I'm not trying to be coy...

...about which film wins my personal Best Picture prize for 2008. If you've been reading for the past three months, you'll have that figured out already.
L'chaim!
But I'm guessing there's more than enough suspense within the other FB Award categories to keep you into it -- hell, there's even enough suspense for me... since 4th and 5th spots are still in flux in most categories. Hence, the blank pages. So as I finish write ups I'll be posting them. I've added notes on The Wrestler and Reprise on the top ten page. I've also posted a F.A.Q. for new readers (welcome! there's a lot of you) and/or forgetful ones and made sure the Oscar prediction pages were in order. A bit later I hope to throw up an entry into StinkyLulu's Supporting Actress Blog-a-Thon which is already a fun party. I was particularly enthralled by Stinky's brave props for a much maligned actress in a much maligned movie and the piece on Samantha Morton (Synecdoche New York). I don't care for that movie but I thought she was fan-tas-tic. I also recommend checking out interesting pieces on Catinca Untaru (The Fall) and Angelina Jolie (Wanted). But I must say "ARGH!" that category fraud happens even in this blog-a-thon. These are lead roles. Weirder still is that both articles justify this in the exact same super odd way by claiming, if I'm reading it correctly, that 'since the performance is successful... it's supporting!' Say whaaaaa?!? Well, I guess that's how the Oscars explain it too.

I hear new justifications for Oscar minded Category Fraud every year and they never convince me that the Protagonists are now Background Helpmeets. Joe warned me last night before we caught Valkyrie that I would one day have an aneuryism from taking movie award categories too seriously. He's right. So don't mind this unshaven crazy person in the corner (me) whispering "lead. lead. lead. LEAD. lead I say." to himself, whilst surrounded by shredded ticket stubs and madly scribbling on the walls. Today in a moment of attempted self-recovery and an olive branch to people who don't care about that line between Supporting / Lead I shall honor a woman who is kind of a lead when I post.

You're torturing me.
"Rachel Getting Married" won't be released in my country at all. I'll probably have to wait about a year for DVD.
:(

"Synecdoche" actually deserves the FBA for best wasted ensemble of the year.

Hell to YES! Rachel Getting Married is ridiculously underrated. There are so many aspect to the film. Anne Hathaway is of da charts but I also love the incredibly wonderful portrayal of Rachel and Sydney's interracial relationship. And the fact that it's not even brought up as interracial. They are just simply in love. So suck on that Bella and Edward. No pun intended.

LOL, that FAQ is brilliant.

I finally just saw it. It doesn't matter how many other films I see, there is no way it won't be my number one film of the year.

"Reprise" is no. 5
"WALL.E" is going to take the bronze.

I finally saw Doubt yesterday...and I kinda feel like Amy Adams is damn close to category fraud. I guess the movie is Streep vs. Hoffman, making them the obvious two leads, but she's the pivot and it seems like her screen time in the first 3/4 of the movie might actually outweigh her two co-stars. If the role was played by someone like Reese Witherspoon or Rachel McAdams, and Aloysius was anybody other than Streep, Sister James might even pull top billing.

Needless nitpicking, I know, especially since she fades into the background as the film hits its climax. Just something that came to mind.

The movie probably wont be release in my country too. I could see it somewhere in the net, but I wont...so I will have to wait. seemes great. And if Nathaniel liked it I will probably like it also.

Rachel Getting Married and The Wrestler are my two top films so far this year.

Got Milk to watch this evening.

Still to see RR and The Reader. Synecdoche and Happy Go Lucky.

Do I HAVE to sit through Frost/Nixon?

Oh and as far as category fraud and what makes a supporting actor...I am in danger of bursting a vein as well! That Jamie Foxx thing almost killed me!

I wrote a piece in October 2008 about this very subject..called, funny enough, Supporting Players.

One actor's opinion...It's archived, so check it out!

Frost/Nixon is actually quite good - I liked it despite not being really interested in the topic before.
Revolutionary Road was, for me, sadly disappointing.

Jolie in Wanted is a bit contentious actually. The film is so male-oriented that it almost seems inappropriate for it to have a female lead. It may seem as if she waltzes into McAvoy's life like Arnie in The Terminator films but she becomes less and less important as it goes on.

haha, so category fraud is one way of getting mentioned again in this blog (indeed different interpretations of supporting). in truth, Meryl Streep in Dark Matter was another perf I WANTED to feature but that one is even more of a lead role.

Karina Fernandez in Happy-go-lucky was another choice but just plain ran out of time (something you're familiar with). :(

oh and i believe Gina Pareno in Serbis is also considered a lead role.

I liked "Rachel..." very much and thought it extremely well done.. I still discount Anne Hathaway ( who was excellent in it ) as winning BA Oscar... for me the entire ensemble was excellent and she was a part of it ... but evryone supported each other!

jaded i wouldn't call anyone in SERBIS a lead... and if I did it would be the woman playing Pareno's daughter (who manages the theater)

sally --you know people in the industry. does anyone in the industry care about Category Fraud or does it seem like a notion flusters virtually no one? I'm curious.

Category fraud that failed: Keisha Castle Hughes, Whale Rider. So it doesn't always work.
