Do you have any cinematic New Year's Eve traditions?

... or do you just get drunk at parties like everyone else?

Actually I do! Every year, I watch Billy Wilder's "The Apartment" (Jack Lemmon, Shirley MacClaine). And what's scary, is that I begin watching the movie at precisely 10:06PM so that when its "New Years" in the movie, my clock strikes midnight!

Its the best New Year's Eve movie I know.

I'm just going to get drunk. Maybe I'll think about a movie or something...

Yeah, I just get drunk at parties. I'll probably be drunk in a few hours. Is that bad?

Well, I'm trying to party, but don't have a place to go yet this New Years. But usually no movie tradition... thought I remember ringing in 2002 at the then-UA Union Square movie theater with Josh Hartnett & Ewan McGregor in 'Black Hawk Down'. Everyone's cell phone at the theater lit up when it struck midnight, kind of distracting.

Anyway, who's gonna invite me to crash their party this year? I promise I'll be oodles of fun and be on my best behavior (until midnight). :P

I stay home to avoid drunk drivers. No specific tradition, but when 2000 became 2001, I was actually watching 2001 on TCM.

I will inaugurate the New Years with chocolate cake and Season 1 Episode 1 of HBO's THE WIRE. So YAY ME! Only REEL people. Just the way I like 'em.

Drunk!

Drunk, drunk, DRUNK! If I become so funny it's worth filming, then that will become my cinematic tradition.

I always plan some sort of movie marathon on New Year's Eve, or watch The Twilight Zone marathon (the plan for tonight).

And then, it's a day's worth of movies the next day, but that's at the theaters!

For tonight I plan watching (for the 1st time) my ilegal screener of The Curious Case of BB (dvd quality). I hope I'll adore it!

I'll also have the 2nd half of Revolutionary Road with me, in case I get nostalgic for 50s drama.

p.s.: Leo's character is sooo annoying. no wonder he'll get shit, come nomination day.

I try to remember to watch Bitter Moon (it climaxes at New Years), but I'm usually asleep by 10pm.

Take pity. I'm an old man.

Stay in and watch TV, generally.

I snort some heroin then watch old Madeline Kahn movies. "Come on and let Trixie sit up front with her big tits." Life is good in 2009.

No New Year's Eve traditions, but I am bringing a collection of good hangover movies to the party I'm attending. Just in case.

I have movie marathons during which I get drunk :)

(When Harry Met Sally is often a staple.)

My stepsister and I tried a movie musical, party-free tradition.

One year it was dinner, then we rented Moulin Rouge.

The next year we took a little road trip to see like a 6pm Chicago (it hadn't yet opened up to all cities) and then had dinner.

I think that by the next year, we just weren't moved to see Phantom, so we made dinner and watched Spellbound. Which, not so much a musical.

Then we stopped. Now I'm back to parties.

Get drunk on New Years Eve and force people to see a movie on New Years Day.

Everyone's too hungover to protest...

I might be extra sadistic and suggest Doubt tomorrow.

Oddly, I always watch The Last Picture Show.

roberta "not so much" lol. but in a funny way aren't all old movies more like musicals than they at first appear?

Pizza, champagne, and a movie, because we're classy that way.

We will watch one of the films we have rented. Here are the options:
Beguiled
The Lady with the Little Dog
Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
Casque D'Or

I'm leaning towards Woolf because we're both academics and likely to be drunk as well, so it's fitting, but I don't know.

christine -WOOLF is awesome. have at it.

Watching Woolf right now. Wow, TOO CLOSE TO HOME. Seriously, this is like every faculty dinner party I've ever been too. Great New Year's suggestion.

Heh, new year's is kind of like my mom's Christmas Eve (Russian thing), so we had a fairly awesome obligatory family dinner, while a Russian comedy (can't remember which one, despite years of this... :p it has a new year's theme and is from the 70s, I think) played in the background as we ate dinner. Awesome. :)
