what's on your mind, movie-wise?
You've all been suspiciously quiet this week (seriously, you're freaking me out) so I figure your minds are on the other topics. But which? Topic away in the comments!

ok, I'll say it, and I'm not ashamed. I have been worrying that Summit is going to recast Kellan Lutz and Ashley Greene for the 4th (or 5th) Twilight movie. I mean really. Summit is making TONS of money. Through these people a bone, and make the fans happy. Recasting them will NOT be the same as recasting Rachelle Lefevre. So, GET IT TOGETHER SUMMMIT
I am going to see Just Wright tonight and hope that other people do too so that women of color (other than J-lo) can be seen as rom-com queens.
I've got musicals on my mind, big time. I would love to see a big-screen adaptation of "Ragtime" in all its opulent glory.
I also need to see Angela Bassett starring in a major motion-picture release again...and soon. Maybe playing against type in a dramedy as the slutty one in a trio of sisters (calling Loretta Devine and Viola Davis) dealing with aftermath of some tragedy. Or maybe as a mother who seeks redemption twenty years after abandoning her husband and children to find herself.
Just a couple of thoughts.
How to make a lot of money, legally or illegally
i'm going to see 'exit through the gift shop' tonight.
i'm a big fan of banksy's work, so i'm really looking forward to it.
also, rewatched two of my favorites this past couple of days. chinatown, and badlands.
chinatown just never gets old. i always think it's the best movie of it's genre. and badlands is such a beautiful experience, as with every malick movie. can't wait for the tree of life to come out.
amir -- i'm so worried about The Tree of Life now what with what's happening with APPARITION. It'd be so nice if Malick could finally catch a break release-wise.
It's the beginning of the Summer Movie Season and the Cannes Film Festival and both events seem to be fizzling at the moment.
I blame Robin Hood.
I've been a terrible moviegoer lately. I'll catch up over the summer, I suppose. Nothing is persuading me to spend the $10 (and the two hours).
I'm currently looking for a job.
Tomorrow I'm going to see the restored Metropolis at the Film Forum. Can't wait.
I'm thinking that I really want someone to make a movie with emphasis on witty and profound dialogue. Actually I wouldn't mind if 80% of movies were like that. 10% beautiful animated movies and 10% of everything else.
I also want another good noir movie a la The Last Seduction.
Iza -- good luck. I need to do that too.
Corey M -- i can't begin to understand anyone involved in that franchise and why they do the things they do. so that wouldn't surprise me
troyhopper -- yes yes and yes
michael -- i think i have now officially realized that money will never be a part of my life. so i'm trying to figure out how you forge an interesting life without it at all?
robert -- i second your scapegoat.
jake d -- i'm resistant to spending now too... but it's partially because i just don't have it to spend. but nothing seems exciting yet (that'll change in a couple of weeks)
alison -- i've seen that so many times that i wasn't going to go. but maybe i should.
Cate is 41 today, happy birthday. I love her so much, like Fergie says, like a kid loves their blanket. But do I love her enough to sit through Robin Hood this weekend? Crowe has become unwatchable and Scott has not made a good movie since Black Hawk Down.
I want to know what happened to the rest of the FB awards... :)
I'm worried that Inception won't live up to its EXTREMELY high expectations.
I'm also worried that if this movie fails, the first person that will be blamed is Ellen Page, because of the strange dislike of her by a lot of people. I guess we'll see in about two months...
I wish I was in Cannes and thinking about how to get there next year ...
Joel - I agree! What happened to them? I was so looking forward to the rest, especially the "extra" categories.....
This summer seems so lame compared to others in the past. The A-Team? The Prince of Persia? Robin Hood Begins? I'll pass, pass, and pass.
I still haven't see Iron-Man 2 yet and I do plan on supporting Just Wright even though the whole film was revealed in the trailer. It's rare that I like every actor in the principle cast of a romantic comedy.
Joel & Stella -- that has a lot to do with my life being really difficult for me the past couple of months. depression, job loss, site problems, etcetera. I do plan to finish it. Just trying to figure out a way and time.
I've been completely cut off movies :( I had my IB exams, which are like APs times three, so I had 10 exams in 9 days... I'm also been thinking about college a lot (Columbia Uni Class of 2014 :D)
Hopefully now I can get my life back...
