Post Oscars the the crowds are smaller but red carpets never stopped being walked on. So here we go with this week's sampling.
Maribel Verdú would like to know what it is with French actresses and The Film Experience. How about some attention for the Spanish ladies? Rupert Friend and Keira Knightley attended the opening of his film The Young Victoria (previous post). Rupert will be the love of Michelle Pfeiffer and Emily Blunt's lives this year onscreen. Offscreen he's still Keira's. They make such a beautiful couple but they're both so angular one wonders if they keep gauze and surgical tape on their nightstands just as a precaution. Cheekbones that kill.
Breaking news: Charlize Theron still hot, still knows it. Can we please have more Carla Gugino and Miranda Richardson onscreen? Come on agents, casting directors, producers etcetera. Use them (We discussed Miranda earlier). More on Carla next week since Watchmen opens today. She's playing Silk Spectre, the first. Speaking of... Malin Akerman is smirking at me. 'You can try to shove me off to the side Nathaniel but I'm coming for you. After Watchmen, I'll be everywhere. Like Megan Fox all over again.' I'm not quite ready to say uncle. We'll see how she does as Silk Spectre II. Was it just me or did Malik sort of blow that bitchtastic opportunity she had in 27 Dresses by playing it safe? That movie needed a dose of over the top villainy to give it some flavor.
We'll end with the stars of the sibling ex-con drama I've Loved You So Long, Elsa Zylberstein and the great Kristin Scott Thomas. They're pictured left at the Cesars (France's Oscars) last week. Elsa didn't ever get real traction for the supporting race here at the Oscars but in France she won the statue. Kristin was nominated for lead actress (as were two other actresses we adore Sylvie Testud and Tilda Swinton) but lost to Yolande Moreau in Séraphine which is about the french painter Séraphine de Senlis. That biopic swept the Cesars winning seven prizes. It isn't only the American Academy that loves the epic period bios. I'd say to expect this to be France's submission for next year's Oscars but for the fact that France always has an enviable supply of dozens and dozens of valid contenders.
My interview with Kristin is now up!

Keira and Rupert... <3
She looks gorgeous, and I will always be jealous of her beautiful, angular face. Gah, she's a goddess.
Okay, I love pretty much everything about Kristin Scott Thomas, and think she's still jaw-droppingly sexy, but what happened to her at the Cesars? She's usually so stylish too.
Is that just a really bad shot?
Agree about Miranda Richardson, she's a beautiful and talented lady who doesn't have the attention she deserve(I really hate that attitude towards mature actresses... I HATE IT!)
Charlize Theron looks nice.
Greets! :)
Is Yolande Moreau related to Jeanne Moreau?
Ahh... and I couldn't participate in the earlier discussion about Miranda Richardson, I wish I would...
I found funny your argumentation about Miranda's nod in the best supporting actress category in the Oscars 1992 for "Damage" (40% The Crying Game - 10% Beatrice Straight in "Network"). However, in my opinion Miranda's performance in "Damage" is great, in her limited onscreen time she's brave, provoking, strong and heartbreaking, her pain feels real and she made me cry (I don't cry too much watching movies).
Greets!
I keep meaning to post on Charlize in that dress over at MNPP but GOD I love it SO much when she goes all Dynasty. That woman... I love that woman.
at first i thought, 'oh, kiki, been playing with grandma's doilies again?'
but the fact that its malin akerman made me hate the dress even more.
she is beautiful, but so are a lot of actresses. and it seems like whenever she's in anything:THE COMEBACK, HEARTBREAK KID (yikes), now WATCHMEN, she's touted as the next big thing.
well, it ain't happened yet and i have a feeling that it never will.
but don't fret, malin, there is a place for bland, gorgeous girls who can't really act, it's called soap operas...or porn.
Ahh...Maribel Verdu. How is after the successes of "Y Tu Mama Tambien" and "Pan's Labyrinth" this lady doesn't have more work? I realize she appears consistently in Spanish films but it perplexes me that more North American filmmakers aren't utilizing her amazing gifts of expression. "Y Tu Mama Tambien" always struck me as being more about HER rather than the boys. Would love to see what she would do with a purely villainous role.
If you like Keira and boyfriend Rupert you MUST check out the pics from the latest Lula magazine. They apparantly shot a short film together, in spring last year.
Its a short story written by Rupert Friend about two suicide brothers who everyday try to kill themselves but are prevented each time by their frustrated fairy godmother played by Keira Knihgtley - I'm serious!
The costume designer from the Duchess, Micheal O'Conner is responsible for hilarious outfits. This explains his shoutout to Keira during his speech at the Oscars.
Check out keiraweb.com for the links on where to see the pics. Here's a teaser of what to expect: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=1359166&id=51504893458
Wayne, Maribel Verdu has an upcoming english language film this year, directed by Francis Ford Coppola... "Tetro".
My faves are Kristin Scott Thomas and Miranda Richardson
I've been teased so long... POST THE INTERVIEW!
6:04 Anon- thanks for the info, just did some reading on it. Carmen Maura *gasp* has a (hopefully) meaty role, so impressed by her in "Volver". A little worried about Coppola directing; hopefully this will be a Lumet-"Before the Devil Knows You're Dead" scenario.
Ooh... Elsa with long hair.
Can't wait for Séraphine and the KST interview!
yeah i suspect seraphine will make it's way here since it was such a hit there. And for those of you who don't recognize the name (i'll admit I didn't) Yolande Moreau... you are probably familiar with her face.
she is a character actress 50something woman who had memorable supporting roles in THE LAST MISTRESS and AMELIE... and she was the female mime in PARIS JE T'AIME if you remember that funny segment.
but the fact that its malin akerman made me hate the dress even more.

Thank you abstew and Nathaniel! There was discussion over at a message board about her with some posters believing like I did that she was a terrible actress, and some thinking that she was okay to fine.
One of the discussions was about her in 27 Dresses since that's what most of us had seen her in, and those that thought she wasn't that bad of an actress felt that her character was suppose to be annoying in that movie, so therefore she did her job. For me though, I knew her character wasn't suppose to be likeable, but when she made Ed Burns look like an Oscar winner compared to her, it didn't have to do with the character being the problem so much as the actress in the part being the problem. There was definitely something missing there, and even though we might cheer for the unlikeable character to get his/hers in the end, the actor portraying the unlikeable character can certainly have fun with the character along the way which Ackerman certainly did not do.
I hope she goes the way of Gretchen Mol. Sorry Nathaniel, I know you like Gretchen, and she certainly has more talent than I've seen from Malin Ackerman so far, but the constant shoving down the throat of how both were going to be the next big thing really annoys me. At least with Megan Fox, I can feel bad for her because she actually loves/d? Brian Austin Green, poor girl. Plus, she has had so much plastic surgery to look like Angelina Jolie, even though she was a beautiful girl before, that I feel bad for her especially as she gets older and will end up getting more surgery no doubt, and then end up with scary looks since they usually look really good at first until they get hooked on it, and then come out much worse in the end (Nicole, Meg, etc.). In fact, she's already looking a little rough in some pictures, so sadly it seems like she'll be replaced sooner than later.
