I think the only category I'm excited about is Actress (Drama) which I have so far been unable to predict...

Could Streep and Winslet go home empty-handed with Hathaway, Hawkins and Cruz taking the Globes?

Anyone got a link so I can watch online by any chance? None of my tv channels broadcast them. :(

I love that She WHo Must Not be Named decided to scare Nathaniel for life

Super happy about Best Supporting Actress. :)

It was so nice to see Kate win an award, but Penelope was robbed. That said I just feel even more in love with Kate Winslet.

1. I was not expecting Winslet and I loved it "I'm not used to winning things"

2. I wanna punch Miley Cyrus

3. I love Tom Wilkinson

Aw, Kate. This could prove to be a big night for TWC. I'm hoping The Reader will surprise in the Screenplay category. I wonder if there is any tension between her and Penelope Cruz over competing for TWC attention...

Does anyone else love the fact there is no host?

Why doesn't Oscar follow suit and do it this way. It's not that big a deal.

Yeeeeees!!!!! Go Kate!!!!

I still think she's winning the lead Oscar and Cruz take the supporting one

who's with me ?

Anonymous said...

No one is with you, because Kate Winslet already won Sup Actress. It's been announced.

Anonymous said...

Damn, you're talking about Oscar. Sorry about that

Bernardo said...

I wanna hug Sally Hawkins. And how awesome are Emma and Meryl?

Glenn said...

Did Kate just win an Oscar, too? I'm not watching them (I don't have "cable") but from what I read of her speech at Yahoo it sounded good and if they want a good speech at the Oscars they could give the award to her. I'm sure she's bagging at least one nomination on Oscar morning. I still hope it's for The Reader and it's in Lead. Just because I think that would be a lovely wrench to throw.

And, also, because I so so want Cruz to win Supporting Actress.

adam k. said...

I kind of agree, Penelope was robbed. LOVED her in VCB. Just saw The Reader, and Kate, while very good, has been better before. Cruz does much more with much less. Just thinking about about that perf makes me happy.

I like Kate's Reader perf. better than her RR perf. and I want Kate to win a Lead Actress Oscar for it, so I hope there's truth with in your conjecture, Glenn.

Also, JAKE!!!

@ Bernardo and anyone else who knows: Who determines who gets to present at awards shows? What are the criteria? Why is Miley Cyrus here? As someone said on another thread, it's not like some kid who never watched an award show is going to be a loyal viewer now that Miley is presenting.

Wow, Slumdog Millionaire is sweeping. That's too bad.

Oh, God. I'm pleased for her, but did she really need to give Angelina another reason to look pissed?

And I feel for Hathaway. She must've privately thought she had this in the bag, right?

Anonymous said...

Congrats Kate, well deserved!

Jacob Passy said...

I'm glad that Kate won tonight, because I truly do love her. But was it necessary to award her twice? I feel bad for Anne, who hasn't been getting the love she deserves. As much as I love Meryl, I don't feel too bad for her.

I can just picture all of the HFPA voters looking at the ballot, and getting so frustrated over where to award Kate that they award her twice.

J.J. said...

I think the last and only other person to win two film acting Globes in one night was Sigourney Weaver! Can anyone think of others? So happy Hathaway didn't win.

adam k. said...

Yeah, I always knew she'd win lead! Sweet vindication!

Best actress is so competitive now. I hope this means Cruz can still win the supporting oscar.

Peter said...

Wow! Can she do it at Oscar also?

adam k. said...

I'm sure this was a collective case of "we have to make sure she doesn't lose both... I'll just vote for her in both". But yay. How unexpected.

John T said...

JJ-Joan Plowright also did it for Enchanted April and Stalin, but that was for both film and television. She, Weaver, and Winslet are the only actors to have won two in one night.

Joe Reid said...

It's too bad, because Angelina's been so smiley all night. But all anybody's going to be talking about is that stoic (stone-faced? scowling?) look she gave after Kate forgot her. Ah well.

