The Brits don't rock the boat.

Robert here, with a quick take on the BAFTA Nominations announced this morning.  Here are the nominees with a few comments.

BEST FILM
AVATAR
AN EDUCATION
THE HURT LOCKER
PRECIOUS: BASED ON THE NOVEL PUSH BY SAPPHIRE L
UP IN THE AIR

Ahhh, the days of five nominees flashing back.  All expected to make the Oscar final 10 (and perhaps a little helpful push for the sophisticated An Education).

OUTSTANDING BRITISH FILM
AN EDUCATION
FISH TANK
IN THE LOOP
MOON
NOWHERE BOY

DIRECTOR
AVATAR James Cameron
DISTRICT 9 Neill Blomkamp
AN EDUCATION Lone Scherfig
THE HURT LOCKER Kathryn Bigelow
INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS Quentin Tarantino

Those who believe District 9 is peaking will have much to squawk about here.  It will still take much to break into what's the current expected five.  Still, thank you BAFTA for throwing in a few differences here and there.

ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
THE HANGOVER Jon Lucas, Scott Moore
THE HURT LOCKER Mark Boal
INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS Quentin Tarantino
A SERIOUS MAN Joel Coen, Ethan Coen
UP Bob Peterson, Pete Docter

ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
DISTRICT 9 Neill Blomkamp, Terri Tatchell
AN EDUCATION Nick Hornby
IN THE LOOP Jesse Armstrong, Simon Blackwell, Armando Iannucci, Tony Roche
PRECIOUS: BASED ON THE NOVEL PUSH BY SAPPHIRE Geoffrey Fletcher
UP IN THE AIR Jason Reitman, Sheldon Turner

FILM NOT IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE
BROKEN EMBRACES
COCO BEFORE CHANEL
LET THE RIGHT ONE IN
A PROPHET
THE WHITE RIBBON

ANIMATED FILM

UP Pete Docter

LEADING ACTOR
JEFF BRIDGES Crazy Heart
GEORGE CLOONEY Up in the Air
COLIN FIRTH A Single Man
JEREMY RENNER The Hurt Locker
ANDY SERKIS Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll

I must admit to being unfamiliar with Serkis in this role.  Still his presence is quite the surprise.  We could chalk it up to British quirkiness.

LEADING ACTRESS
CAREY MULLIGAN An Education
SAOIRSE RONAN The Lovely Bones
GABOUREY SIDIBE Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire
MERYL STREEP Julie & Julia
AUDREY TAUTOU Coco Before Chanel

Not that anyone doesn't love Meryl but will we finally have an award for Carey Mulligan?  We've been promising her awards all year... what a tease we've been.

SUPPORTING ACTOR
ALEC BALDWIN It’s Complicated
CHRISTIAN McKAY Me and Orson Welles
ALFRED MOLINA An Education
STANLEY TUCCI The Lovely Bones
CHRISTOPH WALTZ Inglourious Basterds

The inclusion of Baldwin is interesting (don't imagine he's inherently loved across the pond).  Should we be looking at this category as a sign that the Oscars aren't as set in stone as we think?  N

SUPPORTING ACTRESS
ANNE-MARIE DUFF Nowhere Boy
VERA FARMIGA Up in the Air
ANNA KENDRICK Up in the Air
MO’NIQUE Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire
KRISTIN SCOTT THOMAS Nowhere Boy

Definitely doesn't do much to clear up a slightly cloud Best Supporting Actress category.

UP Michael Giacchino

THE ORANGE RISING STAR AWARD (voted for by the public)
JESSE EISENBERG
NICHOLAS HOULT
CAREY MULLIGAN
TAHAR RAHIM

Taken on their own merit these nominations are fine if a bit uninspired.  There are some surprises yes, but most can be attributed to home-country love or release date differences.  I see nothing here that will shake up the Oscar race.  Do you?

What a horrible list of Best Supporting Actors. Discounting Christoph Waltz, who was a shoo-in anyway, and Christian McKay, Alfred Molina's performance in An Education was a slice of overcooked ham, Stanley Tucci was recognized for the wrong performance, and Alec Baldwin was unremarkable.

Do these awards voters just have tunnel vision when they watch The Hurt Locker? How could they keep nominating Jeremy Renner while ignoring Anthony Mackie?

I guess these nominations also mean the death of Bright Star, Where the Wild Things Are, and Sam Rockwell.

Hopefully the bafta nomination gives Ronan a credible shot for an Oscar nod, she is as deserving for consideration for the 5th spot as much as Mirren and Blunt are.

Good to see Baldwin nominated as comedic performances are so often over looked, could this possibly help him with Oscar voters?

In regard to the Andy Serkis nom, I've heard fantastic reviews of his performance. It very much fits the stereotypical Oscar idea. Great turn by an actor playing a musician, movie is so-so.

Honestly it seems like a fairly legit list to me. When do they actually announce the BAFTA awards?

So Invictus, and the Last Station MADE the BAFTA Longlist but were snubbed in the major categories. That's not good for them, especially for The Last Station cause Plummer was in the Top 5 on their longlist and was the only one who wasn't nominated.

I hope Ronan gets the 5th spot in Actress.

Was "Looking For Eric" that poorly received in the UK? Somehow I expected it to get at least some recognition at the BAFTAs...
It definitely had some flaws, but I still felt so utterly entertained by it, it's my favourite film of 2009.

BOO! Why has Bright Star been left out of the major awards?

If Ronan can get into the BRITISH list over Emily Blunt and Helen Mirren, that may count for something.

I'm also rather surprised that Precious made the list over Basterds, which you'd think would have more international appeal. But I guess Britain IS the one prominent WWII nation that isn't represented in any major way.

And I think I called best director to a tee when I entered a contest somewhere.

Oh yeah, and the lack of Bright Star love is très disappointing.

An Education is "sophisticated"? Robert Hamer is OTM about Alfred Molina; the movie takes its cue from his terrible work.

Yay for Let the Right One In! Best Swedish movie I've seen in aaaaaages. Let's hope the US remake won't keep our english-speaking friends from seeing the original :)

With regards to Serkis the film just came out a couple of weeks and everyone is raving about his performance, it is certainly not a surprise, and the person he likely pushed out (Morgan Freeman) is in a film that hasn't been fully released yet. I think the same can be said for Nowhere Boy's showing as that film is really fresh in people's minds here.

that Hangover nomination for screenplay is shocking.

So do you think Mulligan will win the BAFTA?

I was thinking that if Streep wins SAG, that momentum will carry her to the BAFTA/Oscar win. If Bullock wins SAG, Mulligan may win the BAFTA and either Bullock or Streep will win the Oscar. At this point, I'm going with the former scenario.

Call me stupid, but what qualifies Precious to also have the name of the book in the title? Is this the wave of the future? Should Fantastic Mr. Fox be called Fantastic Mr. Fox inspired by the book as written by Roald Dahl which goes by the same name?

Anyway, these look pretty standard. The same round-up.

I'm esp. excited for the Ian Drury biopic nomination if only because it means it might get a U.S. release, or at least show up on Netflix.

I'm so grossed out that The Hangover keeps getting nominations for things.

just. yuck. it's okay but jeezus. awards groups ignore comedies every year and THIS is the one they finally notice?

The Hangover was nominated over Bright Star, Moon and Nowhere Boy from the long list, I am surprised they went for a big American comedy instead of some great British films
