Things aren't as dire as they seem!
In other news: I have writer's block today. It's rare but true... new posts tomorrow. Nick, Mike and I are also running a bit late on the 'Best Pictures From The Outside In' front. The next episode featuring Titanic (1997) and You Can't Take it With You (1938) is in progress. To be aired... um... soon?

titanic sucks so bad
People are so hypocritical about Titanic. I mean really, how do you think it made all its money: "Oh man, Titanic sucked. Let's got see it again." ?
I'll admit, I was a naive 11 year old when I first saw it, but I will never forget that this is the film that made me give a shit about films, actors/actresses, pop culture and, most importantly, the Oscars.
Not to mention that without it, Kate Winslet's career may never have taken off. Recognize, people.
I liked her career just fine beforehand, when it was just me, her, and the world's arthouse dwellers enjoying her in films like Heavenly Creatures and Jude.
But I can't deny Titanic its propers. It's an effective thrill ride with some handsome fellow fairgoers to look at. If it were as long as the average roller-coaster I'd ride it again and again. At its current length once was enough, thank you.
Don't mock Titanic. You can say it is not of my liking, but not "sucks so bad". Because it is a technically amazing film with great performances, amazing visuals, etc. There's a difference between personal viewpoint and quality.
Maybe I'm biased considering Titanic was, at the tender age of 6, the film that made me realize I wanted to be a filmmaker.
Okay the movie maybe didn't have the best screenplay. In fact, it kinda sucked (how he got a GG and WGA for the screenplay still surprises me...) but I have to hand it to Cameron for making a movie that has fantastic techs (And I'm gonna say it deserved its 11 Oscars. Each and everyone of them) and acting and is also entertaining. The script is meh but the story line is very well done. Its just the words that sound horribly on screen (tho the actors are all top notch).
I jut think this movie gets too much hate from bloggers but some of them don't even say why they hate it. Its just "Titanic sucks."
I'm sorry to say that I would have rather seen Kate jump, then Gloria tossing that big blue diamond in the sea.
Nathaniel, I want to hear your thoughts on The Wrestler. It totally surprised me that it's been my favorite of the festival so far (granted, I haven't seen much).
I also think I saw you today after Changeling. Who, me, stalker?
It's always tempting to criticize a film, book, etc. that's extremely successful - it can't be THAT good. And I think it's true that mega-success is often not entirely deserved. But it's silly to say Titanic has no artistry or appeal.
Oh how I wish TITANIC would've met up with GONE WITH THE WIND. How perfect would that have been? THE ENGLISH PATIENT will make a good companion though, with it's "indie" spin on a sweeping epic.

I can't wait to read your opinion on Titanic. It's still my favorite film of all time (not the GREATEST, but my personal favorite) and as far as I remember, it was on your 1997 top ten as no.3 or something, so you must like it quite a lot (since that was a pretty damn awesome year for film).
I'm loving this whole series, by the way.
I cannot see "Revolutionary Road" in theaters. Every time I see a publicity still of Kate Winslet from this film, my hormones go into overdrive. If I go see this in public, I'll embarrass myself.
Heck, I have carnal thoughts about her in the "Titanic" still in this post and the character is thinking about suicide. How wrong is that?
For a moment there, I thought that was Satine...I'd forgotten how much of a debt Baz owed James (which Baz freely admitted to, btw.)
But then again I do have a thing for red-headed women. (even if the red is completely fake.)