Helen Mirren won two two years ago, didn't she?

Anyway, they just exploded the leading actress race.

Anonymous said...

Best Actress Oscar is now for Kate Winslet's taking, with or without the SAG.

Yay! Mickey Rourke wins Best Actor!

John T said...

Mickey Rourke's got the Oscar locked up. That standing ovation did it for him.

Glenn said...

Wow. The double bill for Kate! That's quite something.

Anonymous said...

Wow, Mickey won!! This is going to be an amazing three way race between Penn, Rourke and Eastwood for the big one.

Billy Held An Oscar said...

Helen Mirren also won two in one evening (The Queen and Elizabeth I)

Mirren also won two in 2007 (The Queen and Elizabeth for TV)

Glenn said...

I'm so happy for Colin Farrell, too! So deserved and I'm glad somebody had the guts to give him an award when he's hardly en vogue.

John T said...

Matt-I don't think it's much of a threeway race. That standing ovation means he's got this in the bag. The only way I see him losing is if there's some sort of Burt Reynolds thing, where the safer, but equally "due" co-nominee Frank Langella picks up the trophy. Otherwise, I think we're looking at Best Actor Rourke and Best Supporting Actor Ledger. Luckily, the ladies have it completely up in the air.

Anonymous said...

I don't know why you're putting Penn out of race, but he's certainly not.

Anonymous said...

Do you think the middle finger helped, John T?

Gustavo Cruz said...

Mirren won one for TV and one for Cinema. Winslet won both for Cinema.

Anonymous said...

Does anyone else think that Milk could be screwed going into the Oscars? Poor precursor tally, one GG nom and a big loss. Am I being too dramatic or could it get pushed out by The Wrestler or Doubt?

Anonymous said...

Rourke's win will sure help in winning Best Actor, but I don't think he has it locked up. I still see it as a four way race between Eastwood, Penn, and Langella.

Penn has the critics (and possible SAG) endorsement. Eastwood is burning up the box office at the right time and is incredibly favored by the academy. Langella is the dark horse that could possibly emerge as a winner.

So, Slumdog Millionaire will really win the Oscar?

Anonymous said...

Meh, Slumdog...

Anonymous said...

Slumdog wins... as if we needed any further confirmation of its future Oscar gold.

adam k. said...

Didn't PENN have the oscar all sewn up a few hours ago? What happened? I think it's absolutely gonna be a three-way race... or something... but no one has it in the bag.

I wonder which category Kate will win in now. I still really wanna see Bardem give Cruz the oscar.

Anonymous said...

I'm sure it's gonna be just a 2 way race. Penn vs Rourke.

Anonymous said...

Kate Winslet will win Best Actress. She's such a LEAD ACTRESS and it's fitting for her to win so.

Clint Eastwood will likely win Best Actor, if nominated.

Heath Ledger for Best Supporting Actor.

Whoever wins the Best Supporting Actress SAG will win the Oscar. Unless it's Winslet because I think the academy will award her in lead regardless of anything.

Penelope Cruz still looks like the frontrunner for the Oscar. Unless, somehow DOUBT manages a Best Picture nod, then they'll award Viola Davis.

Anonymous said...

So happy for Kate and Slumdog. So, so happy. I hope Kate will win in leading come Oscar night.

Ani Di said...

Jorge, How many people can do much better than they award winning performances? i really can't number them for you...it's an award, Kate deserve it...i'm SO happy!!!

my all "should win list" of actors actually won, really happy!

Anonymous said...

As much as I love Winslet, the eternal pessimist in me can't help but recall the year when Sigourney Weaver was a double nominee and took both Golden Globes... then at the Oscars, went home empty handed. I am thrilled with her Globes though!!

Show Highlights: Winslet, Rourke & my favourite part? Ricky Gervais (HOW is he not hosting the Oscars? GAH!).
Show Low points: Too many odd presenter pairings with awkward banter. No Meryl speech !!