I'm more addicted to TV series lately. I'm even considering getting up early or staying up late for the final episode of Lost which will air simultaneously to the US airing. I don't think I'll do it, I've been so disappointed before that I don't think it's worthy.
Mad Men has never let me down on the other hand. I can't remember a single bad episode. Why don't they make more series like this? or even why don't they make more movies like this? I need Mad Men all year long.
And my final random thought. Seeing Antonio Banderas news everywhere lately has reminded why I can barely stand him.
I've just finished to watch the last episode of Damages Season 3. And I hope it will be a fourth season...
And yesterday I watched Robin Hood. I thought I would be disappointed, but I could never imagined it could be so baaaad. Awful movie, with absolute no chemestry between Crowe (too old, too boring, always one-dimensional) and my beloved Cate (again in a Joan of Arc mood, like in the final part of the the horrible Elizabeth - The Golden Age). Both are terribly miscast.
Save your money. This movie sucks.
I finally saw Francis Ford Coppola's "Tetro" which led me to watching "The Tales of Hoffmann" which then led me to stop and realize how I love watching movies when they lead me to watch other movies.
Went to see Die Fremde (When We Leave) the other day and Sibel Kekilli really deserves all the awards she got (and is still getting) for this (I'm hoping the Tribeca one wasn't the last). As to the film, I thought it was brilliant... completely heartbreaking, but definitely worth seeing.
I also went to see two Scandinavian films this week (there's a Scandinavian film festival going on around here):
- Nord(North), which I thought was nice enough, but this sort of film has also been done quite a few times before, and better.
- <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1216501/>Prinsessa (Starring Maja)</a>, which has probably also been done before, but I still loved this. It was just so very very <i>cute</i> and the main actress, Zandra Andersson, was wonderful.
Sorry, I messed up the third link... Hope I get it right this time:
Prinsessa (Starring Maja)
Iggy - Can't agree with you on the Mad Men love anymore. I was with them, but so many ridiculous plot developments as well as the constant shoving of Betty Draper down my throat (a really unlikeable character) has just turned me off from the show.
I'm just hoping the joint pain all in my hand is not too serious arthritis. Oh and that Mary Mcdonnell and/or Amy Sedaris can nab an awesome role sometime soon.
I've been thinking a lot about DeNiro. Specifically: Although the film's are great, he's never given a "Best of the Year" performance in a Scorsese. It's the single note nature of performing in them. My personal preference for DeNiro would be three wins with a nomination count around 14-16. (Wins: Supporting Actor 1974, Lead Actor 1984 and Supporting Actor 1985. The other 11-13 nominations? Only clue: Runs from '73-'95.)
I tried to watch 8 1/2 a while back, and wow. I was bored out of my mind. Oh man. I guess that is one movie that i'm just not ready for. It's rare for me to not get fully through a movie or book, but i lasted about an hour and forty some minutes before i threw in the towel.
I finally watched Cat on a Hot Tine Roof in full (i've tried on numerous occasions and have always been interrupted by something or someone) and i loved it. So, so much. Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman
were one beautiful couple. But sadly, i watched it with someone who couldn't get past the acting. I know that in earlier films, acting is more hammy and sometimes stilted, but i didn't feel that at all with this film.
With more recent stuff, i feel that i'm rarely excited about upcoming movies these days. is it just me or is there not alot of must-see films coming out?
and when the hell is Rabbit Hole coming out?
I want to watch Inception...and Bright Star...
A couple of late 80s French thrillers seem to have caught my attention lately, like The Vanishing and Monsieur Hire. Interesting to compare the French approach to the thriller genre as opposed to Americans. The French delve much more into psychological development, character motivation and plot twists (almost Hitchcockian) whereas American films rely heavily on action sequences. French film makers seem to assume the audience has a fairly high intellegence level, which is refreshing.
Dimitra: Bright Star is an acquired taste, but I love the hell out of it.
I have one: the Marilyn vs. Marilyn biopics that the movie/gossip blogs are talking about. Everyone is rooting for Naomi Watts, but I like Michelle Williams more for the rol.
I went on a binge a month ago DVD-wise. I'm probably going to see one of them now. There's very little in theaters right now.
|'ve been catching up on oscar-nominated movies that recently - Capote, Rain Man, The Accidental Tourist, The Nun's Story, To Kill a Mockingbird (no, I've never seen it before) - but I've got stuck an hour into Iris. Judi Dench is brilliant, but the movie has no clue how to dramatise its own subject, and it's easily Jim Broadbent's worst performance. It's put me right off 'prestige' films for the time being.
