Cover Girl, Frontier Woman

Every third month or so I miss magazines.

Missing Julianne Moore happens far more frequently.

<--- Chloe promotional poster [via]

But never fear. A healthy dose of Julie Anne Smith face time coming our way in 2009 and 2010 (provided that the distribution gods are kind). Up first: a supporting role in The Private Lives of Pippa Lee. Then? Release dates are hiding but she's the lead in a horror thriller Shelter (uh oh. Julie + genre = trouble) and working the drama (ahhh, much better) with Colin Firth in A Single Man. Rather intriguingly (plot & auteurial wise) she's offering up Amanda Seyfried to her husband Liam Neeson in Atom Egoyan's Chloe. The teaser poster tag line makes it sound like "cheesy misogynistic thriller"... like Obsessed or something, but it's Atom Egoyan so it's safer to place your bets on "good psychologically compelling movie".

No obvious Oscar bait on the way except for the lead role of a frontier mother, Mary Margaret, who takes her kids on a treacherous journey from Missouri to Wyoming in Boone's Lick. It's from director Barry Levinson's and novelist/screenwriter Larry McMurtry (Brokeback Mountain). Entertainment Weekly calls the McMurtry book a "gory farce". Hmmm. Actresses don't often win Oscars for westerns but it's fun to imagine that she'll finally get hers as a sort of belated 50th birthday present in 2011. Still, with no other cast announced yet, who knows what will become of this project. Levinson has had two Best Picture shortlisters in his directorial career (Bugsy and Rain Man) but his last picture to cause any sort of fuss was Wag the Dog way back in 1997. So cross your fingers that they actually start filming this fall, as once planned... with or without the "rumored" Tom Hanks as co-star.

Wow. She gives good magazine cover. And then one mag over is, like, some blonde actress standing in front of a wind machine and then you realise why you don't buy them.

Wasn't last year supposed to mark the return of Julianne?

Looking at the dates on those covers, and the rather uninspiring list of upcoming projects, it seems that the cup has passed and it's time to admit - Julianne is no longer "hot", she is not as young as she was (and yes that matters in Hollywood) she seems more invested in her family than her career as of late...etc. I'm not putting her down, btw - terrific actress, and perhaps she'll have a full-on comeback in a couple of years a la Streep. It could happen.

that "western" sounds horrid. The description+title (Boone's Lick) makes me assume some take-off on the Donner Party tragedy? I haven't read the book but is such a thing necessary in life? (And given the reception of Tarentino's Inglorious Basterds, have we not learned that gore and more gore do not necessarily= a better movie?)

Come to think on it, why is there anything inherently funny about "gore" (ie the tearing apart of human flesh and blood?)

However, given those photos, I completely understand the need to bask in the glory days because goddess me, she does give good face. (Although her freckles are always airbrushed out of existence. Pity.)

BTW - I just tried to watch Atom Egoyan's "Calender" with my sweetie and we turned it off somewhere - I'm not sure really but we were both falling asleep. Somewhere after the fifth woman he's invited to his apartment asks to use the phone? We tried, we really did. So his name in this post, sadly, does not inspire confidence for me.

Janice... as you have probably surmised from my blog, I don't believe in admitting that anyone i love is "no longer 'hot'" ... my love is eternal (except when it's not)

mostly because I believe the concept of "who's hot" decimates good cinema and causes all sorts of weird things to happen. Megan Fox is hot right now but would I rather watch her act or Vanessa Redgrave act. Redgrave for the win ;)

Julianne is great and I admire her for taking up roles that are not into the above mentioned "hot" category. The only problem I have - and I have the same problem with all the actresses I love and don't see enough - is that because of these choices, the roles that come her way are scarce and bad and there will be one point when she will say - "you know what? I don't need this anymore". And then we won't see her again.

I love Julianne Moore, and so does my roommate...which made it all the more shocking when she said she ran into Julianne this spring somewhere in Midtown and reported to me that she looked really haggard and ugly in person. "Sacrilege! Lies!" I cried, but she insisted that she wasn't exaggerating or trying to be mean. I am inclined to believe her but it makes me sad.

Not that she's still not crazy talented or that this really has anything to do with anything. She's obviously still getting roles. I just hope she does not become one of Hollywood's tragic "You old, ho" casualties, because her talent deserves better...and a long-denied OSCAR, for fuck's sake.

The good part is Julianne is still getting Hollywood big lead roles at her age (Unfortunally in Hollywood age is a stigma). The bad thing it wasn't necessary a range of quality.

I still have a little faith in Chloe. The story, with a right direction and screenplay, could be a good film. And after all, the french film isn't too good, so bad comparations are out. We need to wait...

careful Bailey... you'll be old someday too. Respect!

adelutza... yeah, that's the risk with making several bad movies just to be making paper.

Ahh Julianne Moore, sometimes I like to just whisper her name and have mental flashbacks to "Far From Heaven." :)

And isn't she supposed to be playing Hilary coming up soon, opposite Dennis Quaid? A "Far from Heaven" rematch--I must be dreaming.

Glenn Dunks said...

Has anybody seen Nathalie though? The movie that Chloe is a remake of isn't exactly the most scintillating piece of cinema out there.

NATHANIEL R said...

Jordan... you aren't dreaming. It's for TV though and it's still in very early pre-production (i.e. things could fall through) and it's not till 2011 or so,.

Well, The Special Relationship starts shooting this July and the BBC has produced films which got a theatrical release.

By the way, I wonder what you all do for a living to be that judgmental. Have you all won the Nobel Prize ?

Gee, bloggers...

Yeah, she will be Hilary Clinton in "The Special Relationship", and, as the poster above me said, it could get a theatrical release (imdb doesn't list it as "TV movie" after all)... And they obviously will start shooting this year, as Julianne is apparently preparing for it: http://www.etonline.com/news/2009/05/74452/

Btw, wasn't she crucially overlooked last awards season for her comeback to drama performances "Blindness" and "Savage Grace"?