Anonymous said...

I don't know, I still think Meryl Streep will win the SAGs and Kate will win in supporting.

Adam, I'm sorry but I also think she's miles better in "the Reader" instead Revolutionary Road. Her April looks good but nothing great (Even in little parts so annonying) and her Hanna, for the opther hand, is fantastic, complex and very human. I hope she wins, but for her best role; not for status. anyway, I'm still happy for kate, but I'm sad for Hathaway

Rich Aunt Pennybags said...

I don't know why you're putting Penn out of race, but he's certainly not.

I don't get it either. Just because Rourke got a standing ovation doesn't mean that he suddenly has it all sewn up. There's still plenty of time to do more damage to his campaign, and Penn lost both the Globe and SAG last time while winning the Oscar.

Jacob Passy said...

I'm still a little wary of Kate winning the Oscar. As much as I want her to do so, I still the lures of Meryl/Anne and Penelope/Viola may go against her. And considering her track record, this sadly may be the case. And I hardly think that Rourke has this in the bag. Getting a standing ovation doesn't mean that you're a lock for an Oscar. While he does deserve the award, Penn's performance is amazing.

Anonymous said...

i really hope KATE WINSLET does win the BEST ACTRESS OSCAR, i'm kind of sad for ANNE HATHAWAY because it was [i think] a once in a lifetime for her

i just don't want KATE winning the supporting [unless she takes both]

on other thoughts CURIOUS CASE and MILK are not as strong as we think we are, while WALL*E and WRESTLER are gaining momentum

Anonymous said...

What was up with them showing the ENDING of Slumdog? Thank goodness I've seen the movie, but I would be angry if I hadn't!

Steven said...

I too hope Kate wins for the better role and better performance, Hanna Schmitz in The Reader. Although, I wouldn't mind seeing a repeat double win at the Oscars! I certainly hope this means she wins at least one naked golden statue. Maybe voters will be intrigued by Oscar's first double win? It looked great at the Golden Globes, our first look at how Kate accepts an award. I definitely think she's passed the "speech" test and is on her way to finally win this year. At least I hope so. She deserves it. What a great year for her.

Beau said...

Winslet did not deserve the award for Supporting Actress.
And that's coming from someone who considers her one of, if not the best actress currently working in film. I'd rather have seen Tomei, Davis, Cruz (even Adams, honestly) get in than her. It was a very uneven performance, mirroring a very uneven film.

But I'm stoked for her winning for Rev Road (even if I'd have rather seen Hathaway run away with it) and over-the-moon about Rourke winning. JOY.

Beau said...

Can someone please explain to me how they felt she was stronger in 'The Reader'? I felt as though I were watching three separate performances in one film. Seriously... the Hannah in the courtroom had almost no resemblance to the Hannah earlier on in the film, (and I'm taking into account the drastic change of environment, let's not open that old chestnut.)

Pablete said...

Kate Winslet was the clear choice in leading. Kristin Scott Thomas could very well have been their second choice.

Supporting was a little bit more difficult. I enjoyed seeing Kate Winslet winning twice in a most deserving fashion.

I am starting to think that Penelope Cruz will win the Globe and the Oscar next year for "Broken Embraces", following Sophia Loren's trend once again. Moreover, Penelope Cruz will be a three time nominee if everything goes according to plan.

Will the Academy make history in so many ways as it seems viable as this very minute? "Slumdog Millonaire" as the biggest winner, the great, very young and yet overdue Kate Winslet as a double winner, the legendary Clint Eastwood winning for his swan song from acting in all-star-glory, John-Wayne-esque way, and the immortal Heath Ledger in supporting.

"Slumdog Millonaire" will be this year's "The Sound of Music" while "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" could very well be a new "Doctor Zhivago", come Oscar time.

The last Oscar ceremony of the decade is coming!

Anonymous said...

Two for Ms. Winslet! You go girl!

Jorge Rodrigues said...