Next up: Natalie Wood in Brainstorm, and Pierce Brosnan in 'Nomads'. B-Movie goodness, I hope.
Can't decide whether to watch Alien or Aliens tonight. Leaning towards the former.
@James T - That would be excellent! I will set out to make a script just like that and we'll see how it goes.
I've been thinking about school, english language and poetry...
Slightly off-topic (movie-wise), but not really. Last weekend I finally saw August: Osage County with Estelle Parsons on stage in Boston. I have to honestly say I was disappointed with the play. I thought it was uneven and over-wrought. Of course, Ms. Parsons was excellent in the lead role. I do see potential for a good film version (with the right actresses), and I can only hope the movie is better than the play. I have no idea how this won a Pulitzer and 5 Tony Awards!
Not movie-wise but tv-wise...
Have you listened to the Glee song for the next episodes? Because I have. I can't wait for next Tuesday... 'Dream On' from Aerosmith and 'I Dreamed A Dream' from Les Misérables are EPIC. The former more than the latter.
Now the two ones from the Lady Gaga episode... Meh. Not good.
Also TV-wise... I've been thinking about the Emmys lately. And the comedy categories in particular. Does anyone think Modern Family has a shot at winning? And do you think Poehler has a shot at a nomination for Best Actress? I'm loving to think about the comedy categories because this has been an odd year, with A LOT of comedies with awful seasons...
Movie-wise... Seen all the films that are on display. I'm waiting for next week's I AM LOVE premiere in Portugal. Tilda I LOVE you :)
TV-wise, dontcha think Betty White will win an Emmy for last week's SNL?
That Guest in a Comedy is a very iffy category but since last year Timberlake won for SNL... I believe that she may have the trophy reserved for her since she accepted doing it.
Amazing show + interesting performance + public sympathy + Emmy winner + Industry legend? DONE.
All this Cannes coverage is getting me excited for SIFF (seattle) starting up next week! I'm ushering to earn free passes, and here's some of the movies I'm going to see:
-I Am Love
-Winter's Bone
-Drifting (Spain)
-When We Leave (Germany)
-The Trotsky
-Leaving (France - starring Kristin Scott Thomas)
-Ondine
-Leaves of Grass
-Waiting for Superman
-I Killed My Mother (yay!)
and probably many others. Sadly, I won't be able to make it to either screening of 'Dear Lemon Lima', which was locally filmed & a few folks I know worked on it.
I see what you mean, Kyle, though I like how the writers have made Betty Draper evolve, I wouldn't like to have her as my mother :). But her prominence on the show this season makes sense. If you think about it, when she was just the pretty wife her presence on the show was fittingly almost ornamental, only when the character started to become something else, she's been given more screen time the highest peak being this season. I guess next season she'll go back to a more supporting role, considering how her storyline has gone this season.
Completely unrelated. I've waken up today thinking I'd pay to see an Ert 6 Bernie movie (!) animated or even with actors playing both characters and directed by the Farrelly brothers. Don't know who could play them, though.
It's Cannes everywhere, I literally have been reading the reports for hours. And now I really have to find a way to visit next year.
Also, Betty White should win for hosting SNL, she was hilarious (finally, somebody!), heart-warming and a real pro.
how about discussing the spectacularity of the marion cotillard/david lynch dior ad?

Robin Hood? C+
A reviewer said that Ridley Scott may have cut things out to make it more theatrically palpable (like Kingdom of Heaven, to which the Director's Cut is infinitely better), and I could see that on the screen. I mean, what is the central conflict in the film? And notice that Robin goes long periods of time without even using his trademark bow and arrow? Definitely could have been better.
After Inception, though, what else is out there for this summer?
I'm with Laika. I didn't like Broadbent's performance in Iris at all! I really don't get the acclaim. But yes, I thought Dench was great.
Jim Broadbent gave the best performance of his career. if you've ever been a care giver for someone you love with a chronic and/or terminal illness you may understand how perfect Broadbent gets it. easily one of the best performances of the past decade. transcendent, rich and nuanced. definitely deserved the Oscar he won.
