers. How do you do what she did and end up playing second fiddle to Alison Lohman in a horse movie? Sigh. Her most recent ignoble defeat at the hands of Hollywood? Replacing Rachel Weisz in the Mummy pictures past their prime this past summer. That vaguely reminded me of that horrific moment when they threw a brunette wig on Elisabeth Shue for what was amounted to a throwaway part in Back to the Futures II & III ...perhaps hoping that nobody would notice the replacement of the original actress whatshername. That was so weird. Anyone old enough to remember that? As a young boy I was desperately in love with Elisabeth Shue via The Karate Kid -- 'tis true. This McFly move emotionally signified the end of Shue's stardom for me (yes, even as a kid I went all white-knuckled, fearing unemployment for my actresses ...no wonder I'm getting worry lines). But then 5 years later Leaving Las Vegas premiered and the blessed Oscar nomination happened for Ms. Shue.

What does all this mean? Maria Bello in 2013, people... Maria Bello in 2013!

Screw Maria Bello - GET ELISABETH SHUE SOME WORK! The admittedly weird BttF Shue replacement made you worry about her luster? Maybe I was just that slight bit younger than you for that to not be a concern, but I loved seeing her in them. Even though yes she had nothing to do. Anyway, I loved what she did in Hamlet 2 but I ain't joking - I want her to work for real. Dammit.

You always make such inspired decisions, Nathaniel, but giving her the Gold may be my least favorite choice of yours. Ewwww.

Yeah Nathaniel, have you actually SEEN The Cooler yet?? For all you write about Bello, any mention of her work in The Cooler is still conspicuously absent, as far as I recall.

And I DO remember Elizabeth Shue in BttF, but I didn't know it was her at the time! That movie was a staple of my childhood, but I was too young at the time to know who Elizabeth Shue was. How funny.

I actually remember liking the first actress better. Kind of like the first Darrin in Bewitched (even if the second actor WAS gay).

It was an absolute scandal Bello wasn't nominated for A History of Violence -- she was leagues ahead of the competition that year.

That Rachel Weisz won (undeservedly, IMO) that year and Bello is now picking up her shoddy leftovers is irony too cruel to contemplate.

Still, "Towelhead" was worth her while, and the new Rebecca Miller film she's in sounds promising... let's not despair yet.

Didn't care for History of Violence - the movie. I did however love History of Violence - the scene where Maria is in her old high school cheerleading outfit.

JA --good point. Elisabeth Shue! she was fun in Hamlet 2... is Hollywood paying attention?

(based on past experience the answer is probably: no)

Ha, love that you have an Oscars(13) tag.

Amen.

Poor Maria. Nobody's writing parts for half-naked harpies these days, I guess . . .

Kin - i know, right? i figured it might come in useful once Dakota and Elle start fighting for those Evan Rachel Wood roles. ha ha

RJ -ouch. what did Maria Bello ever do to you young man?!

That original actress was Claudia Wells, btw.

And yes, I noticed at the time - Shue had come off that starring turn in "Adventures in Babysitting", (one of the few times, when I was growing up, when a "girl" got a lead role that was an active "adventure" role, not just "pining about a boy or dresses" role.) So to go from that to Marty McFly's girlfriend (and get what, less than five minutes of screentime between two films? In one of them she fainted and remained so the rest of the running time, I think) seemed like a definite come-down and indicative of this simple fact: Hollywood did not know what to do with women, and "Babysitting" was a fluke.

Just as LLV apparently was, alas.

Mario Bello should have won supporting actress for "A History of Violence." Oh that's right, she wasn't even nominated. FAIL.

I love Maria Bello! I'm seeing more of her films as I work on my site for her and she's solid in all of them. I thought she was better in The Cooler than AHOV though ... I mean, she was great in AHOV but I didn't see the big deal when I watched the movie.
She has some great movies coming up - Yellow Handkerchief and Downloading Nancy. But I wish she'd get more high profile, A-List-y roles sometimes ... so she gets the recognition she deserves! I wonder why she doesn't get them ...

Is it OK to admit I've seen The Jane Austen Book Club five times...mostly for Maria?

flickhead -- it's always ok to admit to loving an actress (well, with one or 3 exceptions)

I recently discovered your blog and much, much kudos for it.
Re: Maria Bello replacing Rachel Weisz, as much as I like Maria Bello and would love to see her getting better roles, I can't feel any sympathy for her choosing to join a sinking ship and replacing a beloved actress among the fanboys and girls. It's not like she has been out work the past years and is broke (I'm assuming). Whatever the motivation, ultimately it was her decision to accept the role and a pretty bad one (decision, and reading some critics def. a bad role) which won't be helping her career at all, I'm afraid.

Love Maria Bello! shes just simply one of those actresses who has the chops, but has never really gotten that big break! doesn't mean she's less talented than the Reese Witherspoons, and Kate Winslets of Hollywood, just down to luck!