Moments I will cherish for some time:

1) Killing joke by Winslet to open the ceremony: «Gosh, I'm so used to win nothing!» And btw, killing win in Best Supporting Actress category (undeserved in my opinion... and everyone can say whatever they want but to hell with being good sport... Cruz looked SO pissed (correction: surprised... I guess she believed she had it in the bag... And that Winslet win really caught 80% of the room in surprise)

2) Stupid, ridiculous, attention-craving Demi Moore who not only almost ruined Ledger's moment (again awkward like it was at BAFCA) TWICE but also made "witty" jokes on her daughter's posture... She's SO full of herself... Oh and did they have the need to show a clip from TDK? Is there anyone on this Earth who cares minimally about movies that didn't see TDK?

3) Incredible Tina Fey... Tellind her critics to «suck it»...

4) Fantastic line by 30 Rock's cast... The craft service lady... awesome...

5) Cool interaction from Emma and Dustin... They really got along...

6) Blake Lively on the other hand... OMG... So clueless... Other memorable presenter mentions of the evening: Sean Paul (à la Katy Perry... Cute and beautiful Kate Beckinsale was even afraid to approach the mic.... P. Diddy is so ridiculously full of himself as well...), Sascha Baron Cohen (amazing for 60 seconds... Then he went all over Madonna and ruined the picture... And it was fantastic to see Meryl still frowning to Cohen way after he was gone...), Renée Zellweger, Drew Barrymore (did they have a crazy person in their walk-in closets who told them to go like THAT to an awards ceremony where they would present an award?!) and others...

7) Kate Winslet winning twice. Argh. Just when I was about to applaud Hathaway... And Kate was SO off herself the second time... She started the wrong way by saying «Oh, Angelina...» (Angelina Jolie looked stunned when Kate said her name), continued the wrong way by thanking her co-nominees (and not Jolie) and ended the wrong way (I think every single one of us was confused about who did Kate Winslet marry because all those «thank you, I love you...» to Di Caprio...)

8) Weepy moments from both Farrell and Hawkins. Gosh. Poppy could definitely have lent a hand to Sally... Oh such a long, boring speech... And Farrell. I know that we wanted to say he regretted his little incident eight years ago but come on... He paused EVERY 2 SECONDS... My god... He really looked jaded... He wasn't expecting to win.

9) Mickey Rourke opening FOR GOOD the Best Actor race. Penn vs Rourke is on! I really liked Penn but I am confident that Rourke will at least give him a run for his money...

10) Overrated Slumdog wins everything. Has everyone GONE MENTAL? Geesh. I can acknowledge that it is a GOOD movie but... Bleah! David Hare should've won Best Screenplay. David Fincher or Stephen Daldry should've won Best Director. Rahman's score is better than Desplat? Oh you must be deaf!

BEST PICTURE is actually the one thing I can really back up.
From that five-film lineup there was none better than Slumdog. If we had Milk, The Wrestler, Rachel Getting Married, Wall-E or even The Dark Knight on that lineup...

11) After this ceremony I am REALLY PRAYING TO THE SKY that Miley Cyrus isn't nominated for her song from Bolt... She looks SO... cheap. And childish. And that tongue out... Ah, I just want to punch her in the face! Same with Jonas Brothers. WHAT THE HELL WERE THEY DOING THERE? AND ZAC EFFRON? Untalented brats!

12) Happy for Rourke, Farell, Hawkins, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Heath, Springsteen and 30 Rock. All deserved their wins.

DOES THIS CEREMONY CHANGE ANYTHING IN OSCAR TERMS?

1) I was already sure of it, now I am more. Kate Winslet will be nominated for both lead and supporting (like adam k said earlier, this case of «she can't lose both awards this year again» will repeat at the Oscarsd) and will win for both lead and supporting. Although I really wanted to see Cruz/Bardem and Day-Lewis/Winslet... Two brits and two spaniards... But it's so annoying that for Winslet to win Lead Actress it will be for a performance that is not very good and for a performance she can do blinfolded... Hathaway and Streep will battle and cancel each other out leaving the battlefield clear for Winslet to step in.

