Signatures: Nicole Kidman

Adam of Club Silencio here with a look at my favorite actresses and their distinguishing claims to fame.

Like a sparkling diamond we can't take our eyes off of Nicole Kidman. Let's be honest, she prefers it that way. Nicole likes to place herself at the center of everything - at least on camera.

Even indirectly, be it as a writer whose words and legacy trickle down through the generations, or as a TV weathergirl who uses her husband's funeral for publicity; Nicole has a way of making things revolve completely around her.

Entire townships rely solely on Nicole for their daily chores and sexual favors, and children pretend to be reincarnated just to get with her. Likewise her directors have a way of being utterly entranced by her -- feeding her needs while still maintaining it's all "essential to the story."

The ravishing Aussie beauty insists she's the opposite of her screen-stealing persona, "I'm very exposed in the movies I do, yet I'm incredibly private in my own live." Should we believe that Nicole dislikes all this attention? Well Margot certainly doesn't... Watch her climb a tree! She used to be so good at climbing trees.

Nicole's content with her place in the spotlight for the moment, or so she says. "People used to say, 'Oh she's so cold.' And now they realize, I think, that it's actually misinterpreted. It's actually shyness. I am really, really shy. As a child I would hide under my mother's skirt, and they couldn't get me to come out." But in reality she was just under there planning how to get our attention next.

"Wilting flower? Bright and bubbly? Or smoldering temptress?"

Say what you will, but few "movie stars" choose more daring projects and attack them with relish like she does. One of a kind and one for the ages.

funny that adam just posted this because i was working on a Kidman tribute myself. of another kind

I hope some day "the lady from Shangai" will ever be filmed (with her)

I think in retrospect, people will really begin to appreciate the audacity of some of her roles.

I mean, Birth alone made her one of my all time favorite actress.

That opera scene. GAH. That's about the only word/noise I can muster...

NATHANIEL R said...

at least you can muster a noise! I still just shiver if i allow myself to think of it

so you will do a tribute nathaniel??

looking forward to it

i just don't believe it when actors declare their shyness. stay out of the limelight if you're so damn shy, people

and surely one nicole tribute is more than enough? maybe save them up for when she follows through on her threat to retire (fingers crossed)

It was JULIANNE MOORE's birthday last week... and noone talks about her. she is back on track with "savage grace" and "blindness". she gave such a subtle, powerful performance in "blindness" and noone is talking about it any more. shame on all the awards right now. I mean, Kate Winslet a double GG nominee? and nothing for Moore?

I've almost given up on Kidman.

I hope Nine is great though. And I hope she's doing The Danish Girl with Charlize Theron.

I can't for the life of me figure out why people trashed her so mercilessly in Australia. She was warm, funny, moving, and beautiful. It wasn't her best performance, but it wasn't her best script (far from it) either. She did a marvelous job, as she always does. I still hate her top lip, but it's something I'll have to live with, I suppose.

I really enjoyed Australia, those that didn't must be living on another planet. I am waiting to see how it does in other countries as most of them don't agree with us here in the USA! I hope to see Nicole in many more good movies!

Anonymous said...

I don't agree at all.
She's a very private person, who just happens to be a fantastic actress who loves her craft.

Nicole Kidman is my favourite modern actress! My all-time favourite is Audrey Hepburn.

Nicole Kidman will be considered a legend a few years from now, becoming a myth in our grandchildren's generations.

She combines lots of talent with uniqueness, style, intelligence and beauty; she is a terrific actress, and she loves her job. She makes very interesting choices and understands cinema and performing as creative works, works of art.

Without Nicole Kidman, the 2000's would not have been as lovely.

why Nicole isn't on your 20 actresses of all time list is beyond me. have you seen Birth, Dogville, Eyes Wide Shut, The Hours, The Others, Moulin Rouge!, Birthday Girl, The Human Stain, To Die For, The Portrait of a Lady, Dead Calm, Cold Mountain, Fur, Margot at the Wedding, etc, etc.???!?

NATHANIEL R said...

anon i have seen almost all of those movies yes. And I love Nicole Kidman. But that was an all time list. That's 80+ years of actresses... nicole is easily in my top 5 right now and probably still my #1 of this particular decade.

Glenn said...

Wow, that's actually quite surprising that she would still be your #1 of the decade (I can't wait to revisit that countdown in 2010). Although, I suppose not. She did have her amazing Margot perf last year.

She's so brilliant that I don't even mind her making a "Bewitched" or "Stepford Wives," because I know it will allow her to do small and edgy films soon after. That's her best asset as well -- not only is she a superb actress but she picks great films and great directors who know how to use her properly. I lust for "Lady from Shanghai."

i read your blog everyday and i must say i enjoy reading it. however, if there is one thing that i strongly dislike, it is the fierceness of your love for nicole kidman. but then again, this is your blog. :)

may i know what factors you considered when you came up with your list of actresses of all time?

Anonymous said...

Nat, quick get your love for Nicole out soon... i cant wait...

and among the 20, i dont see nicole's name... why?

Anonymous said...

Of course she likes to be at the center of everything:
"'cause what's the point of doing anything worthwhile if there's nobody watching? So when people are watching, it makes you a better person. So if everybody was on TV all the time, everybody would be better people. But, if everybody was on TV all the time, there wouldn't be anybody left to watch, and that's where I get confused."

Agent 69, that is the perfect quote, I can't believe I left it out! If you could go in and rewrite this post for me, I'd really appreciate it.

@ glenn

she was also very good in The Golden Compass and solid in Fur

which other actress has given us so many great perfs since 2000 ?

None

her only competitor is Blanchett (duh)... but that's because Winslet doesn't work as often as her Aussie counterparts

Anonymous said...

oh please. no way did nicole give a good performance in "the golden compass", a terrible movie by the way.
also, there is a long list of actresses who delivered better performances than kidman since 2000 (winslet, blanchett, swinton, keener, moore, gyllenhaal, morton, streep, dench, mirren, and a long list of young and veteran actresses).

Anonymous said...

A wilting flower - that is nicole.

Anonymous said...

You included Winslet and Moore, but NO Kidman???

NATHANIEL R said...

theskyisthelimit the top 20 was not scientific at all. It was basically the movie stars I like thinking about and watching the most. And I did give the classic stars the benefit of the doubt in some ways assuming the stuff I haven't yet seen is as good as the stuff I have seen from them. But all this talk of why did you leave out...

only makes me request that people look at two much more interesting / accurate lists.

My Top 100 Actress All Time

and the Top 100 Actress of this Decade (based on movies from 2000-2005... yes I will update it at the end of next year and yes it will look a lot different with 4 more years of movies added)
