What's the last movie you saw?

...and which Oscar nominee are you most eager to see when it arrives on DVD?

I just got out of 'He's Just Not That Into You'.... and seriously, there were moments in the movie where I sat there with my arms crossed, legs gittery because I was so mad and frustrated at how sad and pathetic most of these characters are (I'm looking at you, ScarJo & JLong!) by dropping these truth bombs a la the book it supposedly adapted from and yet within the last the last five minutes, it wraps up in a nice red bow.... Grrrr.

Okay, done with mini-rant. I'm still a little steamed. To answer the second question, I'm eager to see Michael Shannon again in 'Revolutionary Road' to see if I missed anything from him the first time again.

wellll, I desperately want to see The Class but my theater has been refusing to play it until THIS WEEKEND of course, when I have a rehearsal and am seeing Pippin. I'll find a way! On dvd....when is Wendy and Lucy coming out? I think the last time I checked, netflix said "unknown dvd release date".

Saw Changeling, which sucked. I want to see The Wrestler when it is out on DVD. Just didn't have time to catch it.

I just finished watching 'Missing' with Jack Lemmon and Sissy Spacek. Pretty good movie, but it felt kind of dated to me. Might try to watch it again when I'm less groggy.

In the theater, the last film I saw was 'Coraline' which was great--going to see 'Che' this weekend.

As for the Oscar nominees I'm looking forward to on DVD: I'm going to cheat and say Sally Hawkins in 'Happy-Go-Lucky', because that was my favorite performance of 2008.

Last movie at the cinema= the wrestler
Last movie at home (more recent than cinema)= rewatched Clerks
Looking forward to seeing 'in bruges' on dvd

the original Reefer Madness on DVD. the last new movie was the Friday the 13th remake. both are outstanding comedies.

when benjamin button hits dvd shelves, i am snatching it up faster than a wayward hummingbird flies.

I showed Notes on a Scandal to a couple of my friends and they now believe (even more than before) that I am a sick and twisted person for loving that movie as much as I do. Can I help it if Dame Judi Dench yelling ferociously at a baby-raping, smeared mascara-wearing Cate Blanchett totally makes my day?

I'm still really anxious to see The Class (and, sadly, DVD is looking more likely by the week) but this time I'll say Trouble the Water, which I've only heard raves about.

Just got around to seeing Cassandra's Dream, which was devastatingly bland and almost made me reconsider ranking Woody Allen in my Top 5 directors (or Top 6 - he's tied with Bunuel). On the plus side, I can now tick it off my yet-to-see list and never have to feel guilty about skipping it again. I now have only 4 Woody films to see (What's Up Tiger Lily, Night and Fog, September, Celebrity), only two of which I'm dreading (the latter 2).

As for which Oscar Nominee I will first rent on DVD - probably Iron Man, followed by Man on Wire, Benjamin Button and Encounters at the End of the World. I'm only looking foward to the first 2 of those and secretly praying that Herzog's latest isn't as morbidly pretentious as the most recent film of his I caught (Wild Blue Yonder).

Did you want this long an answer?

1. "Wild Strawberries" by Bergman. And it was pretty damn great, not than I expected anything less from him.

2. Probably one of the foreign language nominees (I've only seen "The Class"), although I'm not sure if "Revanche" or "Departures" will come out in theatres here in Toronto before it arrives on DVD.

The last movie I saw was The Wrestler for the second time and the Oscar nominee I am most looking forward to is The Class (a pretty popular choice here).

Y Kant... What's Up, Tiger Lily is very funny. And Shadows and Fog (is that the one you meant) is pretty good too. Haven't seen the others.

Watched Che Part 2 on Friday - incredible piece of filmmaking; and The L-Shaped Room on DVD over the weekend, it's dated but I still love it especially the oddballs who make up the (sexually confused) neighbours.

Looking forward to picking up a copy of The Visitor, missed it when it came out.

ha!!
dame james, i've also just rewatched Notes !!
I really love it too, when the comedy mood strikes me, Notes on a scandal is right on top.
I think people got it all wrong.
And of course, Dame Judi was robbed by Dame Helen.
last on cinema was the wrestler which i loved
and waiting for the dvd i don't know.. I just really want April to come quickly so i can see Rachel Getting Married, i'm prohibiting myself downloading it.. I don't know if i'll succeed.
i'm a sucker for small indie american dramedies of disfunctional families

I watched the tail end of "I Heart Huckabee" yesterday. I love that movie so much. And the fact that people hate it makes me laugh even more....you're just hating yourself, don't you see?!