2) Ledger will emerge victorious at the Oscars. I was afraid that the GG prefered to honor someone else but I'm glad they stick with him. He was the best of 2008. Everyone nominated with him should be thankful just to be nominated.

3) Penn vs. Rourke will continue to the Oscars. Everyone thought 3 hours ago that Penn had everything locked up. Now everybody is wondering. And I really believe Penn will lose the Oscar just because we already won in this decade...

4) Female acting races are SO on right now. Not in terms of nomination because we have already 4 out of 5 in each category assured... The last spot is the most arguable... Jolie, Streep, Hathaway and Hawkins are in. Winslet with this win seems to be win too. Cruz, Davis, Winslet and Tomei are in. I sure hope De Witt is in too.

5) Slumdog phenomenon will continue at the Oscars. I sure hope not but Picture, Director, Score, Adapted Screenplay seem taken. Can Cinematography, Art Direction, Film Editing and Sound Mixing be its too?

Steven said...

Pablete, that's a very interesting look at the upcoming Oscars if it goes that way.

Beau, admittedly, it's not an easy performance to swallow. You don't really see much from her perspective and it's not a character you can love. I think it's a performance you understand after the reveal. Everything she does is because of the things she is hiding, including her choice to become a Nazi guard, her choice to condemn herself, her choice to start a relationship with someone so young, her choice to take control of her life once imprisoned. It isn't until all the pieces are laid out that you see what she really did and her rationale. I really do think it's a brilliant performance and a tough role to master, which makes her skill shine even more.

This is such a fascinating turn of events. I'm wondering where SAG voters will give her the win? I'm thinking that she'll take Best Actress there. The idea of her winning two Oscars is ridiculous, so I'm sticking with the leading category. I'm thinking that Cruz (who received some nice attention tonight, with her film's victory and Salma Hayek's love-letter of an intro) will still win Best Supporting Actress. She can also count on a BAFTA win (since Winslet is Best Actress for both films).

Rich Aunt Pennybags said...

I'm still a little wary of Kate winning the Oscar. As much as I want her to do so, I still the lures of Meryl/Anne and Penelope/Viola may go against her. And considering her track record, this sadly may be the case.

Yes, I still don't believe that a double win in the acting categories will ever happen at the Oscars. They love having a foursome holding their statues together, and with Ledger looking to be a lock for his category, that already reduces the number of actors up there. So I can't see them only having two people up there if they give Winslet both the supporting and leading Oscars in one night. If she had just one won category tonight, I think it may have helped boost her chances for that category, but winning both categories still leaves things confused at least imho because neither role is emerging as the best one to reward her in. With no real frontrunner in Best Actress, it seems likely that she can win there now better, but since she's won two major precursors for supporting, it sort of throws a wrench in things again.
(Man, do I really dislike Harvey Weinstein more than ever now.)

Jorge Rodrigues said...

Well I do have to agree that being Winslet or Streep it's hard to do «your best job ever» xD

But what I was trying to say Glenn is that I'd prefer to see Winslet winning for something surprising like The Eternal Sunshine's role... Not for a stressed, restless wife and mom from the suburbs...

I'm happy that Winslet won and I'll be happy to see Winslet winning again at the Oscars in Lead. Although I pity Hathaway because like it was already said here it is kind of a once-in-a-lifetime chance for her... Roles like that don't appear that often... And if she keeps doing things like «Bride Wars»... xD

Once in a lifetime chance? For Hathaway?

Really?

The girl is 26 years old, and super famous. She will have many, many, MANY more chances to strut her stuff. This just thrust her into the big leagues, prestige-wise. The notion that she of all people will never get this chance again is quite silly.

Winslet will get other chances, too, for that matter, but she already has 5 noms behind her and has deserved to win multiple times. So I don't see how she doesn't win the "due" war.

