We're back with round two. This time Katey and I are discussing Pixar's latest Up.
Would love to hear your thoughts on Pixar's latest film and protagonist Carl Fredrickson (we didn't get into this in the video but isn't it strange that Pixar films never have female leads?). I take it many of you already took that balloon ride.

Literally just got back from seeing this...despite the crying child a few rows away, probably my favorite Pixar film yet. It has more heart than I think I've ever seen, and I love how they sneak in the bleeding-heart environmental angle with Kevin. Beautiful animation and inspired vocal performances. And that short at the beginning! Gorgeous.
thought it was good, but not great...asKatey says the silent montage was phenomenal but the rest did not add up to any surprises for me
i reviewed it here : http://me-says-m.blogspot.com/2009/05/short-review-up.html
This was the first Pixar I actually payed money to see - I've seen also The Incredibles several times on DVD because Elastigirl is my niece's favorite character and Finding Nemo on a Greyhound trip some time ago .
To be honest, the best part for me was the 3D - I loved it. I don't think it will work for regular films but for animation is spot on. I can't say it was good or bad: it's a cartoon and as beautiful as it might be ( and it was) I still think that my childhood cartoons like The Flinstones were more imaginative and had better stories. Or I could give other examples.
In any case, I had a good time but really I don't see the hype at all. For me The Incredibles was way better , but I still have to see WALL-E.
I'm hearing great things about Up (which I guess should be expected from any Pixar film at this point...) so I might check it out in theaters. Its interesting since when I first saw the trailer I expected it to be on par with Cars. It was probably seeing the little kid and the dog...
But one of my friends said that it was one of the most emotional Pixar movies so far, so i'm hoping Up surprises me.
It always amazes me that people are never sure as to whether they should see a Pixar movie. What needs to be done to convince you?
Aaanyway, I'm loving these vodcasts. So fun. I can't quite put a finger on who Katey reminds me of though. I feel like it's Tina Fey meets someone else, but.... gah! can't think of it.
I'm loving these vodcasts! Any chance they'll be available on iTunes along with the audio podcast? :)
I liked it. Didn't love it. Um, it's getting a little routine to put out more plaudits for a Pixar film. Then again, with so much dreck released in theaters throughout the years, I guess I have to appreciate what Pixar offers every time out. The beginning of the film has a more touching romance in a ten-minute sequence than most 90-minute rom-coms the studios churn out EVERY YEAR. The movie then ventures into rather ridiculous territory with the talking dogs before settling back into a nice good vs. evil tale. The girl sitting next to me gave me the stink eye when I laughed at the Star Wars reference (you'll know it when you see it) with the dog pilots. Genius ploy...
"POINT!"
Makes me laugh every time now. Can I also say? I love Katey's shirt!
(Sorry Nathaniel, for putting this comment in the previous post. It was intended here)
@Alex - if we get enough of them maybe. i hope they get better... or rather i hope i get more coherent on camera ;)
I'm not sure how the itunes works with vodcasts. it was very complicated to set it up originally with the podcast and i still don't come up in searches even if you know the title (though it's definitely there) it's very odd.
Dory's kind of a female lead, right?
Keep these up! Love them!
P.S. When we getting another Best Pictures from the Outside . . ?
great guys!!! nat you look so muh like giovanni ribisi.
long may u reign.
I thought it was one of their best, for these reasons:

Warning: spoilers.
The "female lead" debate merely bores me. Is the movie any good? What does it say? Are the characters interesting? That's what I care about.
Erik, i like your review... but it seems strange to dismiss the notion that Pixar can't seem to include women in their movies as irrelevant or boring.
I'm actually beginning to think it's getting weird, their inability to do so.
But yes, I loved UP too.
I'll be happy as long as the movies stay this good but I do wonder about the future and have been thinking a lot about that Rocchi piece I linked to. One hopes they will take their indisputable gifts and challenge themselves with new directions, characters, plots and even genres.
but while we wait for that we're getting great movies so... yay!
RJ the holdup on "Best Pictures" is unfortunately all my fault. Nick and Mike are not to blame. will try to rectify soon and refind footing with that series