In the theatre, I saw "Slumdog Millionare", which was good and exciting, but I wouldn't have given it best film this year. Milk was a better film.

I want to see Frozen River.

Anonymous said...

Last film I saw was Frost/Nixon which I saw five days before the Oscars to complete the Best Picture nominees.

As for DVD release, well I already know I'm going to buy Slumdog Millionaire and Milk so I can own these two great films forever.

But for movies I have NOT seen, I want to see Waltz with Bashir and The Class.

"Savage Grace"

I saw Confessions of a Shopaholic as a nice way of rounding off awards season.

Oscar-movie-on-DVD-wise, probably The Duchess, because I never managed to catch it in cinemas. I realise it's out on R1, but R2 is next month.

Last film seen: Double Indemnity for the third or fourth time. Reminds me not to try to devise the perfect crime. Though the one described here is sure entertaining.

I think the Oscar nominee I most want to see on DVD is Revanche, expected to come out on a Criterion disc which is sure to have sweet extras. There are others I still haven't gotten around to catching in theatres yet (mainly the Class and the Wrestler) so I need to hop to it before they evaporate from local screens.

Came back from Watchmen and I loved it. I will say that it will be a huge hit and miss with some audiences.

And I can't wait to see RGM on blu ray.

Last movie I saw was "Coraline" for the second time, but in 3D!
And like most people here I'm just dying to see "The Class" along with the other two Foreign Language Films I've yet to see.
I highly recommend "Revanche" for those who haven't seen it yet, it's spectacular and so un-Oscar.

Last movie I watched was Barry Jenkins' Medicine for Melancholy. It's a love story about two black hipsters in San Francisco. Jenkins was nominated for Spirit Award.

I've been trying to rent Frozen River from my local video store but it's never in. I guess it's officially on the hot list.

Last movie was Beautiful. An Australian thriller that was so very very bizarre. Odd time period shifts mid-scene, odd acting, odd subplots... There was something with Deborra-Lee Furness that could've been interesting if expanded, but it just wasn't. Hmmm.

I'm looking forward to seeing Frost/Nixon on DVD. Now that the Oscars are gone and it didn't win I think I'll wait for DVD. Not like I'm really going to miss all that much by not seeing it on the big screen, right?

jahs34 said...

I saw Kung Fu Panda yesterday, it was ok.

NATHANIEL R said...

Y Kant. I actually think September is pretty good despite its reputation. But Celebrity....uh, good luck with that one.

Kamikaze. No, you're not. And that's a sad thing to say. Shouldn't Oscar nominees be something yousimplymustsee on the big screen to fully appreciate?

Agustin. DO NOT download RGM. It's beautiful but the cinematography and the erratic camera, the whole aesthetic really, will look terrible on a download.

Dog Day Afternoon. Oh, how I miss the crazy, ballsy, disillusioned mainstream movies of the 70's...

Katey said...

Saw Brazil for the first time the other day, but if I'm being honest, the movie I saw most recently was Crossing Over, the immigration drama Sean Penn got cut out of.

And I can't wait to see Rachel Getting Married again.

Last new movie- CORALINE. The first great film of the year.

Last movie seen- BARFLY. A lot better than I remember. Mickey was extremely mannered but really did show tremendously potential.

I picked up a copy of a really small indie I had never heard of but loved at a video store that is going out of business. The film was called WTC View, anyone heard of it?

Milk comes out in 12 days enough said.

The last movie I saw was the Wrestler. This was last weekend in the run up to the Oscar ceremony.

The one nominee I'm most excited to see when it comes out on DVD is Departures. I want to see this Foreign Film winner.

Finally saw The Reader (good stuff of course), and I can't wait to see I've Loved You So Long.

FDot said...

I just saw Phoebe in Wonderland last night--enjoyable enough, not sure i'll remember it a few weeks from now.

I actually caught nearly all the nominated films this year, so I'd like to see the foreign film winner "Departures", though it doesn't sound like it will be on DVD until the end of the year.

I watched Lakeview Terrace Tuesday night and I can't wait for Milk to release on DVD!

Yesterday Netflix told me they received Things We Lost in the Fire (pretty damn good, not great), which means they're shipping Rachel Getting Married (at last! yay!).

Last night I watched Dead Heat on a Merry-go-round. Nothing in it is as good as the title, but it's entertaining.

I just watched A Knights Tale this morning for the first time in years, to find that I enjoyed it much more than I used to. Is it because of Heath's death, or has the movie just aged really, really well? Props to Brian Helgeland, who is as decently talented as a director as he is a writer.