That said, I could still see her losing both categories. Or winning both. It's quite ridiculous.

"Slumdog" in the house! Wooot! Win best picture at the Oscars now!

Kate Winslet's TWO wins, Sally Hawkins!, Mickey Rourke?, Tina Fey!, Heath Ledger, Ricky Gervais's awesomeness, Anna Paquin, Laura Dern, "Mad Men", "30 Rock", "Vicky Cristina Barcelona", and on and on . . .

Best Globes ever? Hells yeah!

ajnrules said...

If she gets nominated for both and loses both, and at the Academy Awards, she'd be one off from tying Peter O'Toole for most acting nominations without a win, and at the tender age of 34. That's a scary thought. :|

Anyways, go Heath! I loved how all the other nominees looked pissy, like they were thinking to themselves, "Great, I lost to the dead guy." But Tina Fey's speech was the greatest part of the night. "Suck it!"

I don't at all begrudge her some awards. There have certainly been many less deserving winners in the past.
But I'm quite disappointed by how needy she has come across during this awards season. Crying during a Total Film interview when told by the interviewer that she's liked? What was that about?

And now these speeches. I really used to think she was the kind of person who'd be able to look at these things in a more measured and appropriate way. Let's hope she was simply very drunk.

I heart Kate Winslet. I'm glad she finally has not only one but two GGs. And hopefully she can go back to being her fabulous self and (here I agree with anon 5:52) lose that air of desperation that surrounded her in the past few months. It was soo obvious that she DESPERATELY wants an award that it was almost physically hurting. Good luck to her come Oscar night.

Loved Colin Farrell's win, but would have loved it even more if Brandon Gleeson had won.
30 Rock is a great show, but there are other equally great shows on televison. Spread the love a little more!

P.S. Holy Moses, WTF was the one who must not be named wearing??!

Kate Winslet literally can't win both Oscars; it's against Academy rules. If she gets the most votes for both, she'll win whichever she got more votes for, and the other will go to the second-placer.
As for Sean Penn, and Milk itself, well, just look at what happened with Brokeback Mountain. Once the Academy's homophobia kicks in I fear it may not even get nominated for picture.

Billy D said...

As soon as Kate won for The Reader, I turned to my bf and said "She's going to win for Actress too." I knew they would want her up there twice. I'm hoping for a repeat at the Oscars! That would be a first, no?

Yes, I snickered to myself when I saw Renee Zellweger, because I knew that Nat would have a good laugh about it too. It wouldn't have been so bad though it was just the top part because it was see through and then everyone could see her white/light colored bra. It looked like something a desperate starlet would wear to get attention not Zellweger who usually looks nice if not somewhat boring. It's pretty bad when Megan Fox looks more demure and less deperate for attention.

Maggie just tries too hard I think. Her and Chloe Sevigny are the same to me as far as fashion goes. They're both great actresses, are pretty, but I don't understand their fashion choices are why they're hailed for being such fashinoistas when most of what they wear is fug. Nicole Kidman I understand because even when she doesn't pull something off which is rarely, I can see what she was going for, and it still looks okay certainly not fug like other "fashionistas" get away with.

Also, Drew Barrymore would have looked fine if it weren't for her awful hair. I think her and Jessica Lange looked like the scariest presenters imo. Lange because something was up with her forehead that made it look really shiny and weird. I guess botox?!?

Drew Barrymore looked like she had just came out of a whirlwind...

xD LOL

And Maggie Gylenhaal... No comment xD

People don't understand that Kate was in such a shock because from winning nothing to winning 2 in the same night is kinda shocking. I mean in the first globe she was OK but in the second globe it's understandable, it's a BIG deal.

An actor can win twice in separate categories. They just can't be nominated twice in the same category.

