amir_uk said...: Ahhhhh! Have any other of this decade's films aged better? And they both won BAFTAs for this! They both won BAFTAs! Whenever I'm down I like to remember that in February 2004, Lost in Translation nabbed his and hers BAFTAs for its leads. Scarlett Johansson won Best Actress aged 19. How cool is that.; 6:24 PM

Wayne B. said...: I think the movie is great; I like watching a relationship begin and grow onscreen, especially one that's about platonic friendship. I like the idea that we can find a strong emotional connection to another person in the most random of places or circumstances. Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson (my favourite performance of hers) are both so strong at suggesting the emptiness they're both experiencing in their characters' personal lives. The last ten minutes is what pushes it into film classicdom.; 7:14 PM

Jason Adams said...: I was looking at stills from this entire scene before I posted this one and this one really moved me, which is why I chose it. The way they're looking at each other... really really touching.

Scarlett really is so great in this movie and especially this scene; when she tears up after he whispers in her ear... even looking at just a still, I teared up in return. I wish she'd get something this good again. I miss liking her.; 8:14 PM
Anonymous said...: I think the film is overrated too. Though I have yet to watch it again since 5 years ago. One of Scarlett's few good performances. I think that girl is seriously overrated. There's dozens of more interesting young actresses who have much more range.

she was campaigned as supporting, yes, to avoid confusion with her Girl with a Pearl Earring campaign.; 10:41 PM

amir_uk said...: People only tried to call this a supporting turn so that she wouldn't have votes split in Best Actress between this and Girl with a Pearl Earring. Which is exactly what happened in the end with Oscar. For the BAFTAs, she was nominated twice in Best Actress that year. Oscar doesn't allow that to happen. (Maybe time for that rule to be abanoned? After all if it;s possible in all the other categories, why not in the acting shortlists?)

To be honest, I'd much rather there have been category fraud and for Scarlett to have received her one (or even two) due Oscar noms that year.; 6:23 PM