I'm really looking foward to seeing Rachel Getting Married again on DVD, which I thought had the best ensemble cast last year, and The Wrestler and Milk just so I can watch them back to back and decide once and for all who had the better performance, Sean or Mickey.

I just (finally) saw Sleepwalking. It was good. I'm not sure why it took me so long to see it, but whatever.

I watched "The Secret Life of Bees" last night and I'm looking forward to watching "Revolutionary Road" when it comes out on DVD.

I finally saw Synecdoche, New York on Tuesday evening. Gosh some of the performances were wonderful.

I really look forward to seeing In Bruges on dvd. It should arrive from NetFlix today or tomorrow! I can't believe I missed it on the big screen. Most of the time Colin F. makes me all moony-eyed.

Just rewatched Benjamin Button last night in theaters. Played better for me the second time, though I still wanted some damn emotional highs and lows for Pitt. I'm not blaming him, but the character is written so flat that it's frustrating, but I ultimately enjoyed it more than my first viewing where I couldn't get past my hang-ups with the glaring faults I saw.

Last DVD rental was... Frozen River? That was a stunning film. So simple yet told so well.

J.D. said...

Oh, LMAO, I forgot the second part of the question.

Australia. On BLU-RAY. *drools all over keyboard*

Saw Revanche Tuesday at Lincoln Center. It's very good and deserved its oscar nomination.

"The Bigamist" - Ida Lupino, 1953

Most excited . . . N/A.

Last theatre going experience: Wendy and Lucy (still affecting me to this minute. i was shocked that it was over because it only felt like i had been there for 15 minutes. steadily moving up my top 10 list, also known as: 10 movies better than slumdog millionaire)

Last movie seen: The Lady From Shanghai (Rita Hayworth is gorgeous! Did Orsen Welles really have to be Irish?)

Oscar movie I want to see on DVD: I guess Rachel Getting Married but that's only because I haven't seen it a second time.

I saw "Two Lovers" last night -- very well-acted, esp. by Phoenix [insert overused joke here]. I'll be in Rome when "Milk" hits the shelves, and I'm so in love with it, I might just waste some vacation time looking for the nearest American DVD vendor.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona on DVD. I imported it.

Oh and Sense and Sesnibility, in preparation for Glorious Kate's corronation on Sunday.

Tonight its 'The Times of Harvey Milk'.

Just watched "The Devil's Backbone", some beautiful shots. Can't wait to rent Vicky, Cristina, Barcelone; for some beautiful shots of Javier! Michael in DC

in theater's the last movie i saw was coraline. i loved it. i thought the 3d helped it out a lot.

the last thing i saw on dvd was Brian De Palma's Sisters which i thought was very good. i like a lot of De Palma's stuff. Casualties of War is my next of his.

of the oscar movies the one i want to see the most is Frozen River it is on my netflix but it is a long wait. ive seen every other oscar movie.

Just saw "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" for the first time. Um... yeah. :)

Gotta echo the 'Milk on DVD' anticipation. I was giggling with cinephile joy yesterday at seeing one of those huge poster panels at a store in the mall. It was advertising the Oscars, and had Penn as Milk on it front and centre, like, his entire face taking up the panel, with the other nominated films mentioned at the bottom of the poster.

Doesn't surprise me, with the film's nomination success and upcoming DVD release, but still, it was a very pleasant "huh..." moment, it being in a mall, in some random suburb.

looking forward to Doubt coming out on DVD, missed it when it came to the theatres in hometown

Saw Mike Leigh's Naked. Wow, talk about the flip side of Happy-Go-Lucky. Interesting, but a little weirdly constructed I thought. David Thewlis was fantastic, though.

Am probably most looking forward to Revolutionary Road-although it might be on video.

got to watch Let the Right One In last night and thought it was amazing and really creepy. one of my absolute favs of the year and i only have a relatively small amount of films left to see. next movie to watch is Rachel Getting Married! which i can rent next tuesday since i work at a blockbuster and get them free a week before they come out. =) woot

Dimi i'm glad i'm not the only one in regards to WENDY & LUCY's staying power. I didn't think a lot about it at first but as the cursh of oscar movies came and went its quiet power was so much more effective than their noisy "love me" power.

chris said...

Last movie I saw in theaters was Revolutionary Road.

Movie I'm most excited to see when it's released on DVD is Milk, because seeing a movie like that a second time really allows you to appreciate its power.

Can't remember what I saw last, weird.

Am going to see Sunshine Cleaning on Friday, though. That I do know.

Will be seeing Rachel Getting Married when it's available on Netflix (very soon).

Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist...a teen comedy like I wish I had growing up. Plus, it reminded me a bit of GO, one of my favorite films.