And when did Kate Winslet become perceived as horrible and desperately wanting an Oscar? Yes, she said she wanted one in a fashion magazine, but hasn't she been eternnally gracious with all of her Oscar/Globes losses? There's nothing wrong with wanting to be recognized for your work, and at least in that regard, actors want the same praise for their work that we'd want for ours, in their positions or otherwise. All of that "it's just an honor to be nominated" spiel does nothing for me. Just put it out there on the table what you want. If voters go for it, good for you, it worked. If they don't and think you are "desperate", then they'll pick someone else. Simple as that. It's their award to do with as they please. And in a world where Mira Sorvino, Helen Hunt, Jennifer Connelly, and Hilary Swank all have Oscars and you don't, I'd be pretty pissed off in general as to why I hadn't received an Oscar yet.

Three cheers for 2x Globes winner Kate Winslet!

John said, Tracey Morgan's reference to Cate Blanchett wasn't supposed to make sense. That's his thing. I loved his speech.

I was also so rooting for Colin Farrell, who moved me so much in In Bruges. So, yay.

I was quite pleased for "In Bruges" for the Farrell win; it's probably the funniest movie from last year. My only complaint was that Gleeson didn't win. Wasn't the consensus that he was the best part of the film?

The thing is that it shouldn't be that big a deal.

She's been an actress for a long time. She's at the top of her profession and can pick and choose her roles. She's constantly praised and adored by critics, colleagues and fanboys. She's happily (I assume)married with children.
All of those things should provide her with some sense of perspective.

And yet she completely unravels. I'm supremely baffled that she feels so strongly about getting a "seal of approval" from the small, random collection of nobodies who make up the HFPA.
She should have enough pride in her work, her standing amongst her colleagues, etc not to loose it over this silly popularity contest. That should just be a nice little bonus, not something earth shattering.

It's very unedifying and I'm dreadfully disappointed. I thought she was better than that.

Anonymous said...

I don't think it was 'earth-shattering' for her at all. She was happy to receive some damn awards. More power to her from here to the Oscars.

Keelay! said...

Wow. Bitter much Anonymous? She had just won an award. She has every right to be excited and overwhelmed. Nobody on this blog as any idea how it feels to win a Golden Globe, Oscar, etc., so maybe you should hold your criticism of her reaction? We have no idea how it felt to be her in that instance, and I will embrace the fact that it obviously moved her, not make cheap shots at her happy moment. Just because it dosen't seem like it'd be a big deal, dosen't mean it isn't. I wonder what would happen if they called your name after opening the envelope...

Kate Winslet: The Deborah Kerr of Oscars, the Sigourney Weaver of Golden Globes.

Sure she has every right to be excited and overwhelmed! Hell, who wouldn't be? But I understand anon that her acceptance speeches were kind of disappointing. I would have loved to see her more Meryl-Streep-like, being witty, confident, owning the stage. Instead she almost went the Gwyneth-Paltrow-route. Is it silly of us to project so much upon her? You bet your ass it is. But that's the way I feel.
And styx, her saying"fuck, I want one (Oscar)" in that Vanity Fair article is actually the way I like her. That was not desperate at all. Anyway, I hope that the double win will give her a major boost and that this won't be her last big award this year. Go Kate and own it the next time.

Anonymous said...

Oh, I totally agree with that. All of this "just to be in the company of these amazingly talented zzzzzzzz" gets old fairly quickly. Just coming out and saying, yeah, I want a f-ing Oscar of my own is awesome. It would be so much more genuine just to come out and say that without being stoned to death by the polite police.

I loved during the red carpet show when they were interviewing someone and all the sudden the camera would cut to some celebrity like "oooh look! we found dustin hoffman!"
Why are people being so grouchy about emotional acceptance speeches? I like that the award means so much to them...Sally Hawkins and Kate Winslet were the best part of the awards show. well, besides Tina Fey. and Ricky Gervais.

we all like to win and after 14 years it must've felt fukin' great to have your idols clapping n cheering, she has sat there so many times dignified in the face of defeat so what if she lost composure i bet she really though anne had won,i'm sure after the reader win her and her table must've though well she won supp so no way will she win lead let's hope a sigourney does not occur in february i'm still smarting for that and hating on geena davis.

explain how weaver was snubbed totally in 88 and from then on i'd luv to know did she not kiss enough asses.

