"We Are One"
I'm really trying to concentrate on work but all these wonderful actors keep distracting me on the Obama Inaugural Gala celebration. I guess it's streaming live here and free HBO today anyway. At first I was able to resist but then they went and threw Denzel Washington, Laura Linney and Marisa Tomei at me and I succumbed.

It's been wonderful so far.
My favorite part was Josh Groban and Heather Headley singing "My Country Tis Of Thee" with the Gay Men's Chorus of Washington. Very touching.
I lied. I'm completely sucked in. Garth Brooks singing with a choir kids makes me feel like a kid in the early 90s all over again.
count me out, I think Obama is a bluff... of course he will do better than dubya, but could anyone do worse?
I don't know, it kind of lost me when Tom Hanks came on board to pay tribute to Abraham Lincoln and the orchestra began competing to drown his speech in schmaltzy music, supposedly to try to make everyone believe they were watching The West Wing instead.
Sorry, but shouldn't we just save the fireworks until the guy has actually accomplished something?
Dude, I hate Bono and Bono made me cry. Then Bruce Springsteen made me cry again. I had to change the channel when Beyonce walked out, lest the third B of the apocalypse occur.
And for the record (and in response to you the pre-me negativity), I was a Hillary supporter so I'm not exactly changing my screen-name to ObamaFreekNumber1 any day now, but isn't anybody else just a smidge caught up in the historical nature of his election as well as just this enormous sense of relief that the biggest presidential failure possibly of all our country's history is outta there? Cuz I sure as hell am feeling it.
Yes, JA, I'm with you. Also a Hillary guy who just cried through the whole concert. Such an amazing sense of relief that this 8-year nightmare is finally over.
OK, I see now that my comment comes across more negative than it was intended. I'd TOTALLY take Obama over McCain any day of the week, I just wish there wasn't so much unconditional hyperbole surrounding him at all times. Messianic rhetoric does NOT equal accomplishment. Neither does a $120 million inauguration gala taking place in the middle of a financial crisis.

I couldn't watch the whole telecast today but will watch later. Are there any Asian American celebrities who were on? I didn't see any. Still invisible in the media.

gabriel -- i didn't see any asian celebrities there but at least with Obama we're moving into an era of inclusiveness.
everyone -- i agree with all of the negative nancys out there that Obama is no messiah or panacea and I do very much worry about the media and the public's need to make him into Christ 2: The Return.
BUT
regardless... he's going to be a million times the president that we've had for the past 8 years and maybe better than several before that too.

I love me some Bill Clinton. But yes, it's possible that Obama will be a better president than him.
maybe he'll have more successful with healthcare. maybe he won't be as easily trapped or distracted by things that have nothing to do with the country itself.
there are ways to be a better president than Bill Clinton.

I've just been deputized by Nathaniel (apparently he's busy with awards and lists and such?) Look people, we're both big Hillary supporters. But how can you not be thrilled that an incredibly intelligent, competent person is being sworn in as president?
Also, (I hate Palin for making me ashamed of typing that word) Mikadzuki - Tom Hanks wasn't talking over the orchestra - Copland's "Lincoln Portrait" was written with narration - it's like a non-sung oratorio.
So, people, let's just rejoice in our liberation from evil stupidity. Surely we can agree on that, non?

But (wow, I'm chatty tonight) Hillary as SOS - pretty awesome, I think she can do some really amazing stuff in that position. She's got an incredibly positively high profile overseas (I believe, am I wrong?) so I think she's in a good position to make some really good changes.