Isn't it possible that the ovation for Rourke is not an indicator that he can beat Penn, but the opposite? "We know you're not gonna get an Oscar for this, so here's your big tribute moment, Mickey."

NATHANIEL R said...

yes, that's very possible.

I still think Rourke has an uphill battle to Oscar.

this made a few oscar races very interesting..
supp actor- not much change. ledger all but guaranteed, a downey or brolin upset would be shocking.
supp actress- wide open for the win. cruz may still be the favorite. winslet is definetely a force to be reckoned with. davis was the breakthrough of the year, but i am starting to think too short for a strong year (still a very viable candidate for win). tomei has been doing well with critics prizes and if the race stays wide open she could make it up there, similar to last years open race between blanchett, ruby dee and amy ryan, with solid nominee swinton coming through. the fifth nominee will be a filler and not likely to win.
actor- takes some steem away from penn. truly the two horse race for the win that it has been from the start. people have said langella and eastwood are viable to win, but it seems silly to ignore the momentum these two have maintained.
actress- could winslet still get snubbed? yes. if she doesnt, winslet streep and hathaway will be an interesting race. does hawkins have a chance if shes nominated? i think less, but shes in there.
picture & director- slumdog looking like a lock.

I've been watching some parts of the ceremony on youtube as I couldn't watch it yesterday. I found some things striking, just to nitpick a bit:

- The audience there, the celebrities are terribly noisy. They are all the time talking or walking in/out.
- Why was Sally Hawkins sitting so far from the stage? It took her a while to find her way.
- Both Winslet and Hawkins reading/checking names in a piece of paper. I hate the piece of paper moment. I realize they don't want to forget anybody, but it's just such a "deglam" (and not in a good way)moment, they should use PDAs or pieces of paper matching their dresses, lol. I don't know, maybe they could even consider learning the names by heart.

Disappointed I am to see some readers criticizing Winslet just because she delivered an emotional speech.

i was really shocked to come on here and find people complaining about kate winning boths GGs and her acceptance speeches!! i for 1 feel like there should be a national holiday that she finally won! and winning 2 ALMOST makes up for the injustice of how long it took for this to happen!!!

also how are people complaining about the speech?? it was everything a speech should be! (especially the 2nd) it was emotional and heartfelt without being embarrassing...ahem jennifer connelly....she was also charming, funny ( she got plenty of laughs)! and forgetting angelina was quality! also her thank yous to leo and sam were adorable and moving. if anything i love that woman even more now. this 'desperate' talk is ridiculous. shes just has the balls 2 be honest that it would be great 2 finally win something seeing as everyone keeps telling her shes the greatest actress of her generation! couldnt be more pleased!!!

HAPPY KATE WINSLET DAY!!!:):)

Where were all these people when Forrest Whitaker was out there giving the worst acceptance speeches known to man? I believe they were saying he was just overcome with emotion. And yet for Kate it's becoming too much of a girly princess or whatever. I'd probably cry if I won a Golden Globe, let alone two in one night! sheesh.

That thing about winning twice is not true at all. It has never been heard about before. Not when Julianne Moore had two noms or when Holly Hunter had two noms. In fact, wasn't there a belief that Hunter would actually win both of her categories? Maybe I'm imagining that. But, no, that claim is a lie. If Winslet truly gave the best performance in a lead AND supporting role then why would they make it against the rules to give her a statue for both categories? Very stupid.

sean i think you've hit on a super idea. Forever more let January 11th be known as KATE WINSLET DAY

i also thought she was over-the-top

it's a golden globe not the Nobel prize

what if she win the Oscar ? Will she be able to speak ?
